Funny how that town in Georgia passed a law that required citizens to own a firearm and in the 25 years since that law went into effect, no one in this town has been involved in a fatal shooting...

Firearm Ownership is Mandatory for All Households in Kennesaw, Georgia

25 Years Later, "Gun Town USA" Continues to Maintains Exceptionally Low Crime Stats
By C.T.

Do you know that if you live in the small town of Kennesaw, Georgia, you are required to have and maintain a firearm?

On May 1, 1982, a new ordinance was passed by the city council of Kennesaw. This law ( Sec. 34-1 Heads of households to maintain firearms) made it mandatory for each household to own and maintain a gun, as well as ammunition. Not only was the ordinance passed by city council, it was a unanimous decision. The ordinance states the gun law is needed "In order to provide for the emergency management of the City, and further in order to provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants, every head of household residing in the City limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition therefore." Of course, exclusions were made to convicted felons, people with religious objections, and people with disabilities.
Members of the city council introduced and voted for the ordinance to make a statement when a city in Illinois, Morton Grove, passed an ordinance banning hand guns from anyone other than peace officers. Morton Grove was the first community to ever ban the sale and possession of handguns.

Both city ordinances drew worldwide media attention, with Kennesaw's attention being negative. Nicknamed "Gun Town USA" from a column titled the same and written by Art Buchwald, expectations were for the town to covert back to the Old West style of handling disagreements with ruthless shoot outs. This expectation never happened. In fact, more than 25 years after the ban, not a single resident of Kennesaw has been involved in a fatal shooting - as a victim, attacker or defender. There has been one firearm related murder but not from a resident of Kennesaw. Since the ordinance, no child has ever been injured with a firearm in Kennesaw. Crime dropped after the ordinance and the city has maintained an exceptionally low crime rate ever since, even with the population swelling from 5,000 in 1982 to approximately 30,000 today. The truth is crime has plummeted and population has soared.

In comparison, the population of Morton Grove, Illinois has dropped slightly and the crime rate has increased, especially right after the ban.

Putting a ban on owning a firearm may keep guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens but will it put them at a disadvantage when it comes to protecting their families and possessions? Criminals who do not abide by laws anyway, will still possess handguns. If you were a criminal planning on breaking into a home to steal or cause somebody harm, would you choose a home in a city where every homeowner is required to carry a gun and ammunition or a home in a city where homeowners are banned from carrying guns?

Millions upon millions of people do. 3-4% of the eligible population on average. Myself included.

I'm as pro-gun as they come, but that story doesn't really prove anything. I wish the pro-gun crowd would stop posting it as if it had any merit.

Wow, you really have no clue.

If some crazy person is on a rampage like the guy in Alabama and wants to kill me I want to be prepared to make sure that doesn't happen.

Yea, right. It's always about 'preparation'. When you get shot in the back, I'm sure you'll be prepared.

You seem to be cluelessly unaware that there have indeed been incidents were a law-abiding citizen carrying a sidearm and carry permit has stepped in to alleviate the situation. I remember one situation in particular down in east Texas where some dude opened up outside a courthouses and killed a few people. A citizen who was carrying was able to stop further rampage for this murder, however he died in the process of saving the lives of others.

So, yes it is about preparation jackass.

Blow me tough guy. You pointed out one situation (with no links), and that situation ended with the death of the 'hero'.

Read the number of shooting recently in this article:

and then read about how this shooter toyed with a few cops before being taken down:

I love how you all talk so tough, when NONE of you have EVER been in a situation like this. Going up against someone with nothing to lose, prepared to not only kill you, but everyone else around you and ultimately themselves. Armed with automatic weapons, and you think your little handgun is going to stop them? With your few minutes of shooting at paper targets at the local range? Ohhhh, I feel safe now! The cops have a hard time taking these guys down, yet you think you're man enough to do it?

Honestly, I'm way more worried about the endless number of folks who pack heat 'to be prepared' than those who carry out shooting sprees. Everyone thinks they're Rambo.

