I went to the City of Industry Fry's this morning to return some items and while I was there, took at look at their graphics card selection. As you would have guessed, all of the 8800GTs were sold out.
Took a look at the shelf tags and these are the ones they carry for now.
PNY XLR8 8800GT 512MB - $249.99
EVGA e-GeForce 8800GT 512MB (Vanilla Version) - $269.99
BFG GeForce 8800GT OC 512MB - $279.99

Hmm, that's very odd.
When I went to the same BB on 11/9 there were still 3, and I bought one.
On 11/10 at 10am, I returned it. So there should've been at least one left when you were there.

I finally found a best buy with a card in stock and I picked it up with the 12% off thing.
One thing of significance I noticed was that the receipt said that there is an extended return/exchange for items purchased in nov to dec 24th. The return policy is extended another 30 days until Jan 31st- so if I end up finding a different card online for cheaper by then I can just take this one back. I'm sure price and demand would have died down by then, but I hope I didn't miss any small print and that gfx cards don't need to be returned sooner.

I also noticed that some of the people who ordered the frys vanilla version of the 8800GT got a superclocked version in the box. You can add me to that group of people. I just checked ntune and my GPU is factory set at 650mhz!!! Anyone else find similar surprises in their 8800GT boxes?

I am one of those people. I wonder if I should try for more? i.e. 700mhz GPU. Funny thing is, everything else is labeled as it should be for a stock 8800GT. I guess EVGA might have had trouble filling orders so they threw in whatever cards they had available. There's an interesting thread in the ]H['s forums about this. I'll link it later.
Also, I do not think any prices above msrp is a hot deal at all. Regardless of demand and supply, selling something over msrp is NOT a hot deal, period. At this point in the game we as consumers should expect performance of this caliber at this price. We all so easily forget that we missed 2 product cycles. Ati was late and Nvidia saw no reason to compete with itself. So this is actually par for the course. I got caught up in the "pay xxx for gtx perfomance" with the 7900GTO, then the 8800's dropped.

Wooohooo. Jumped on this XFX alpha dog @600 from xpcgear.com. Reseller ratings is not fantastic, but at $264.99 was worth the money for to make sure I have something for thanksgiving break. Wanted CoH too. Anyways, can't wait to get my darn 6600gt out of my system. lol.

YES! Me too! That's the first time that's ever happened to me. I didn't get Quake Wars though, and I thought I was supposed to. I'll take a higher clock speed any day though![]()

Same here, got the evga frys "vanilla" version and its default speeds were 650/1900. And after placing a duorb on it I'm now at 725/1810/1900, with 55C load temps!

Hmmm, I think I'm gonna install a zalman on mine and see if I cant get those temps down so i can hit 700mhz. I think at 700+ mhz, the GT closes whatever performance gap that existed with the GTX.
I've gotten lots of good advice over the years here, so I thought I'd give back a little. I just purchased an EVGA 8800GT (650/1900), and have been surprised by the high temps (I had a 7800GT watercooled before, and it never passed 45C). To stress the card for these tests, I used Nvidia's Adrianne, which for some reason stresses the card more than Rthdrbl, or even Crysis... Maybe it's because she's always on the screen demanding max resources. Anyway, here's what I found on my system (a big case, Lian Li V2000, with plenty of ventilation):
Fan
Speed Temps
Auto 92C
40% 89C
50% 83C
60% 78C
70% 76C
80% 73C
90% 72C
100% 71C
I ran the demo, and let it run for 10 mins, and used ATiTool to record the highest temps. As you can see, Auto is just not working for me. The fan is not speeding up. I think that may be why some people are having trouble with artifacts and such. I have an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe, and although I can control the speed manually, it does not appear to be controlling the speed in auto.
The "sweet" spot for me (temps vs. noise) seems to be somewhere between 50% and 60%. At these speeds, the fan sound is not annoying and the cooling performance seems to drop off rapidly after this point (your PC may vary).
