I don't think AMD sitting on their laurels on process nodes had anything to do with Core 2 rocking their boat. It took Phenom II on 45nm in 2009 for AMD to properly compete with 65nm Core 2.
Of course, by the time it came out they were competing with 45nm Core 2 and a vastly superior Nehalem.
45nm in 2006 was not feasible, so I don't think them not pursuing smaller than 65nm has any truth at all.
Phenom (I on 65nm) was inferior to Core 2 but at least it competed better than K8 did. If they launched that in 2006 instead of 2008 then they would have done better. But I don't think they took anything for granted. They had serious revenue problems despite having a superior product due to illegal anti-competitive practices from Intel. They never had the R&D budget so them falling behind is logical. Zen somewhat catching up to Lake is a far bigger shocker than this.
