That's pretty cool, but the slow memory still makes me wonder about the benefits. I guess it would help lower res performance though...

No benchmarks yet, this news is from just yesterday. The patch to Riva-Tuner isn't publicly available yet. No guarantees this applies to all 6800's but interesting news nonetheless.

I don't believe the regular 6800 will probably ever match the GT because of the difference in memory, but perhaps once the shortage of DDR3 chips subsides they'll start putting it on the regular 6800 and then you'll have a beast (althought, having half the amount of memory will still be there).

This would be nice for that one Asus card that has 256Mb of DDR3. Of course that card is being sold for more than a GT most everywhere I've seen it, so its probably not that smart of a buy right now.

This is nice nonetheless.

They were there,so why not unlock them? :D
Lack of more and faster memory would still make it inferior to GT but at low res could help a lot more.

Wow nice, may make the 6800 a more attractive option, if NV or other vendors decide to use DDR3 ram and maybe even 256mb or 512 mb ram the 6800 would be a beast. (Remember the 256mb 9600pros, which were supposedly a marketing gimmick, now if there was a 512mb DDR3 6800 as a "marketing gimmick," with ability to enable 16 pipes, the possibilities...:))

Didn't help me much. Those GT at NU speeds benches were about the same, although I suppose it was just one game that the NU already excels in.

What benches are you reffering too?

whoa....very exciting. I was going to get a 6800GT, but if for $300 I can score what is basically a GT anyway....(and I'd like not to spend more than $300 for a video card), that's a serious option.

The only gripe I have is that there aren't any 256MB 6800NUs...(if I'm wrong someone let me know).

You are wrong, the Asus V9999 has 256MB of 1GHz GDDR3.

These where I found a GT clocked at NU speeds performs the same as a NU.

True enough, there's always performance to be had by OCing.

<MrBurns> Excellent.... </MrBurns>

EDIT: Not so excellent...just found out that NewEgg/ZipZoomFly/GameVE all are selling the ASUS V9999 for $400+ - no reason not to get a GT :\

Oh I see. I have forgotten about these. 6800NU surely proves everyday that has a good value.
But Doom III as you eloquantly said isn't the only game out there...
I just don't believe in general that a 16pipe modded 6800NU will perform so good as GT at high res and AA/AF enabled in future games. It's a matter of more and faster ram.
It will be killer though for the price/perf ratio, especially if x800pro won't drop in price.

This is cool. Those 256 MB cards are nice... however I think they real jump in performance/need will be when we see 512MB cards.

Just ordered the MSI 6800 before I even read this thread. I was excited before, now I'm totally pumped!
