My parents however....
Really really long story short my parents legally bought a nicely wooded property next to their house for well below market value because the original owners had died in the 1930s before they could develop the land. No one cared enough to do anything until my parents couldn't get a permit for an addition because of house:lot size ratio rules. They had to go through a process of trying to contact descendants, hiring real estate lawyers, filing motions, township meetings, paying taxes and fees etc. but were given title to the land
They had a verbal agreement with the two other bordering lots that they would sell them the small strip of land both neighbors had been using on the abandoned lot for the appropriate % of what my parents paid for the land
When the neighbors found out how little my parents paid - instead of being happy that they would pay so little for the agreed on land they got pissed at my parents. (I guess they are mad\jealous that they could have picked up that land for cheap but never bothered to?) Demanded and sued for 66% of the acquired lot which failed. So they confronted and yelled at my parents - which still did not get them 66% of the land.
Now they want to go back to the original agreement but the price has (for some strange reason) increased to fair market value + all the legal fees incurred by their stupidity. So they are threatening more legal action. So my dad has informed them that any more time and effort they force him to expend will also be added to the price of the land in addition to any newly incurred legal fees.
Not sure why they aren't getting that he is under no obligation to sell them the land or sell them the land at a price they want
