Geforce4 MX 420 64MB PCI...............$79 @ BESTBUY

I found BESTBUY has Visiontek Geforce4 MX 420 64MB PCI for $79 after $30 rebate. (there is no info on their website)

This is could be extremely great deal to those need good PCI video card for their small system.....like Shuttle's SV24, 25 or their new SS40 mini system.

Good offer !
It will be faster than GF2MX , which can be found for about this same price on the web, so it is a deal....

is this for real??? i didn't think there would be any GF4's PCI at least this soon and this kind of price...I just bought a GF2 MX PCI last month to replace my Voodoo3 for $80.....are there any links?

nice deal...if it's for real. guess i'm going to BB tomorrow.

I was thinking of adding a PCI vid card and running dual monitors on my machine....this would be perfect!

thanks for the post

<< I didn't think there would be any GF4's PCI >>

hmm...I am hurt. 🙁 I wouldn't post anything that is NOT certain since 1999. (that's kind of long time....)

This is a DAMN good deal for anyone with an uber-mini LAN box who has no AGP slot only PCI slots. I'm one of them........except that I don't have no stinkin' $$$ left for one!!! Noo!!!

Dunno about the GF4MX but the GF2MX PCI cards sure had VERY poor performance when compared to their GF2MX AGP brothers... Last I checked, the V5 5500 PCI cards were still the best PCI performers.

If anyone finds different, please post the benches here. 😉 Think the world needs a new PCI vid card.

my GF2 mx pci runs MOHAA a lot better than my V3 2000 PCI did....I'm about to head out for the night but, has anybody seen benchmarks for the pci gf4 yet?? I'm just wondering if it's worth going through the headache of getting the gf4 pci over my gf2 mx pci which i just installed last month...thanks

PCI versions of cards seem to be skipping 4 generations now... This is a GREAT deal on the best PCI card out there now. I have a voodoo5 5500PCI on this comp and a MX200 PCI on the other comp(My dad went crazy and bought 2 dell GX110s w/ no AGP slot off ebay "Because its a solid brand") They seem to be about equal, with this card coming in better on some games and the mx200 being better at others. It sucked for those stuck with PCI slots to only be able to use a 2 year old economy graphics card that performed as well as their 3 year old ubercard.

This will at least be a step up.

For all those who think mx420 sucks: It is mislabelled really, in order to fit in with their marketting department. There are 3 basic cores(each card has many modifications) for the Geforce line:
The Geforce 1 (first T&L GPU)
The Geforce 2 (Used on all Gf2's and on the Gf4mx420-460 line)
The Geforce 3 (Programmable effects core, used on all Gf3's and on Gf4 ti4200-4600 line)

The mx420 has a very high clocked Gf2 core, with SDR memory and one new feature, the Lightspeed 2 memory architecture, which makes VASTLY improved z-occlusion culling possible, improving framerates 20-60% over a similarly clocked Gf2 GTS

The mx440 and 460 are the same as the 420, but higher clocked and with DDR memory

Since the main bottleneck in graphics cards is the memory, an mx460 is going to perform MUCH better than a 420. Even at the same clock, the 440 and 460 would go almost twice as fast as the 420 due to the DDR memory.

Still, the mx420 PCI beats the pants off anything PCI graphics cards had to offer before. The former front-runners were the gf2mx40PCI, the Kyro2 PCI, and the voodoo5 5500 PCI, but NVIDIA has finally asserted their dominance over the PCI sector.

@ $79, this is a burning hot deal, as the PCI card market isnt very competitive(compared to AGP) and PCI cards are sometimes even more expensive than their superior AGP brothers.

Quotes from Toms Hardware:

(MX420) ... Its 166 MHz SDRAM memory will slow down the performance of the GeForce4 MX chip so much that it will hardly perform any better than previous GeForce2 MX400 cards that you can get for a mere 50 bucks.

...none of the GeForce4 MX cards has full DirectX 8.x support, because of its lack of vertex and pixel shaders.

GeForce3 comes with full DirectX 8.x functionality, vertex/pixel shaders and lots of 3D power! If you can chose between a GeForce3 card and a GeForce4 MX card for similar prices, I would clearly go for the GeForce3!

Only reason I would buy this would be for the PCI bus. Don't buy it for the GPU.

lemme straighten this out a little

GF256 - hardwired T&L, great for CAD. 4x1 pixel pipes/textures per pass
GF2 - same as above with very minor modifactions, excepting that it had dual texture units for each pipe, making it 4x2 instead of 4x1.
GF2MX - same T&L, with a 2x2 ratio. which would have been fine except it had crappy memory.
GF3 - vastly improved memory controller, programmable T&L, slight modifications to rest of core from GF2. 4x2.
GF4 - even better memory controller, one more T&L pipe. 4x2
GF4MX - the same as GF2MX but it features a better memory controller. whether its based on the GF3 or GF4 one i don't know. whichever one it is, they castrated it by making it able to address only 128 and 64 bit chunks, rather than 128, 64, and 32. GF3 still performs better than GF4MX, which is why nvidia is rushing to kill the GF3, just like they killed the GF256 with the first MX.

the only reason to get this is if you need PCI, but its not much faster than a GF2MX at the same clock.

/me thinks of an interesting experiment in underclocking to see just how much better the mem contoller is better on the GF4MX than on GF2MX.

I suspect nvidia isn't even sending out these card for hardware sites and reviewers to benchmark.
Either that or no one in there right mind would review one.

You'd be surprised. Search hardocp.com for reviews, or try bluesnews.com or anandtech, or some other hardware sites. Many have reviewed the 4mx 420, or at least underclocked the other mx ones to work like a 420.

Remember folks, the geforce 4 mx is for incredable performance in TODAY'S games, not tomorrows. Its basically a souped up geforce 2 as has been mentioned. It does NOT have any of the new tech from geforce 3 or geforce 4, and does not support some of the directx 8 and 8.1 features (like the vertex shaders and stuff). It will seriously SUCK in tomorrows games. If you want to be able to keep up with todays and tomorrows games, get a geforce 3, or wait until the geforce 4 4200 comes out.

You can't underclock the geforce4 mx440 to the mx420 clock speeds and compare, the mx420 uses SDR ram while the mx440 uses DDR.
I still haven't found a site that review this specific card, anyone know any?

This card is awful in 3D. If you're just looking for a second video card for dual monitors, why spend $80 on this POS? There are a lot of 2D PCI options out there.

if anyone bought this from bestbuy, can you please post the spec on it? what brand it is..etc. thanks.

i have a GeForce2 MX400 on my Gateway 6400 server which doesn't have a AGP slot, just want to know if it's worth it to upgrade.
