I’m sorry to see him go. He was a decent man and arguably the best republican president in decades.

I met him and Barb one time about 10 years ago and had a chance to shake his hand. They were very pleasant in the brief interaction we had.

RIP

While living we like to differentiate ourselves from others in various ways, some good and others not so, and thus we will all have our differences. In death, we are all equal. RIP, Mr. President, and thank you for your life of service.

That said, I am dying to see how Combover Caligula makes this all about him.

RIP.

By my estimate, the youngest American WWII veterans alive today would be about 88 or 89.

He was one of the only Bush's I liked. He didn't put party before country and he was able to adjust his policies when the facts didn't support his existing policies. He also had no problem calling bs even when it was against his own party.

Was he perfect? No but he tried to be.

Former President Obama issue a statement:

America has lost a patriot and humble servant in George Herbert Walker Bush. While our hearts are heavy today, they are also filled with gratitude. Not merely for the years he spent as our forty-first President, but for the more than 70 years he spent in devoted service to the country he loved – from a decorated Naval aviator who nearly gave his life in World War II, to Commander-in-Chief of our Armed Forces, with plenty of posts along the way. Ambassador to the United Nations. Director of Central Intelligence. U.S. Envoy to China. Vice President of the United States.

George H.W. Bush’s life is a testament to the notion that public service is a noble, joyous calling. And he did tremendous good along the journey. Expanding America’s promise to new immigrants and people with disabilities. Reducing the scourge of nuclear weapons and building a broad international coalition to expel a dictator from Kuwait. And when democratic revolutions bloomed across Eastern Europe, it was his steady, diplomatic hand that made possible an achievement once thought anything but – ending the Cold War without firing a shot.

It’s a legacy of service that may never be matched, even though he’d want all of us to try.

After seventy-three years of marriage, George and Barbara Bush are together again now, two points of light that never dimmed, two points of light that ignited countless others with their example – the example of a man who, even after commanding the world’s mightiest military, once said “I got more of a kick out of being one of the founders of the YMCA in Midland, Texas back in 1952 than almost anything I’ve done.”

What a testament to the qualities that make this country great. Service to others. Commitment to leaving behind something better. Sacrifice in the name of lifting this country closer to its founding ideals. Our thoughts are with the entire Bush family tonight – and all who were inspired by George and Barbara’s example.

Nothing but total class, as I would expect. Damn I miss that man and his family. I wonder what turd Donny Dollhands is going to drop on this occasion. I expect him to initially say something kind but he will have to follow it up with something nasty. He can't help himself, he doesn't know self-control.

If it sounds too sympathetic and kind then you know damned well he didn't write it...lol!

The last somewhat sane Republican. He tried doing the responsible thing with respect to the economy and Republicans fucking punished him for it.

You’re right.

It happens a lot to married couples after the first spouse passes. I was actually surprised he survived this long.

I notice that too.
I think it depends on their kids and how close they are to the parents.
Having grief support from family makes all the difference.

I didn’t like GW as President. He wasn’t the right guy for that time. He was great like Carter as a former President. Earned my respect.
I’ll never forget a pbs interview where he explained why he ended the gulf war without Sadams leaving power.
During a briefing he watched an Apache(?) gunship hunt down a single man. Bush said something about how can you win a war when a multi million dollar machine is being used to hunt one man.
PBS played an a video to accompany Bush’s words and it was disturbing low light intensified outline of guy kind of shooting up, then hiding behind a wall, the helicopter moving to the other side, him running behind a car an so on until he was killed. I’m not sure if that was the video Bush was speaking about but I understood his point.
Bush was a good man

George Bush was the last great Republican President and the last American President who truly understood how to project American military power in the post Cold War era.

I was in junior high during the Gulf War. I vividly remember the entire Gulf War, and the principles that Bush asserted. That America could be a force of good against tyrants. That America should lead but with the support of the international community. That civilian leaders set clear objectives and exit criteria for war, but then trust the generals to lead. The nightly Schwarzkopf briefings restored the faith Americans lost in the military during Vietnam, something Bush deserves more credit for. I remember witnessing the Gulf War parade in NY with my grandfather, and the pride it inspired for him and other vets.

Bush is the President who inspired me to serve. He wasn’t a perfect man, and perhaps a bit tone deaf to domestic concernss, but he was a good man and patriot.
