it still loses to ATI in the FSAA department

Where are they putting comparative screenshots between the various FSAA modes on the 9700 and GeForce FX? I went through the whole article looking for them, but didn't see them. How can you say that the GeForce FX is loosing to the 9700 when you don't know what the quality is like? I despise ignorant comments. The GeForce FX incorporates 3dfx technology. FSAA "QUALITY" is the big thing I'm going to be looking out for.

LOL, I was shot down over at the video section when some members told me that AA and AF is not important as long as they game in high res............

realistically, few people run games at 1600x1200 or more as few people have screens that can hold that resolution at a decent refresh rate. I think the emphasis should be on running @ 1024x768 w/FSAA and AF enabled.

The problem for nVidia will be that the people who buy a card like this will be looking to turn on all the goodies such as AA and AF at high res and they just cannot match ATI in this department. I mean, realistically, who the hell can tell the difference between 200fps and 250 fps w/o AA & AF? No one. nVidia will be winning most of the benchmarks that hold little relevance; ATI will be near nVidia and perhaps ahead in the benchmarks where it will matter to gamers (ie high res AA & AF enabled), which also happen to be the ones in which current GPUs struggle to maintain high FPS numbers.

On a side note, this is a bad start for Cg. Seeing results like these may cause programmers to just wait for the MS version of Cg to come out. Why would they use an nVidia-centric programming language if ATI is neck and neck with nVidia and a standard language is just around the corner.

I agree about the 1024 to 1280 range, as I've posted about before. But I'm thinking the GF FX will perform within +/- 10% of the 9700pro in that area. Bandwidth isn't as much of an issue at those resolutions (unlike 1600 or 2048), so the superior throughput of the GF FX should keep it in contention, even with AA and AF enabled.

Bandwidth is very important when AA is enabled. I forget the details, but I remember reading it was; ze German results certainly seem to support that idea

I play Unreal Tournament at 1600 x 1200 no AA/AF, or 1280 x 960 @ 4x AA, both give pretty similar performance on a Geforce 4 Ti 4400. I prefer the higher resolution though.
More and more peopl eare either getting LCD's with native 1024/1280, or 19" CRT's which they run at 1280 (I run my 19" @ 1600), therefore the best performance at 1280 is what you want to look at, since that's probably the new "standard".

Also, as has been said many times before, we need max/min FPS. I would rather have an FX if it gets 120FPS almost all the time (say 110~130), rather than a 9700 if it gets 130 (80~180). Not saying it will be like that, but it would be useful to have an idea, a bit late now the review has probably been done though.

While I expected the 9700 to keep up pretty well with the nv30, i am stunned by these benches. 'Driver optomization' is not the issue, as they have had an extra ~6 months to retool the card and they wont add that much performance anyway.

O well, guess the final verdict comes in tomorow.

I just hope that Anand in particular mentions the R350 as many times in his NV30 review as he mentioned the NV30 in his R300 review... I'll have lost all faith in him if not... though I wouldn't be one bit surprised if he talks more about the NV35...

Thats a very stupid comment by Ratchet, Anand was told(and so were we) that the nv30 wouldl come out in fall 2002.
If the nv30 came out last year Ratchet wouldnt even say that. Anand was right in his r300 review, it's just that nvidia fooked up.

I could have told you it would end this way. The MOST I expected nVidia to do was beat the 9700 Pro by a small margin. I have NEVER seen a video card come out like the 9700 Pro did!! The performance just blew the top video card (GeForce TI4600 at the time) out of the water. Everytime a new generation card comes out, it beats the previous video card king by a small margin. However, with the 9700 Pro, it felt like ATi jump two generations in the future and released a bomb (the 9700 Pro). I'm sure nVidia did all they could to even match the 9700 Pro. The GeForce FX might come out on top tomorrow, but it won't be by much. I really like nVidia, but I also call it as I see it. ;) I can't wait for the R350, it's going to be vicious! But I think nVidia's little showing tomorrow might push the cards release back. :(

The 9700Pro feels like the first 3Dfx Voodoo1 (maybe 2) all over again. :)
One competitor (Riva128) came close in speed but couldn't match it in quality.
All others were left far behind in the dust. :)

And...

Most people couldn't really get the most out of it until game developers really adopted the device and programmed for it.
People were still in software mode with their Voodoo1 cards with only one or two exceptions. By the time 3D was "the big thing" Voodoo1 was getting old. :D

Almost reminds me of the 2-3 years I had my AdLib music card before Leisure Suit Larry 2 came out. ;) (One of the VERY first music-supported games.)

Nef'ers like you would never notice, the fan scales down in 2D apps. :D

Chiz

it also throttles down when it gets to hot.

but yes i did notice that, and I will still stick to my comment, it is a$400 blow drier.
