Is that like Mongolian BBQ? Go there, get a bowl, load it up with meat and veggies, add special sauce, then have a guy grill it up in front of you? Here it's $10 a bowl, or $15 for AYCE.

Yes. You first fill out a slip for two starches (rice / noodles / etc). They give you two bowls:

1) one for meat veggies

2) the other for sauce of your choice

Then they throw everything on a big grill in front of you and cook it all up. Its tossed back in a bowl and served with chopsticks.

:)

Ah yea, if you go there always get all you can eat. Paying that much for 1 bowl is insane. I always load up on the expensive stuff, screw putting loads of cheap veggies in.

Mongolian BBQ isn't anything closely related to Mongolians. It was actually made by Taiwanese people in the 70s.

I don't see any evidence of bbq, grilling, or any resemblance of Mongolian food. All I see is a bowl of stir fried meat and veggies.

I actually like Ghenghis, but...

I don't understand people who think it's the greatest thing ever. YOU are doing all the work. People repeatedly tell me, "But they cook it for you!" Listen idiots, throwing a pile of stuff on a grill and stirring it occasionally is probably the easiest part of the entire cooking process. Knowing what to put together so that it tastes GOOD is the hard part. That's why I go to restaurants, because they paid somebody to figure out what tastes good and what doesn't. Would you go to a restaurant that told you, "Our chef just throws a bunch of stuff together and it may or may not taste good. That'll be $15." Of course not, this is why people go to schools to learn how to cook.

You want the ultimate Mongolian barbeque? It's called your grocery store, they have everything Ghenghis has and more! And cheaper! And guess what, YOU still have to do the hard work of figuring out how to cook it so it tastes good! So Ghenghis chopped up the veggies before you got there, big deal.

I ate at a GG at least once a week for the first nine months of the year. I love the place. I got my wife tired of it, but my daughter still loves it.

Pack the bowl full of meat, mash it with your hands.
Put the seasoning on.
Add veggies. If you want more veggies, add pico de gallo and mash it on the top, it will firm it up so you can add more veggies.
4 little cups of sauces
White rice, fried rice or noodles

Yummy.

It's good but nothing super awesome.

Here are a few tips I've learned the few times I've gone.

1. Grab your veggies first, then meats. Normally people will put meats first, then stack veggies on top. This makes it hard for you to stack things b/c if it's too high, the veggies will fall off. If you put veggies first, then you can use the meats weight to weigh down the veggies, allowing you to have more of density in the bowl. More density = more food.

2. Ask for double starch (double rice, double noodles, double whatever). It's free. You get more food this way.

3. If you are still hungry after this (most ppl aren't), you can get another bowl for only like $2 bucks or something. You can also take this to go if you want. Don't quote me on this as I've never done it before (buying the 2nd bowl for $2).

Well it obviously goes both ways. Some people like customization and may not like whatever someone else is putting together for them. Selecting ingredients and sauces is pretty simple if you know what you're doing. From the fact that they are able to charge a higher price than regular stir fry places, it seems that many people do put value on that flexibility.

The grocery store comparison isn't really fair. If you get the same variety of ingredients available you'll end up with several meals worth of food, and you'd have to figure out what to do with the rest of the ingredients. Cheaper? Sure, but that often comes at a "price" of buying a lot more than you need.

Maybe it's just a local thing but we never pay full price at GG here. There's always some sort of B1G1 free or B1G1 half off deal going on.

If you think it's overpriced you need to work on your packing/stacking skills. I've seen people with towers of meat (veggies on bottom) in 1 bowl.
