Which European country?s territory is furthest west?

apparently, this is trick question...in our company ebulletin thingey...first correct answer gets a prize and google has failed me...

that is exactly how the question was worded. it is probably some territory in the Pacific that is still 'owned' by a European country

If you count territories then the Falkland Islands. If you only count the actual countries I would say Iceland or Portugal (I don't know if Iceland is an independent state or not).

Countries with territories in the western hemisphere (North America / South America):

UK: Bermuda, Falkland Islands, Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, other various Caribbean islands, Pitcairn Island
France: St Pierre and Miquelon, French Guiana, other various Caribbean islands
Netherlands: Aruba, Antilles

Of those, Pitcairn is the furthest west, so UK.
