Gettin DSL....leaving cable behind...haha

3Mbit/640kbit(up) DSL owns all cable, anywhere. Cable might be fun with fast downloads (When I had my cable, I was lucky to get 120k/sec), but DSL pwns for packetloss percentage.

I'll go back to my classic example, over a year ago, I was on a server hosted by my ISP in a city 6 hours away, we have a direct OC line of some kind from my city to it, so pings of 35 were very possible. One night stands out in my mind on the server, which was the last straw for me, several friends of mine throughout the city were on this server, all on the same cable ISP, at about midnight.. just us on the server, I had a 350 ping and somthing like 70% PL, my four other friends there had 55 pings, and something like 10-15% PL. The next day I was called tech support, becuase the same thing was happening again, and all they had to say was, "There is nothing wrong with your connection sir" (we are just stupid, and over loaded your area node).

Later on I was calling them to cancel my @home account, and I said I was switching to a local DSL provider, and the @home person said, "You know your uploads will be capped at about 12k/sec". I burst out laughing when I had to say, "Fuckin sweet, that twice the upload I'm getting now". And it was true, I was only getting 5k/sec (40kbit) on cable that should have been 96k/sec (768kbit)..

I now average 155k/sec downloads, up to 180k/sec, and 12k/sec uploads very constant. And I get about 0-1% packet loss while gaming. GG Cable. GG.

DOCSIS cable is *NOT* capped at 1.5Mb.. but rather 10Mb.. which is the maximum download capability of 10BaseT Ethernet... i know ... i work for a Cable ISP.
BTW.. i download at about 3.5Mb.. so don't tell me all cable is capped. It depends on your ISP.

<< GG Cable. GG. >>

Does GG stand for Great and Grand? If so, THATS MY WORD DAMNIT!!! Only my friends and I are allowed to use GG!

It really depends on where you are.
There are so many factors, to make a statement like "dsl blows or cable sucks" is really ignorant.
Only if you knew the half of it.
DSL is run over POTS, which, is well, getting old and used and reused and shared, and reloaded and gained. A whole mess load of stuff. But you can have your own individual circuit on the POTS.
Cable has lots of users, almost everyone has cable TV, which is a strain on their lines, which are copper as well. Your also using these lines that were designed for *oneway* transfer. Isnt the best thing. Cable is shared as we all know, as it would be in a LAN. Also, digital cable boxes, if available in your area, require an IP, that IP pool has complete prescendence over all. Thoes packets are routed first, literally.
So they are different services, different mediums.
Yea I love my cable here, i only use it after 12am after work. My loop is too long for any kind of worthy DSL service. My next closest CO is schedualed to be wired soon.
Now take a service like Sprint ION for example.
Or a SDSL service. ION will SMMMMMMMMMMMMMOKE cable. 8megs down. 1.5 up. Wireless router included, long distance, etc etc.
SDSL is great too. There is guaranteed uptime, unlike most cable or adsl services.

Now how about this. A T1 is 1.5Mbps, up and down. Cable can smoke a T1 theoretically and in a lab.
So why not run everything off cable? 😉
Your T1 goes down, you call the isp, with in 2 hours a tech needs to be there, within 24 it needs to be up or diagnosed with a solution. Or fcc drops a bomb 😉
