I'm running 3x128MB PC133 (all brand names) but I want to stick a 512MB in there, replacing a 128MB making it 768MB total. Is going from 384MB to 768MB negligible for the most part ?

Can't afford to spend too much and I see pricewatch has GENERIC brand 512MB PC133 for around $60 total. Think I should ? Or should I always stick to brand name ?

Not O/C'ing my 1GHz T-bird. Just want more RAM to run games for one... and a lot of other times I multitask (web dev stuff, etc.). Is generic sufficient ?

What's a heat-spreader and do I need it ?

I've never had luck with generic. I either run into program errors or the sticks just die. I'd prefer brand name over generic anyday. I don't think you need heatspreaders, unless your overclocking your ram.

I have gotten away with generic ram - both PC-100 and some newer DDR sticks. But I felt as if I took a chance and just had good luck. You definitely do take a chance. The $60 is about 2/3 of the way to the price of a brand name, and that would be a lot safer.

my vote would be for name branded ram, just get the value line or whatever. it'll be worth it

I remember the older athlon boards being picky about ram. I got generic 133Mhz ram just once. Had to run it at 100Mhz to even be stable. Haven't got generic since. Heatspreader isn't needed sdram doesn't get that hot.
