Chew on this...

The Bottom Line

The HD 5970 delivers faster gaming framerates compared to the GeForce GT 580. However, if you look at the actual usability of those frame the picture is a bit different. The GeForce GTX 580 allows a consistently higher level of the gameplay experience compared to the Radeon HD 5970. We were able to game at higher settings with the GTX 580 than we were with the Radeon HD 5970. The most important factor, beyond framerates, is the visual quality and experience returned by the product. The GeForce GTX 580 allows a more immersive, smoother, and consistent quality of gameplay.

single gpu is always >>> dual gpu as long as performance is close. 5970's time is over, time for 6990 already...

Sort of a strange time do such a review, the 5970 is EOL. But I guess [H] needs some filler articles before the real battle begins, 6970 vs. the GTX580. Should be fun.

So the 580 was better in two games, the 5970 was better in two games, and 1 game was a wash.

I don't see why anyone would pick an older generation card over newer tech at similar price points (unless you really need something like Eyefinity in this situation). Would have liked to see more games tested, but all this really does is make me slightly more impatient for the 69xx series. ;)

The 5970 is a tiny bit faster... but it probably costs more.
Id get whichever was cheaper at the time.

Read the review , the 5970's minimums are crappy and performance is very inconsistant.

Read the review. In 2 of the 5 games tested the 5970 had lower minimums and less smooth gameplay. That still leaves 3/5. :p

What I would like to see is the visual difference between 8x and 4x AA at 2560x1600. I didn't think there was much point going beyond 2x or even 4x AA at that resolution, but I could be wrong as I've personally never played at that res.

Are we reading the same review?

F1 2010: 13 Vs 32 (Dips for a moment, but yeah crappy performance none the less)
CIV V: 0 Vs 1 (wow 100%(Actually infinitely) better min FPS for GTX 580)
BF:BC2: 17 Vs 22
MOH: 64 VS 63
2033: 24 vs 23

I've been so busy with work I haven't posted my results with my 580s but both of them have hit 950c in sli and are absolute beasts. Will have full tests up in a few days

If you see the 5970 graphs you can see large variance - it seem that the 1GB ram is limiting it at 8xAA in a couple of those games.

The 5970 is a year old, end of life, and cheaper than the GTX580. It comes with all the negatives of a dual GPU set up, so this is not too surprising. What is surprising is how when the GTX460 SLI set up was touted here by some members, none of the dual GPU short comings were an issue then. Now with the 5970 vs. GTX580, multi-GPU issues suddenly are worth talking about...

How good or bad are the drivers for the 5970?

They are fine. They are actually the best of any 5series card. The keep the drivers for the 5970 to pretty high standards. They have to for the people who put $700 down on one.

Are there screenshots anywhere that show the difference between 4x and 8x AA at 2560x1600?

The products are made by two different companies, its not like they behave the same, beyond they both use 2 gpu's.
Its like saying every single gpu ,performs the same.

Also the fanboys did not write all the articles featuring/praising GTX 460 SLI in many different comparisons with other cards. Which is why it was talked about alot. I believe one of them , was comparisons with the 5970.

The release of the dual gpu AMD card is pushed to sometime in 2011. The 6970, might :) come out on the 12/13 .
