General Hardware system builds, three budgets

The systems should probably be built without overclocking in mind, despite how simple it can be.

In any case, I don't think the builds need to be extremely price specific; it should just be an estimate. Perhaps a once a month update or even two months would be suffice for this, or when new hardware gets released. It's more of a general outline to get people started and to answer the simple questions.

As well, they should rely on themselves to find the lowest prices. The Hot Deals forum alone does wonders. If someone is making a few hundred dollar investment, who do you think should be responsible for finding the best prices?

I would further revise "seemingly random"'s categories down to:
  • HTPC (2 config only*)
    • midrange $500-$1500
    • high end $1500+.
*There should be many optional HTPC upgrades like blu-ray, sonos gear, a large 1080P LCD or projector instead of regular computer monitor, etc.
  • Gaming PC (3 configs)
    • budget $500-$800
    • mid $750-$1250
    • high end SLI $1500 and up
  • Office PC (1 config only*)
    • $400-$500
*because "power" SOHO users should just buy the gaming one and downgrade the video card)

Some of the suggestions given above are very good but they already assume knowledgeable users.

There is a lot of info in the specific forums (Motherboard, CPU, Memory, etc.) . about hardware and prices.

The issue is with new users, and users that did not upgrade for long time, and thus in need for an entry point (which we want to provide) and then would take it further.

^ Which is a good reason to stick to 3 generic builds; the econobox, the mid range, and the high end. As for pricing, I don't think it needs to be pinpointed completely either. The builds we want to recommend are shells to push people in a certain direction. Once they have an idea of what they want, it isn't a sin to make their own thread.
