Get the government out of the marriage business. Marriage is a religous sacrament. If the gov't wants to sanction civil unions (tax breaks and such), that's fine, but that shouldn't be called a marriage (change marriage license to civil union). The various churches can then determine what is in accordance with their beliefs regarding homosexual couples and the sacrament of marriage.

Hee hee - well put!

When I was in AF training in Montgomery, the Chamber of Commerce put on a presentation crowing about the fact that Montgomery was largely the home of the civil-rights movement. Fine, it was, but it was only because the people in charge had legislated segregation, and were siccing dogs on, and spraying firehoses at peaceful protesters!

Meanwhile Zendari lives in NJ, about as far removed from Alabama, politically, as there is in the country. One wonders why, given the racist crap he spewed under another account, he doesn't just move to Alabama . . .

Yeah he could start his own Koresh-like compound where the women are preggers and in the kitchen, the men are real men and in shape (but definitely not gay) and everyone is armed to the teeth with automatic weapons in case a deer should wander onto the grounds. How does that sound Z?

Besides being Government control of a religious ceremony by one religious sects' definition (man+woman), a same sex ban accomplishes what purpose? With our Medical technology, gender is just a surgical process. Doesn't that throw gender difference out the window? And don't forget a shot of hormone at the wrong time could turn a X/Y baby with a penis into a X/Y baby with a vagina.

Do you know the poem about the Nazi take-over in Germany,
First the took away the Unionists, but I was not a Unionist and said nothing.
(Socialists, Communists, Jews, Lame & dull witted, etc.)
Then they came for me and none was left to say no.

Since the Civil rights movement ended and Reagan held office, hasn't our congress spent most of their time passing laws restricting the rights of the people?

Zen-

Do you think that homosexual couples shouldn't be afforded the same legal rights a straight ones? Other then getting "married" be it religious or otherwise, I mean, interms of taxes, medical decision, or whatever, why shouldn't two men or two women be afforded the same rights as a man and a woman? And why shouldn't they be allowed to actually be married? And don't say, "because it's the law" - It was also once the law that when performing the census the counted all free men as 1 and all slaves as 2/3rs or 4/5ths of a person... and clearly that changed. There are laws in some places making it illegal to NOT bring a gun to church, why, because they are old and obsolete laws from soceity was different, so again, I will ask... Why not?

The constitution and bill of rights are there for that.
I think there fine.
Yes, I have heard that poem.
can't remember the source but another one I like is "Evil triumps when enough good men do nothing."

Because there's no good reason why committed gay couples are less deserving of marriage and all the beneifts that come with it than straight couples.

If you were Jesus .. how would you define marriage?

Do you think Jesus would only say.. man and woman or would he say LOVE

Why did God create Hermaphrodites? and why do some women have far more testosterone than they are supposed to have and some have mustaches and some men have far more estrogen in their systems than they are supposed to have

If sex between man and woman is so important then why wasn't Jesus created that way?

Still boggles my mind - how can a self-proclaimed 'free' nation such as the US still prevent ppl from forming legally binding unions based upon their sex? Sure, people may oppose the idea of gay marriage based on the ancient notion that marriage should be between a man and a woman - but do they reject the idea of homosexual relationships as a whole? If not, surely same-sex couples should be granted the same legal rights as hetero couples if their intentions are honourable?

As for protecting family values, over half of all marriages end in divorce. Many spouses cheat at some time or another. Many couples have children without getting married. And many marriages do work out. Who's to say being gay is going to make marriage any easier or any harder?

Perhaps it is time to follow the examples of your neighbours across the pond: start calling soccer 'football', start spelling 'color' with a 'u' and give same sex-couples the same rights as every one else! Looking at the the statistics, it can't get much worse!

PS support England, World Cup 2006 :)

Ok, I firstly wanted to say, How in the hell did this topic not get locked in its first page? I can't believe that my topic about cigarettes got smashed in half a page and this thing has gone on for nine...

