General Question for IT Managers

For those of you that are IT Managers over small to medium businesses, what is typically the ratio between IT employees and users that you like to maintain? I've heard 1:30 from a few locals, but I'd like to try to corroborate this information on a larger scale.

Any documentation you can point me to that might help provide this information would also be greatly appreciated.

...I wasn't exactly sure where to post this, but I figured that if IT Managers were hanging out anywhere, here would be as good a place as any.

Thanks for the space.

Well, I can post experience from two different jobs, my current one and my last one.

At my last job, when I started working there, the ratio was 1:150. Ouch. By the time I left, it was 1:50, but we were so mired down in massive projects, that we still functioned like it was 1:150. Glad I left there, I was dead by the time I got home every night...

At my current job, it is 1:60. However, it should be noted that the 1 in the ratio is me, and me alone.

Here were I work the ratio is 1/100. But to be honest, that is a bit too much. I don't have near enough time to do things that I'd like to be able to do.

It works fairly well though. On large projects we bring in a consultant or temp people.

Roger that! I support around 100 users at my agency and it's very hard to do the fine tuning that I would love to do to our network. I actually had to migrate from a NT4.0/Exchange 5.5 domain to Active directory and Exchange 2003 in a weekend all by myself. It sure would have been nice to have another person to bounce ideas off of and lend a different perspective to the migration. It went well, but it sure was a lonely weekend. 🙂

1:15 per team is what i had at a large ISP . We had to monitor them constantly , update the status messages, and check through ICQ logs.