Where do you get that these people use automatic weapons. You do realize automatic weapons are already HIGHLY regulated and are very expensive. If you can show me one use of a legally obtained automatic weapon in a crime I'll eat my keyboard.
The bank robbers in the famous LA shoot out used illegally converted WASR-10's.

I think it's more that you are afraid of yourself and you maturity with dealing with guns that you are with people that legally own them and have obtained conceal carry permits.
I'll admit that there have been a handful of conceal carry persons that have commited violent acts with a weapon, but statistically it is less than one half of one percent of licensed carriers. You're chance of being murdered by a legally owned firearm is less than that of being struck by lightning.

I'm more worried about the thugs and wanna be thugs that carry guns in their sagging pants without holsters. I work in a nice part of Dallas and MS13 tags are showing up here now. I wont be a victim of gang violence without putting up a fight.

As somebody already posted you are so beyond fail I am not sure you are worth saving. i clearly stated law-abiding people with permits.

Do those links demonstrate that? You linked "evidence" that is so irrelevant it is laughable. You seriously used higher brain power to come up with those?

Criminals are going to commit crimes regardless of what the laws are. Law-abiding people, by the very definition, do not commit crimes. Big difference, buddy.

If you want to read about where carry permits worked out, then BE AN INFORMED PERSON and look the stuff up yourself. I am not here to teach you. Well, maybe I should because you demonstrate a lack of education.

This gets down to the difference between correlation and causation. That story does nothing to show that the requirement that each household own a gun actually caused the zero fatal shooting rate. There are probably numerous other towns of similar size that have no such law and also have zero incidents, or that ban guns and have the same results. What would you say about those towns? :p

There is one town I know of in particular in Illinois (Morton Grove I think?) that banned firearms, and has seen a crime increase... but again, no proof of correlation/causation.

To be fair, I live on the other site of the 285 loop in Georgia and gun ownership is pretty common down here anyways. I doubt that many more went out and purchased a firearm after that went into law and probably most moving there do not buy one for just that purpose.

Well, on a larger scale, I believe there have been studies that show that in general, more guns leads to less crime. A lot of work was done by John Lott on this subject, but his methodology has been called into question. One thing that is pretty certain, though, is that more guns does not lead to any real increase in crime.

Of course, I think statistics are a weak basis for almost any arguments. You can always find numbers to support a position, and in many cases, they same numbers can lead to two different conclusions. There are many more better arguments that can be made using little more than logic.

I own firearms, I have a CCW, I am proficient at shooting, and I carry every day. If I could carry a cop on my back, I wouldn't have to carry a gun.

When seconds count, the police are just minutes away.

What's weird about it? It's just a part of the morning routine, plus a habit of responsibility, like testing smoke alarms, checking extinguisher pressure, etc. It's pretty much how you describe it.

Every day I:
Wake up.
Get dressed.
Take my sidearm from my headboard compartment and put it on my belt as I put my belt on.
Draw the firearm and verify the chamber indicator is red.
Verify the safety is on.
Holster my weapon.
Continue getting ready.
...
(then at the end of the day:)
Take my sidearm off my belt as I take the belt off.
Place it in the headboard compartment.
Get undressed.
Go to bed.

It's just a step like any other.

Of the stories I've been reading every single one of them are stressing "He had an assault rifle!! and was spraying bullets!". In yet another effort to confuse people to think an assault weapon is an automatic fire weapon.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if this is used to push the ban through do to emotional reactions from a scary black rifle they see in the movies.

Confirmed - a Bushmaster and SKS were used. :(

Just watch as the media misinformation is pounded into the public emotional outburst and call to action/bannage.

i think its weird because you're carrying a gun to defend yourself by killing someone. prolly a very bad dude.
whereas, whenever i have a gun, im out for fun. i have no intent of "ready to kill"

if you get shot in the back, it will be because you either werent paying enough attention to your surroundings (something everyone should do), or someone a good distance away with a rifle sniping you. gun ownership isnt for everyone, obviously not for you, but dont discount the validity for those who are willing to take the responsibility for it.
