BS! you are encouraged to buy quality chipset because it costs alot more.
I went to a website called smksuperstore.com/1stchoicememory.com/digi4me.com and says neither my syntax sv266ad (not listed) or ecs k7vta3 v5.0 is
compatible with generic ram and that I must buy the most expensive type like 64.99 for 256mb, MY GOSH!!!:beer::D
anyway I am using only generic now, two 256mb module in two different computer that I bought from them and it works fine! btw, sis chipset only? yea right.

Generic Ram is great unless you feel like overclocking or want tighter latency timings, then i would have a tendancy to go with the name branded stuff.

generic ram is fine if you dont overclock yeah. Most of the people in here are enthusiasts though and overclock and want to squeeze as much as they can out of their system. If running at cas 2 instead of cas 3 imporoves general usage performance by 1% they will.. at least some of them :p

ram is overrated unless overclocking

I tend to stick to brand names but stay to Value series (Value Select, Samsung..etc)

My k7vta3 v5.0 works perfectly with generic ram.

In fact it has two different 'brands' of generic ram ('red' and 'green') running in it right now, and it's never had a hiccup.

Only the hardcore OCers need premium ram to get good performance form their systems.

For the price of most OC'd systems with premium ram you could build two systems with generic ram, no raptor, and a stock hsf;)

That doens't mean you shouldn't spend the money for a good psu though - every issue I ever had with a computer other than actual hardware failure was related to the psu.

It's not a matter of if it will work or not but if it will overclock or not or you want the additional 1 FPS speed. Not to mention if it'll will last as long as the chipset. I've had generic rams died on me and it was a PITA to find out which ram went dead or malfunction. I won't go for the cheapest but I won't go for the most expensive one either. Usually, with generic rams I stick with Samsung and Infineon.

I've had 256mb pc3200 just crapped out on me or probably was defective to begin with because my computer keeps crashing with this one. had a 512mb pc133 went bad as well, lol. the low price you pay for generic = gambling with defective rams :brokenheart:
But in the end I'd still pay less because for the price of 4 sticks of generic still cost less then 2 stick of standard ram. and so far only 1 out of 4 or 5 went bad, woohoo!
