Because god gave me the freedom of choice.

And I choose not to have gay marriage. Getting married is NOT a right.

So there!

You're infringing upon their right not to be offended by something even though they're not quite sure why they're offended by it. They just know it's yucky, and there oughtta be a law....and stuff.

We They have the right to infringe upon others rights because theyre offended and im attempting to infringe upon their right to do so because im offended? Youre confusing. This creates a very circular logic doesn't it?
I was being sarcastic to make a point. 😉

🙂 Its hard to tell sarcasm from hard core religious fanatics. I dont have enough history in OT to judge it based on your SN yet.

There are financial benefits

isn't that the purpose of the "civil union" ? to give the financial benefits ?

Whats the purpose of calling it something different?

Also civil unions dont provide every benefit marriage does.

Wrong.

Separate issue. Sheep not sentient. Slippery slope.

I think the beastiality issue is way off center.. after all that would infringe upon the sheep's rights not to be abused or something.

why do any non-religious people get married? is there a reason to get married if you don't think it is a sin to live together without marriage?

exactly. people always say, "what business do u have saying they can't get married", but i say "what business do they have getting married in the first place?" give them their unions or whatever and be done with it. if they want legal status as significant other or whatever, that's fine. but don't come in my church and say "you MUST marry us" just because you want a ceremony and a wedding ring and think its your right to have one.

It's really more an issue of consent, IMHO. I don't know why this even comes up, since it's really a pretty stupid argument.

Your church doesnt have to marry them by the way. They can get married without involving any religion at all. You can go get a liscence and be married by a non-minister.

I think most people get confused when they believe that marriage is a religious thing.

I would let the issue drop for now if they had equal rights in that legal status but the fact is that they do not and some states have went so far as to even ban civil unions.

OK, so maybe I could have done better.

I guess the bottom line is MOST people in this country are STILL against same sex marriage.

Agree or disagree, the people have spoken.

I'm not real happy to have Bush for another four years, but there it is....

The bigamy argument is probably the closest one since you're (presumably) talking about consenting adults.

The bit that cracks me up about that is that it semi-undermines the no-gay-marriage argument since a marriage with one man and several women could produce a mess of babies (marriage being at least partially about procreation being one thing people use to argue against gay marriage). 😛

So if somehow State X voted that women are not allowed to work.... it's OK?

For the 1340981703th time; the opinion of the people doesn't somehow make the law "correct" in an absolute sense. Yes, they voted against it, but there's no concrete reason for this law to be on the books. The people are entitled to their opinions, but their opinions shouldn't necessarily be law.

Can you think of a good reason to disallow it other than you finding it distasteful?

so why is it allowed?

If it is on the books then it is kosher and is law. There's nothing preventing it from being such.

It is up to the state to recognize marriage, the state decided it didn't want same-sex marriage. Why is this so hard to comprehend?

-edit- I can think of a whole bunch of laws I don't like and don't find "correct." But they are laws none the less.

Mind if I ask a couple questions? You don't believe same sex couples should be allowed to marry. How about....

Allowing a single homosexual person to adopt children?
Allowing joint custody of a child by two same sex people?
Allowing a same sex couple to have the same protective benefits that a different sex couple would?
