Get a PS3? Wait for Wii?

Locut0s

Lifer
There is a possibility that I could get a PS3 this Christmas if I split the cost with my father. He has asked me if it's something I'd like to get for Christmas or not. I told him I am not really very interested in the system as it stands right now, I don't like any of the launch titles and don't see much in the near future that I like either. What I would like instead is a Wii but they are very hard to get a hold of apparently the PS3 is a little easier to get at the moment. If I don't get the PS3 odds are I'll have to wait some time before getting a Wii, that is no Christmas present for a while. I can think of a few advantages to getting a PS3, one is that we have a 50" grand wega set to connect it to, which could make good use of the Blu-Ray drive. The other is the fact that while there isn't anything I like out now there's bound to be something I like latter. I prefer RPGs, strategy, and platformers to sports, racing, for FPSs all of which tend to fall into the PSX camp but there are sure to be some great RPGs and other games coming out latter for the PS3.

What would you recomend doing?

update

Well I will be getting a PS3 in the end!! I am going to split the cost 1/2, 1/2 with my father. I don't actually think this is a mistake. I won't be getting any f the launch titles but instead will get Final Fantasy XII (a PS2) title. I have never owned a PS1 or 2 and while I wait for some good PS3 titles to launch I have a very large library of PS1 and 2 titles to play. Yes I know of the stories that the PS3 has some problems with older titles but it should play the vast majority to titles fine. Also as I mentioned previously blue-ray titles should look good on our large screen TV. I will probably get Wii at some point in the future also.

update: I have the PS3! 60GB.

If you buy it for playing with a group of friends, Wii is your choice.
I put my Wii in the teaching assistant office and we just play wii sports non-stop.

Unless Christmas is very important for you, I wouldn't rush a decision to get something right away. I'd rather wait a little and get exactly what I want.

You want to get a $600 system to hold you over until you can get the $250 system... yeah that makes sense.

and how is a PS3 easier to get than a Wii right now?

PS3s are selling for around retail prices on eBay, Wiis are still selling for double retail price.

Nintendo has been shipping a ton of them, but they sell out before they're on the shelves 😉

The local Wal-Mart here said they'd be getting 5 Wiis in today. I'm going to go try to get one. *crosses fingers*

if you get a ps3... you can create a hong kong account and download the new free gran turismo demo that will be released on dec. 24... i can't wait for that!!!

Why do you assume he's getting a Wii just for Zelda? 😕

why bother... even Time magazine now says PS3 is a total bust.

TIME magazine deems PS3 a bust

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1570831,00.htmlTIME magazine rounds up the five "phenomena" on the year that captivated the media momentarily before ultimately going bust on the hype. The PS3 shares the not-so spotlight next to Bode Miller, Studio 60, Fox TV's canceled If I Did It program, and Snakes on a Plane as the year's biggest letdowns according to the magazine.

From the article's sub-section entitled HOW TO BLOW A HUGE LEAD in video games: "The PS3 is hideously expensive--it goes for up to $600--and Sony manufactured only a piddling few hundred thousand for the U.S., fewer for Japan. Plus it's hard to write games for; the launch titles were lame. You know you're in trouble when you get beat by something called a Wii." Sony would have to try really hard to get anymore negative press for the PS3, not to mention other facets of the company's endeavors. Can an electronics brotha get a break? Maybe a slight one if we didn't run this story...

PS3 = garbage

My cousin was saying that one of the guys at work stopped by about 8 Gamestop/EB stores looking for another Wiimote+nunchuck, and couldn't find them. But every store had PS3s in stock. And that there was 22,000 PS3s on ebay.

...ouch

considering most people CANNOT aford to pay $600 for a ps3 (a video game system for jesus f'ing chris). Also considering, even though this is the height of the buying season and most ps3 are selling for retail... would it be possible for the ps3 that people have bought for "a profit".. well, how long will it take for these ps3 to be sold @ a lost? Like I said most people don't really want a ps3.. they were just hoping for a profit... if they cannot sell these at a "reasonable price".. how low do you think they will sell them to "cut their loses" after christmas?

yup.. price... bad reviews...big negative exposures.. and poor game selections = dud..
hello Dreamcast 2

I predict gigantic numbers of PS3 will be returned to stores soon by Ebayers, or at least they will try to. Hopefully the stores will block them and the ridiculous practice of Ebayers buying up every hot product that comes out, virtually risk free because they can return it if they don't sell it, will slow down.

yah pretty sick of this trend myself..
went to try to reserve a WoW BC collectors edition to match my wow collectors edition only to find out the Ebay sellers bought all the reserves and now they all on ebay for 250+ bucks...

rediculous..

I hate ebay.. and what its done.

i have a Wii and an Xbox360, and I had 4 ps3's at one point, but only have 1 ps3 left that I'm returning back to circuit city heh.

I won't get a PS3 until its like $300, the system is not even remotely close to being worth $600.

I dunno ... I sold 3 ps3's all atleast $100 over retail (in the past 2 days) so I wouldn't say people can't afford them.

So you couldn't get anymore? This is christmas after all 🙂 Also, if you sold it on ebay $100 over retail isn't that great considering most people selling have to pay taxes, ebay fees, paypal fees, etc... the situation with the ps3 is going to be interesting after christmas...

i know, i am actually laughing at how crappy the resale market is. i mean there isn't much more I can do than just laugh it off heh.

I actually made like an average of $150 profit on each after fees and stuff, so it's not TOO bad.

Well yah thats pretty bad actually considering what I though ti twould have been hah.
