I bet insurance fraud is even more rampant in the medical insurance industry. We're all paying for the costs of illegal white collar crime.

Get the officer's supervisor's name and ask him if what the neighbor cop is proposing is legal.

For all you know this could be a setup and I gotta tell ya, you don't want to live with shit hanging over your head the rest of your life.

Sucks, though, because this guy is actually really nice and a great neighbor. Maybe I'll just pay the other half and not even report it. :/

are you kidding

The only way through this that doesn't end with A) you committing insurance fraud or B) having a pissed off neighbor for a cop that I can see is to tell the cop to keep his money and report that your car was hit while parked to your insurance company and let them pay for the damages.

what part of insurance fraud don't you understand? any hit/skip is investigated and they will ask if he knows or saw anything.

Wait, why doesn't he just pay for the damages and you don't file an insurance report?

That's how it started, but then I had the repair estimate done, and it was more than he wanted to pay... so now it's more like "I'll pay for half of the repairs, and the insurance will pay for the other half, and you get to keep the rest."

Technically I think that's considered insurance fraud...

Either get all the money from him to fix it, in advance, or go to the insurance company. Btw how much is it, and how much is your deductable? Can you even prove it at this point that he did it (if he denies it)?

This guy is a real piece of work.

Option C: Tell the guy that you like his plan and will go for it. Then take his money and pay for the damage. Don't file a claim so you don't break the law. Your cop friend is happy, you have a fixed car, and you are still all nice and legal. Also, if he's trying to bait you, then you're covered as you never filed a claim.

Hey, go look outside -- the sky is blue! Ya learn somethin' every day!

I just talked to him and told him I wasn't really comfortable with what he suggested, and he was surprisingly totally cool about it, and just offered to pay the whole thing!

Cool. Did he say when he was going to pay? Hopefully its before you take the car in so you don't have to take any risk in being paid when you pay the body shop.

Neighbor is a cop. He hits my parked car the other day as he's leaving for work. Suggests that I tell the insurance it was a hit and run (while I was asleep or something) and offers to pay for the damage. "Dude, you get the insurance money AND I fix your car for free!"

WWATOTD? Do the right thing and report accident? Or do the wrong thing and get cash + not piss off an officer of the law?

You sure it wasn't his wife?

If he was nice and a great neighbor he wouldn't be putting you through this.

tell him he can prepay for the repairs today (or tomorrow as it may be getting late) or if that's unacceptable you'll just have to call your insuance agency.

Paying for damage one does is not illegal. I hope you know what insurance fraud is..

Oh does his car have damage? If so it's no longer your word aginst his that he hit your car.
