I think nVidia has a problem on their hands with the 480. It is definitely quite loud. When i first heard it I thought, vaccuum cleaner. It also drinks a lot of power under load and gets pretty darn warm. Add these three things to the whole mix and its a problem for nVidia. And I haven't even mentioned pricing. I'm not brand loyal and I love nVidia cards but even I have to say nVidia has a problem. Now can the noise problem be solved? Probably with a better cooler on it but then if its aftermarket that is another cost on top of what the buyer already has paid for the card. Yes, nVidia has a problem. The next question is how will they fix it?
I just don't know why people are making such a big stink about the noise. GTX480 isn't much/any louder than some of nVidia's GTX200 cards. Just seems like people are making a mountain out of an anthill with this issue. Fermi's noise levels are at the upper end of what most people would probably consider acceptable, but they aren't unheard of. It's not like GTX480 is the first card to get really loud under load, and I'm sure it won't be the last.

It gets really loud though, and when its loud its still hot so theres not a lot of wiggle room left to tune the fan.

And its got what looks like a monstrously good cooler on there already so I'm not sure how much better the after market ones will be.

The difference is: I've had a relatively loud card in the past and will never get one again. Cost, performance and harshness are at about the same level of importance for me now. My office is next to my kids' bedrooms while my prime gaming time is when they sleep, I can't possibly have a card which can be heard downstairs!

If I were *given* a GTX480 with the stipulation I use it every day I'd likely refuse it. A 470 is in the running though, and I'll be following pricing on that bad boy after release. My needs are different than most, though -- I'm a forced NV fanboy because I multiboot my machine to Linux and Solaris, and ATI non-windows drivers are dire.

I know we're gaming hardware enthusiasts, but there are limits. I'm an auto enthusiast as well, but I don't want a top fuel dragster to commute in for the same reason I wouldn't want a video card that idles at 65C with the fan cranked up.

It doesnt seem to have an annoying sound though, like high pitched etc, its "airy" so even if it gets loud its not really bothersome, I think (dont have a card so :p)

Probably wont even notice it with music/games on, though it could get bad at night when things get more silent

Did you hear the videos when it actually gets up to load? It's ridiculous. My buddy used to have a fan like that in his PC and whenever he brought it up to game we'd harass him for polluting the room with noise. It really is annoying.

He's still right in claiming that AT isn't right about it being the loudest card they've ever tested. 77db(5800FX Ultra) is quite a bit louder than 64.1db(480).

Well, to put it in a nutshell... Its too loud and we don't like it. That about sums it up. I'm not trying to sound like a jerk but we expect better from nVidia for the price we have to pay for it. I would say the same for ATI too if it was their card. Just my opinion and how I feel about it.

While I expect better of NV also, the sound just doesn't bother me. 480 would go into my gaming PC, I use 5.1 headphones and I can't hear a fucking thing outside of them when they're on so I honestly could careless how loud it is.

Not sure at this point who got 77db on 5800 and who got 64db on 480.

HardOCP had 60db on the 5800 Ultra and 57db on the GTX480 and hopefully tested them the same way over the years.

FWIW I feel the same way. I tend to look for the best card that uses <=50w, because I don't need a lot of performance and can't stand fan noise (currently use a HD4670 w/passive cooler installed, which offered great performance per watt at the time I bought it). But I don't claim to represent enthusiasts. Like I said, some of the GTX200 series have about the same noise level and they sold fine (although as others have pointed out, they probably had more room to reduce fan speed than the GTX480 does).

isn't it over 80c all the time while gaming? lol. Just sayin.

And hardocp had videos and audio. The 480 was annoying loud. The 470 seemed perfectly fine to me. :)

Still, I bet the oems will come up with better cooling solutions soon! I think that if nvidia can price the 470 = the 5850 it'll be a huge hit.

Wasn't it AT who said they got 77db on the 5800?

I am leary about the longevity of the GTX 480. So far both of my my GTX 280's have failed me at around the 9 month mark. I overclocked the first one a bit, nothing extreme, the second one I left stock and never overclocked it. In both cases the GPU itself was fine, but the memory or memory controller failed. So, while the GPU itself might be sturdy, what about the heat in generates to the rest of the card? Both cards were EVGAs and covered under warranty, but it is a major pain to RMA things, even with a company as great as EVGA.

I know that I could have gotten two bad cards, or maybe two flaky cards and I know that the GTX 480 isn't the same as a GTX 280, but both were the pinacle of performance for their time and both have some hefty power requirements.

Fan noise *is* a concern... If you wear head phones while gaming, I could understand it not bothering some people. But I don't see how people can say this isn't a big deal. I have a portable eletric heater + fan that I use in the winter, and even an 8800GT fan spinning at full speed is louder... I can't stand it. But with all fairness, I wasn't always of this opinion. There was a time where performance mattered most and I could not have cared if my room sounded like a tornado... People change I guess. I consider performance per watt, noise and performance now when purchasing a video card. I honestly believe nVidia has released a dud here. It works, it is fast... But it is loud and power hungry. I don't like it.

I used X1800XT before which was 103W. The hot air blowing out at load from the slot cooler is enough to make my hand burn from 5cm. I can't imagine what it's like with a 250W GTX 480.

I am happy I kept my PA120.3, it makes getting 2 480s more palatable. No need to worry about this noise nonsense.

FWIW I've had an FX 5900 gainward golden sample. Still have it too, NOTHING is louder than that card. I PROMISE. It sounds like a dirtbuster.

O rly?

I would love to see the review which says this. Also, the fan speeds better be the same. Otherwise you can just put one on auto and the other on 100%.

Dude I'm not going and finding you the review . I read it. I read all 15 of them, not just the benchmarks.

Numerous reviewers warned against touching the heatsink on the GTX480 after a gaming session because they burned themselves when trying to do so.

GTX480 obviously runs hotter than the 5870, reviews state it and it's the reason people are getting put off by the reviewed and illustrated noise levels of the GTX480. It takes a seriously friggen fast (Read: LOUD!) spinning fan to cool the thing off.
