geforce fx5500 information

I noticed that nvnews has found some more info on the geforce fx5500.

The website hardspell benchmarked it against a r9600se and the performance of the fx5500 was very similar. The 9600se usually has a 64bit memory bus and with the scores being so close makes me wonder if the fx5500 they used is the same.

Don't you just hate video cards with a 64bit memory bus, usually you don't even know until you get the video card home and it's performance is crap. 🙁

I do, damn it when the hell are they going to discontinue 64 bit busses!?

One of the worst offenders for selling 64bit video cards without any warning on the box is XFX. Take their fx5200 (64bit) for example, they are even using the old fx5200 (128bit) box and all of the stats are therefore incorrect for the fx5200 (64bit). :disgust:

Yea, that's pretty sad that they're making a GPU that "rivals" a 9600se, that's like competing for the bottom of the barrell, except nobody cares

Except for ignorant ppl like you. Not all of us have hundreds to spend on a GPU. This is for the low-end market, I just recently built a computer for a friend as a family PC that had a Radeon 9100. It serves it's purpose, and plays occasional light games very well. The 5500 is just another card made for this large market segment.

how was that an ignorant comment? and there is ABSOLUTELY no need for the 9600SE, the 5200, and now this 5500. there are better cards out there for the SAME prices. mainly the 4200.

Exactly, I already PM'd that moron, Awwww what's the matter stardust? buy a 64-bit card and now you're got a case of, "I own it so it's the best"? We are basing this on facts, you are just basing this on what you know, which is very limited, and you've obviously shown that.

The FX5500 is an "improved" FX5200 designed for the sub $100 market. The Ti4200 is still above $100, I've seen a few deals around the $90 range and they are refurb. If you were buying an hp or compaq pc from a bestbuys you would definitely want an FX5500 over the FX5200 in your system.

Your changing the point, Sneakystuff said that nobody cares. If that is so, why are the low-end and main-stream graphic markets so large?

From his PM:

Piss off, take your unfounded posts somewhere else, and FYI, you don't need to spend hundreds of dollars for quality moron, 64-bit memory bandwidth is pathetic, and 128 bit is just as affordable, but oh wait, "IM" the ignorant one here. Don't even bother writing back either because im not going to waste my time reading it.

Did I say anything about 64bits? I made a comment on the fact you think that "nobody cares"

The FX 5500 is expected to fight in entry-level/mainstream market segments before the lower-cost versions of the NV40 emerge in mid-2004. The newcomer may deliver some exciting speed boosts for the targeted market segments, something NVIDIA?s customers have been waiting eagerly. The GeForce FX 5500 chip may also improve the margins of NVIDIA because of improved GPU design and/or manufacturing technology.

Edit: fixed link

the 4200 is under 100 if you have any brains at all to look around.

and the low end market is so large partly due to ignorance.

"OOHHH!!!!! 256 megs of memory! it must be good!"
or "AGP8X!!! WOW! and here i am a sucker only using my old 4X card!"
or "I better get a new DX9 video card or else im screwed!!!!"
or "5200 is a higher number than 4200, so it must be better!"
or "9600 is higher than an 8500, i better upgrade"

you get the idea...

that comment means NOTHING. thats like saying mcdonalds' customers are eagerly awaiting their new burger. of course Nvidia would say that. im sure some customers are waiting eagerly, the retarded ones i described in my last post.

Not everyone knows how to build computers. Prebuilt PC's are still more popular, and most of them use low-end, mainstream graphics.

EDIT: In other words, it's for the benefit of the people who fall for the tricks you listed. I think the FX5200 should be replaced as soon as possible.

Yeah, seems like your his [replace word with female dog]
The FX5500 specs are entirely speculation. No one knows if it'll have 64bits.

From original nvnews link:

I was sent this link by Wish on IRC. It's a peformance graph of NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce FX 5500. The graph states that the core is clocked at 250MHz and memory at 200MHz, although there is no mention about how wide the memory interface is. The headline will link to the original website from where these pictures originate and is in Chinese. The GeForce FX 5500 is set to battle it out in the budget sector.

So that makes me a Canis Americana? Wow, you're a fruitcake, please stop embarassing yourself. I don't think anyone even cares about this post anymore.

so basically your agreeing that the 5500 is for ignorant people who dont research their video card. in which case, i agree. the 5500 is an "upgrade" from the normal dog pooh they would be recieving which we call the 5200.

's for the ignorant people getting this "upgrade"

No, pre-built computers at local stores don't give you much of a choice in selection video cards. On the note on bandwidth, if the "benchmarks" state it's as much as twice as fast as the 9600se, doesn't that sort of rule out the 64bit possibility? If it is still 64bit, it must be pretty amazing.

people buying pre-built rip-off computers at local stores fall into my personall "ignorant" category. but thats justs me, and people have different opinions 😉

nice you guys are patting each other on the back, however the fact is more ppl care about the entry level market than they do the enthusiast market.

the high end holds the prestige which trickle down to the lower end stuff, but there are many times the number of ppl buying $100 gfx cards than $500 ones.

why do you think ati just didn't care that much for the longest time? cause they sold tons of lower end cards, oem gpu's, and mobile gpu's. it wasn't until nvidia started eating away at that market share before ati made serious attempts at making a high end gpu and maintaining it's drivers.

low-end and mid-range still reigns supreme in terms of $$ generated for the industry.

Of course, it seems some people like SneakyStuff fail to see my point. From the beginning he thought I was about to start a bandwidth war. I was just offended by his comment.

SS, when arguing in anandtech, please keep criticism constructive with information so people can learn something when reading threads like these. Otherwise, the word troll comes to mind.
