But then the 1080 would be terrible value like the 980. The 1070 is everything 980Ti and more.

Who forcing NV selling GTX1080 for 700USD?they can sell it of 550 just like GTX980 or for 500USD just like GTX680.Hell they can sell it even for 300USD if they want and still make money.

GTX1080 for 550 will be good value.EVERYONE will be happy, except Nvidia. But who cares what NV want we are customers and we want good prices.

You are not serious are you? NV is a business and will charge as much as they think they can get away with. Even the $1200 Titan isn't the "full" card. High end gamers just have to live with it until AMD shows up.

And really what has AMD done with the 480? It was supposed to be the $200 dream but they seem to have cancelled the $200 version and now the 8GB seems to be going for $250-280. They have literally made it easy for NV to get away with $300 1060.

Indeed (click):

OC model. AMD offers nothing high end and even though Kepler was irritating, well games need to be played.

I felt a little unenthusiastic about my 1070 as well. It's not a bad card but it's just not as interesting as a 1060 or 1080. It doesn't beat Maxwell in performance like the 1080 or beat Maxwell in value like the 1060. It doesn't have amazing OC possibilities that take it to the next level. It's just a card in the middle that matches the current price and performance of the 980ti.

It beats Maxwell in DX12 and equals it in DX11. I don't find that underwhelming.

For the new node its is underwhelming.I dont know how long you are into GPUs, but mine first GPU was TNT2 ULTRA so i know few things how new node jump should looks like.
It should destroy maxwell even under dx11.But you know its cut too much.
Mobile version is REAL GTX1070.

The Titan XP destroys the Titan X. The 1080 destroys the 980. The 1070 destroys the 970. All of these cards beat their predecessors by a far bigger margin than several previous generations.

Wanting the third best card of a new node to destroy the best card of last gen is asking for too much.

Can you claim an AMD generation that destroys the previous generation?

Talk about the post 8800GTX era only. We have not experienced such a leap since.

While the 1070 is very good I find the 1080 to be the true 1440p card. I don't like the performance in most games I'm interested in, albeit its much better than my current card.

People seem to forget how heavy the Witcher III is. It may not have the fanciest AA or textures but everything else piled on will bring any card down. Disabled Hairworks completely and frames are now around mid 50 ish to locked 60FPS. That was Geralt's hair only, which drained 4-5FPS. Meanwhile in game:

This is with the card out of the box. If you think a 1070 for 1440p is it, it ain't. Buy a 1080 instead. 1200p may be an old arse resolution - until you jack the settings up.

OP - thanks for some real-world/real-life experiences; this has been most helpful. I want to upgrade to 1440p soon, and it seems I should wait for the 1080s to come down in price. 'Grats on the purchase, though! Looks like a winner - and makes WIII look purdy!

Unless NV is purposely retaining inventory, or fixing their entire supply chain (the latter unlikely) - prices are geared to supply and demand. I don't recall having this much drool factor for NV cards in any previous generation that I remember...

$570...

There was a time, it seems long ago, that I could plunk down those dollars and not think twice.

8800 GTX my man

How could I forget? I remember marveling at the speed of my 8800 GT (and the temp with the single slot stock cooler!). Were the prices elevated when those cards were released back then?

In Canada they're so expensive. I can pay less for a flagship cell phone outright.

I think its same in every country outside USA.
here in czech republic GTX1070 cost 50% more than GTX970.
This is one of the reasons i call GTX1070 crap becuase its just overpriced

i buy day1 GIGABYTE GTX970 G1 for 9500Czk
Gainward GTX1070 GS cost me 14100Czk thats 50% more.
