Gentlemen: This is why your car insurance is so high

Neighbor is a cop. He hits my parked car the other day as he's leaving for work. Suggests that I tell the insurance it was a hit and run (while I was asleep or something) and offers to pay for the damage. "Dude, you get the insurance money AND I fix your car for free!"

WWATOTD? Do the right thing and report accident? Or do the wrong thing and get cash + not piss off an officer of the law?

Disclaimer: This is all made up. First amendment right FTW.

That's how it started, but then I had the repair estimate done, and it was more than he wanted to pay... so now it's more like "I'll pay for half of the repairs, and the insurance will pay for the other half, and you get to keep the rest."

Are you serious? Why would you have insurance pay for part, and use cash for the rest? The damage is already done if you file a claim. You might as well have insurance pay for all of it.

Its a question of morality. Is not pissing off your neighbor worth more to you than knowing that you filed a false police report and committed insurance fraud?

Your neighbor is putting you in a bad situation for sure. But the more you play with the idea, the worse its going to be. Time is a bad thing in these situations.

I don't think insurance fraud is something you wanna fuck with. I've had a few hit/skip clients and even with minimal property damage, insurance companies still put in a lot of investigative time.

You may have to move (and maybe change your name) but I would tell the insurance company what actually happened.

Sucks, though, because this guy is actually really nice and a great neighbor. Maybe I'll just pay the other half and not even report it. :/

The only way through this that doesn't end with A) you committing insurance fraud or B) having a pissed off neighbor for a cop that I can see is to tell the cop to keep his money and report that your car was hit while parked to your insurance company and let them pay for the damages.

Did you tell the body shop that you would be paying out of pocket?

Out of pocket prices are a lot less than insurance prices.

Option C:

File it on insurance and stick your neighbors offer in your pocket for when you need him to fix a ticket or two for you.

Was the police officer named savoyboy? If so, disregard any and all advise he may have given you. Ask him how his brother's rape case is going?