Anyways, I've got some serrious problems with what people are saying on here. I guess lets get some things out of the way. I've lived in AL pretty much my whole live, with the exception of three years in Germany, and another one traveling the states. I just cannot believ how hypocritical some people can be. How can you try and promote anti-discrimination when you are among the discriminators?! You talk about how gays should be allowed to be married, but instantly turn around and say Alabamians are close minded, bigots, in-breed, etc. What is wrong with your brain? How the hell is sterotyping and name-calling NOT discrimination!? On top of that, some people keep talking about how AL is in the past, still has KKK ****** going on, etc. The fact of the matter is, YOU people (the ones bashing AL, not everyone) are in the past. You cannot forget some stupid things in history that Alabamians did (on for the record, we were certainly NOT the only ones) DESPITE the fact that MANY directly involved have appologized and cried over their wrong doings (Wallace's appology to the black community over his stand at UofA) Some of you talk about how being black in AL is still 'alternative' You are fvcking insane. Go to ANY, ANY major city in AL and look at the black population, ESPECIALLY montgomery. I'm not saying they aren't a minority, but how the hell is that determined anymore? Look at it from Calos Mencia's view: "So i went to this big mall in birmingham, al...i looked around and was like. Where are all the white people? All i sea is beaners and N*" The majority of the population IS white, but it is not by much. The black people of Alabama have forgiven our predocessors for their wrong doings, why can't you?

Moving on. Bigotry. So ****** what if people in Alabama (and lots of states in the so-called 'bible belt' want to be religious? We dont bitch about people up northing wanting to be Unitarion and Scientologist. You people are SO close minded. You think all that exists in AL is stupid christian in-breed rednecks. There are at least 40 non-christian 'churches' i can think of in the Birmingham area off the top of my head. Now, i know this is hardly proportional to the amount of christian churches, but that is someone's personal preferance, just as gay marriage, no?

And those of you who still think everyone is inbreed and like to make jokes about how Alabamians marry their sister. I have yet to see proof that there is as large as a problem as you make it out to be, despite the fact that there are plenty of states who have had cases such as this. You think alabamians just brush it off like its no big deal. Wrong, people despise inbreeds more than AYTHING here. I'm not saying that is justifiable, just saying they really do hate inbreeds more than they do gays, lesbians, etc.

Civil Rights. I agree with those who say we were the center of civil rights because we caused it. So fvcking what. Our predesessors caused it and helped clean it up. Again, many appologies have been made. Fact of the matter is, discrimination against blacks is way, WAY blown out of proportion, simply because of our history. Again, i'm not saying it doesnt exist, it just isnt as big as a problem as you people make it out to be.

Stupid Alabamians. Oh? Well lets look at this. UAB: Top ten schools in the WORLD to go to to become a heart sergeon among other medical professions. UofA: In the Top 5 Schools in the US to go for for a degree in MIS. Fact: We have one of the fastest growing counties in the US. Why? Because of the outstanding standard of living and schooling. I admit, AL is not high on the public schools list, BUT, that is only because of the truely 'redneck' towns that still exists. That brings down our whole score. If you look, you will find many schools have made it in the top list of publics schools in many magazines; some of which include Vestavia Hills (Bham) and Saint James (Montgomery). If we are so damn stupid, why do we have more than 3 car manufacturing plants, a NASA center, and one of the top growing areas for medical professionals?

On top of that, wtf makes you so smart? Just because you beleifs appear to be more logical to you does not mean you are smarter than people who's beleif's are faith based. I am a devout aetheist, and i have to tell you, there are a quite a few christians who are a LOT smarter than i, despite their beleifs. YOU need to open your mind a little and realize just becaue someone believes something that doesnt seem as believeable to you, doesn't mean you are better.

The problem is, in your close and highly discriminatory mind when you think of Alabamaians, you think of a crazy redneck who likes Nascar, runs around with a rebel flag, and hates blacks and gays. The truth is, this is hardly the case. I would like you to drive around Alabama for a while and tell me how many people fit your sterotype.

I understand where most of your comments are comming from and i dont debate that they are partially founded. But i am trying to tell you that it is not how it used to be and you, along with all the people who sterotype us, should take another look and find out for yourself rather than be influenced by extremists.
It just really pains me to think that AL still has such a bad reputation. I've been to plenty of states and heard lots of good and bad things about them. I've found alomost 90% of the time what I was told was not true...

Argh...end AL rant....

On to gay marriage...
Personally, i think if the state already allows gays to be civially unioned, then who cares if you call it marriage? The only difference is just a stupid word...

I have mixed feelings about the view myself and because I could not find enough backing for either side, I didn't vote on the topic.

Here is the common christian view on it. This is according to my parrents, devout christians, long time alabamians. They dont beleive it is correct or logical for, example, to males to be married. Because if they get amrried they can adopt, they dont believe two males could raise a child the way it needs to be raised, despire the parrents beliefs. They dont believe being gay is a proper lifestyle and they beleive they would be more inclined to raise a homosexual child. There are tons of other things but i can think of them now and they are hard to grasp since i dont understand them...

Again, this is NOT my beleifs, my parrents...mine are completely different.

ahh...end rant...g/f called...getting bitched at -_-
