Geforce GTX 1060 Thread: faster than RX 480, 120W, $249

I was about to order an EVGA 1060 from Amazon. It was out of stock but it would ship to me as soon as it came in stock. Then I suddenly noticed I had a $30 Amazon gift card sitting in my account. Ended up saying screw it, let's go big and ordered a 1070. Sigh. It's in stock, too.

My wife is going to kill me.

1060 isn't as bad as 960. But yes, one year down the line, it's going to fall far behind a 480. Particularly when every new game is DX12.

Yea, after all the complaining about nVidia and Intel fans crapping in AMD threads, half the posts in this thread seem to be about how all games will soon be DX12 and nVidia cards will suck. I mean, you would think 1060 wont be able to play DX12 games at all from the FUD that is flying around these forums. And even worse, there is a 480 thread if AMD "supporters" want to extoll the 480 and how it will be so fantastic in DX12/Vulcan.

IMHO, don't upgrade a 970 to a 1060, the performance boost just isn't there to justify it.

If you are looking to upgrade, sell your 970 and get a 1070, that'll be a worthwhile upgrade. But if your 970 is humming along fine in the games you play, I'd save the money and upgrade later. New technology is always on the way and money saved today buys you better performance tomorrow.

While it is a guess, it is quite plausible that unless the DX12 game is Gameworks title, like Return of the Tomb Raider, 1060 wouldn't possibly beat 480. Also, AIB 480 should be on shelves end of this week or so.

Personally, 960 was more compelling a choice as it was the only card which had respectable gaming, plus hardware acceleration for h265 built in. This time around, it's more balanced on all accounts. Gaming is a bit of a draw this time, with future titles most likely going AMD's way. Both have similar hardware acceleration abilities, with AMD offering h265 hardware encoding option on top of it.

If you do like what Gameworks titles that are there, and would come by, then Nvidia is a better buy. As those titles specifically are designed to perform poorly on anything but Nvidia products. However, i personally don't and wouldn't ever support such shady way of doing business, as it hurts us consumers in the long run and so i buy gameworks titles really really cheap, like when they hit $5. That's just me though, and you're free to make your own mind.

I feel that all Nvidia cards have been good lately. The main issue I have is with the price, and honestly, this card should be $200 and the 1070 should be called a 1060ti and should cost $300.

GTX1060 is certainly not a ripoff some people are saying.$250 for 980 performance is good am sure most will agree.People paid $550 for this kind of performance just 2 years ago! And its faster and more efficient as well,not to mention cheaper than RX480 in many countries including mine.Maybe it won't age as well as RX480 but we don't know that for sure,we can only speculate so for now 1060 trumps the 480.
But i suggest waiting for RX470,In DX12 and Vulcan maybe it will actually match the 1060 all for $100 less.So RX470 is the final trump card AMD has so just hurry up and release it already!Oh and please get your international prices under control.Still can't wrap my head around how 1060 is good bit cheaper than RX480!

GTX1060 is a great card depending on where you're upgrading from or if you're building a mid-range gaming box at a certain pricepoint.

I was strongly considering one but ended up going with a 1070 for various reason. The thing is, as others said, 980-level performance for $250 is pretty solid if you're coming from something lower than a 950 or even older than that. For people who have 970s and 980s, yeah, forget about the 1060 for now. But say I was building a system from scratch. A Skylake i3-6100, or an i5 with a 1060, 16gb ram, decent mobo=decent, strong platform for mainstream gamer who needs to get work done, too.

Picked up the GA-1060 Windforce for $250 today at Microcenter. Good performance @ 1080 for my nephews. Time to retire my aging HD 5870 2GB they've been enjoying.

With the current Humble Bundle deal, snagging them a few games too. Going to be a fun weekend.

dude as I said ref 480 vs ref 1060 is not going to matter when we have custom 480 vs custom 1060 cards. You are going to see a lot of custom 480 reviews in the next 2-4 weeks which will clarify what I said. As I said earlier overall we will see <5% lead for Nvidia in DX11 and >5% lead for AMD in DX12/Vulkan. Right now the showpiece Vulkan title Doom is a mighty embarrassment for GTX 1060 as it gets thrashed by 25-30% by Rx 480. Sorry but thats just pretty darn amazing for Rx 480. If you average out the DX12 perf of Rx 480 and GTX 1060 in AoTS, Hitman, Gears of War Ultimate Edition, Quantum Break, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Total War Warhammer and Vulkan Doom you will see that the margin is >=10%. btw thats ref 480 vs ref 1060. custom 480 vs custom 1060 will see that gap widen while the dx11 lead of 1080 will shrink.

Do you think custom RX 480 will be cheap like the reference though? It seems like AMD really cut corners with the reference cooler to hit those low price points.

Considering they only did a preview of the 1080, and the 1070 only showed up through a preview of the RX480, don't hold your breath. I am glad the forums are holding up though. At least we can find places to find real reviews of these cards.

rx480 had a day one pre-view at least.. kind of scary. Anandtech has been my favourite review site for going on 16+ years.

I would like to take a moment to just appreciate what amd and nvidia are both offering gamers under $300 right now. Max settings 1080p with good frame rates. Truly a good time to be a pc gamer.

I think $250 560 Ti and $200 560 were good times for the under $300 gamers. That's a fully enabled x04 (or 114 in this case) chip for $250. And it was far closer to the current flagship card (580) in performance:

GTX 500 vs Radeon 6000 was the golden age of competition for gamers. $500 Titan P equivalent. $250 GTX 1080 equivalent.
