After 12 hours of turning the wheel and powering the server, the poor SOBs are lucky to get a gulp of water and two crackers before they work their overtime shift. Maybe some of them collapsed from heat exhaustion? Maybe a bengal tiger leaped on them and dragged half the crew off the wheel? Whatever. Why should I, as a very important American (with little time to spare), give two sheets either way?

While it might not be a help ATM, then when people get richer in other countries they start wanting new stuff and this should increase global trade, so it's just for every country to make the best business so they can export to the new markets. If you can't do that you must shut down your business. This is capitalism, the difference from old times to new times is that the market isn't longer national but global, or starting to be. Too true john, it is really funny to see people like sandorski here try to justify Heinz's operations due to their global market, but fail to recognize that any of the other companies that come under fire also cater to a global market...must be the short sightedness with focus on companies that only recently began to start manufacture in other countries whereas those who have been doing it for years should get a free pass?

Heinz could easily produce their products here and ship worldwide and meet all of their goals, however the cost would be far greater than it is now...they are just as guilty as any other company that is currently manufacturing off shore.

Not really, those who Outsourced have basically given up Manufacturing Domestically and now Import to meet Demand for their Products.

The reason I ask these questions is that the article makes the charge of Outsourcing, but only uses the amount of Foreign operations as evidence of Outsourcing, it's a meaningless bit of Data. If each operation Produces for a Local Market, then it's not "Outsourcing" or if it Processes a unique Product(say bananas)that is only Produced in a distant Locale, that also is not "Outsourcing".

Foreign Operations have existed for a long time(since the inception of Multi-National Corporations) and for various reasons that have nothing to do with the phenomena of "Outsourcing". Some are to cut down on Shipping, others for Specialization of Products to particular Market tastes, and others are certainly Cost related(don't want to Export a $2 bottle of Ketchup to a Country where $2 of Wages is counted in Days of Labour when that bottle of Ketchup can be produced and sold at a fraction of that(all numbers made up)in that Country, thus increasing Sales.

So they should ship all the vegies from overseas here, and then make ketchup here and ship it back overseas? What a ridiculous idea? Should McDonalds overseas also ship meat and bread from the US? Or Coke should fill a tanker with water and ship it to Europe? It's one thing to produce locally for the local market, it's another thing to outsource to produce in China to sell in the US, like HP, Nike, etc have been doing.
