I went to the City of Industry Fry's this morning to return some items and while I was there, took at look at their graphics card selection. As you would have guessed, all of the 8800GTs were sold out.

Took a look at the shelf tags and these are the ones they carry for now.

PNY XLR8 8800GT 512MB - $249.99
EVGA e-GeForce 8800GT 512MB (Vanilla Version) - $269.99
BFG GeForce 8800GT OC 512MB - $279.99

Would be nice if my Best Buy Exclusive sales event coupons would come ontime instead of a week later. Two times now.

Hmm, that's very odd.
When I went to the same BB on 11/9 there were still 3, and I bought one.
On 11/10 at 10am, I returned it. So there should've been at least one left when you were there.

I went to Fry's, not the Best Buy (BB) that you mentioned.

But if you did mean Fry's, I don't think the employees restock the shelves with returned items that quick. I was there around 11:30am.

I finally found a best buy with a card in stock and I picked it up with the 12% off thing.

One thing of significance I noticed was that the receipt said that there is an extended return/exchange for items purchased in nov to dec 24th. The return policy is extended another 30 days until Jan 31st- so if I end up finding a different card online for cheaper by then I can just take this one back. I'm sure price and demand would have died down by then, but I hope I didn't miss any small print and that gfx cards don't need to be returned sooner.

Be careful to note whether they have a "restocking fee" for returned items.
Some places charge like 15% on returns in that way. I don't recall if BB does
that nowdays or not.

Anyway 15% isn't the end of the world if you find a card before Jan 31 that's
more than $40ish cheaper / better / whatever anyway since you could still
benefit from the exchange even if so.

I mentioned previously in this thread that I got in on the EVGA 8800GT deal from Frys for $229. I used nVidia cards exclusively for several years, but for the last couple of years I've used two different ATI cards back to back. The 8800GT I got was the stock, non-overclocked version. The EVGA overclocked version shows the core/memory speeds at 650/1900 as opposed to the stock speeds of 600/1800. I downloaded the nVidia monitor tool and it's showing my GPU core speed at 648MHz and the memory speed at 950MHz, which would bee 1900MHz. So it seems that I got an overclocked version of the card. I thought I read someone else in this thread may have had the same thing. Obviously, I'm extremely happy about this, especially since I debated at first on whether or not I should pay the extra cash to get the OC version. Let me know if any anyone else has had the same results with purchasing the stock version of this card. Thanks!

I am one of those people. I wonder if I should try for more? i.e. 700mhz GPU. Funny thing is, everything else is labeled as it should be for a stock 8800GT. I guess EVGA might have had trouble filling orders so they threw in whatever cards they had available. There's an interesting thread in the ]H['s forums about this. I'll link it later.

Also, I do not think any prices above msrp is a hot deal at all. Regardless of demand and supply, selling something over msrp is NOT a hot deal, period. At this point in the game we as consumers should expect performance of this caliber at this price. We all so easily forget that we missed 2 product cycles. Ati was late and Nvidia saw no reason to compete with itself. So this is actually par for the course. I got caught up in the "pay xxx for gtx perfomance" with the 7900GTO, then the 8800's dropped.

YES! Me too! That's the first time that's ever happened to me. I didn't get Quake Wars though, and I thought I was supposed to. I'll take a higher clock speed any day though :D

Same here, got the evga frys "vanilla" version and its default speeds were 650/1900. And after placing a duorb on it I'm now at 725/1810/1900, with 55C load temps!

Though I got to admit the duorb is NOT quiet. It's not loud, but its def the loudest component in my computer now. I'm thinking about doing the 7V fan mod on it to quiet it down. The cooler is fanastic though other then that. With the stock cooler at 650/950 I was idling at 60C and hitting load temps over 100C! Now, even while overclocked, I idle at 35-40C and hit load temps of 50-55C!

Hmmm, I think I'm gonna install a zalman on mine and see if I cant get those temps down so i can hit 700mhz. I think at 700+ mhz, the GT closes whatever performance gap that existed with the GTX.

I'll assume you mean the vf900 cooler? If so check out this thread http://www.xtremesystems.org/f...owthread.php?p=2448738

shows the duorb beating the zalman by 9-18C depending on the zalman's fan speed. Though from hearing the vf700(I'm assuming it is as quiet as the vf900) I have to say it is WAY quieter then this duorb. The vf700 was completely silent from 3 feet away while the duorb is clearly heard 10 feet away, It's not annoyingly loud but it audible, so if you want silence the zalman is probally the way to go. I'll update with how noisy it is after doing the 7v mod.

Anyone else have the duorb? Could it be I got a faulty one that is noiser then it should be. According the the box its rated for 21dBa which should be whisper quiet right?

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IMHO there's a bug in the BIOS that makes the fan fail to work properly
in many (all?) 8800GTs.

People are saying the fan basically NEVER speeds up past its default low
idle rotation rate, and they hit like 90C to 100C temperatures under load
while the fan stays at a very slow speed.

Manually increasing the fan speed to 60% or higher makes the 8800GT
drop like 20C to 30C down to a much more reasonable 70C to 80C range!!!

You must use a tool like rivatuner or whatever to do the manual fan adjustment.

Some people have reportedly MELTED parts of the 8800GT because of this!!!!

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2114737&enterthread=y

I've gotten lots of good advice over the years here, so I thought I'd give back a little. I just purchased an EVGA 8800GT (650/1900), and have been surprised by the high temps (I had a 7800GT watercooled before, and it never passed 45C). To stress the card for these tests, I used Nvidia's Adrianne, which for some reason stresses the card more than Rthdrbl, or even Crysis... Maybe it's because she's always on the screen demanding max resources. Anyway, here's what I found on my system (a big case, Lian Li V2000, with plenty of ventilation):

Fan
Speed Temps
Auto 92C
40% 89C
50% 83C
60% 78C
70% 76C
80% 73C
90% 72C
100% 71C

I ran the demo, and let it run for 10 mins, and used ATiTool to record the highest temps. As you can see, Auto is just not working for me. The fan is not speeding up. I think that may be why some people are having trouble with artifacts and such. I have an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe, and although I can control the speed manually, it does not appear to be controlling the speed in auto.

The "sweet" spot for me (temps vs. noise) seems to be somewhere between 50% and 60%. At these speeds, the fan sound is not annoying and the cooling performance seems to drop off rapidly after this point (your PC may vary).

The American consumers tapped out their ATM's (their homes} and now credit card debt is going through the roof. If the retailers have a bad holiday season, then there will be lots of good post-Xmas sales.

On the otherhand, inflation is running over 11% annualized (if you believe the Fed's numbers, called hedonic pricing, you're either on some good drugs or are very ignorant) so we have a short window of opportunity.

And with the dollar at all-time lows, with no support level in sight, higher prices are inevitable, especially imports.

Happy Holidays,
Super6

Well said sir.....I believe you are correct on all fronts.

We are heading down. Though the economy hasn't reflected it yet, we are in for a world of hurt. People are transferring their spending habits from refinance money to CC debt. Cheers to living consumer debt free!
