OC'd GTX 670 was never, under any circumstances,15% faster than stock GTX 680's.
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_670/31.html

5% faster than reference stock 680's. I see the point you're trying to make but let's not start exaggerating and making stuff up.
Gigabyte GTX670 OC
Stock=GTX680 performance.
OC to 1060Mhz=12%faster than GTX680.
Mine GTX670 was able 1280Mhz core.That was 15% faster than GTX680.
perf_oc.gif

And best thing:Gigabyte GTX670 oc cost only 400USD and after oc it was way faster than GTX680.Imagine GTX1070 cost only 400USD and after OC beat GTX1080 by 15%.
Yep that good was GTX670.

OP, you didn't "give up" you just got a very FAST video card.

Enjoy it. From everything I read, the GTX 1070 is the sweet spot for speed.

All these people getting new cards is making me jelly. EVGA still hasn't announced a shipping date for my card :(

But I got that pre-order! So hopefully this week :D

Ummm, one benchmark doesnt make a case for 15% faster than 680 when 670 is OC...

Try all the games listed...

1070 at 2Ghz still can't max TW3 at 60fps... Yay for Hairworks.
That card is $550 in Europe as well. I'm not biting until AMD shows up. The need to upgrade has become a lot less urgent since I got a freesync monitor.

Won't be long before the 1080 can't hold 60FPS at 1440p. That's just the part and parcel of high resolution gaming. If you don't like turning down the most demanding settings then you should either not be playing at 1440p or go SLI.

People have hit 2ghz boost on STOCK settings. The card in review here isn't even the highest end after market card. If you go for the best overclocked 1070 cards you are more than likely to get stock 1080 performance from max OCing it.

Well i just show you that you dont get GTX1080 performance from hexus review.

Only Evga FTW at 2140Mhz core reach stock GTX1080, but its not 15%faster like GTX670 was

People seem to forget how heavy the Witcher III is. It may not have the fanciest AA or textures but everything else piled on will bring any card down. Disabled Hairworks completely and frames are now around mid 50 ish to locked 60FPS. That was Geralt's hair only, which drained 4-5FPS. Meanwhile in game:

This is with the card out of the box. If you think a 1070 for 1440p is it, it ain't. Buy a 1080 instead. 1200p may be an old arse resolution - until you jack the settings up.

Hairworks is just a resource hog and a poor implementation of hair physics (like most of nvidia's add-ons), I wouldn't waste my time with it, especially when it's so difficult to tell the difference. Congrats on the new card! I'm still waiting on my 1080Ti

The Gigabyte 670 doesn't have an end user overclock in that chart. That's where the 12-15% comes from. Like he said, it's about equal to the stock 680 from the factory.

I never even mentioned 1440p.
Still running 1080p here. Getting in the 50's with foliage visibility range turned down a notch and modded hairworks, freesync takes care of the rest.
Might want to look into a monitor upgrade next. Adaptive sync is a must have, not being tied down to 60Hz prolongs the life of your GPU quite a bit.

While true, HairWorks can be cool if you leave it at 2x antialiasing in TW3, it has almost zero quality loss and with high preset runs at a constant 60FPS in 1080p on my 980 with HBAO+. But I do agree that it is a wasteful implementation. A 1070 should in theory be able to pull 60FPS/Ultra everything in TW3 in 1080p, 1440p becomes really tricky for such a demanding game. IMHO a 1070 is an entry 1440p card while the 1080 is a true 1440p card, and the Titan X(P) is a premium 1440p card. 4K is going to ravage everything at ultra-details especially in upcoming titles.

4K is going to be that carrot on a stick for ultra-enthusiasts, while the rest of us will try to balance it out @1440p in the near future.

I will keep playing 1080p until and unless mid range cards start performing better at 1440p which I don't see happening anytime soon. Resolution is a very demanding aspect of graphical advancement and PC gamers tend to take it for granted. Last gen consoles failed to keep up with 720p gaming and current gen consoles are failing to keep up with 1080p gaming.

Started on Blood and Wine and part of the gardens in the palace absolutely flattened my FPS down to 45 (the opening quest with the hare). Heh, and people say this a 1440p card.

Im sure there maybe extreme OC from users out there, but not where near 12-15% over and above stock 680. Head1985 showed a 15% lead over stock 680 in one game and used this to prove his point.
The OC on the 670 in the chart was enough for his claim, however when all benchmarks shown, there is no 15% perf over the stock 680 period. He didnt state = 680, he siad 15% over!

Some people conveniently forget that the GTX 970 did not in fact beat the 780Ti at launch. It was behind and only with time went ahead. The 1070 already matches the 980Ti at launch so things can only go forward.

GTX 680 was 25% more expensive than the 670. The 1080 is 55% more expensive than the 1070. If someone still tries to compare the 2 situations then they are clearly trolling.

Why are you complaining that a $379 card doesn't perform like a $599 one? If you want more performance, pay more. That's how it is in virtually every industry.
Like i said before its win for NV and very very bad for customers.
4years before you can pay 400USD(GTX670) and you get 15% better performance than GTX680 after OC
Today you pay 450USD(1070) and you cant even reach GTX1080 stock. You need pay 700USD for 1080.
Why you even defending NV?ITS BIG LOSE to all customers.

its even worse because NV have "true" GTX1070 but they only sell it in mobile version. They just laugh into Our face with this.

So why are you then targeting the 1070 as a bad card? You should be saying that the GPU industry is giving worse value as a whole right now.

The 1070 is giving phenomenal value right now relative to all other cards in the market. And that's all that matters for the particular card.

It is really shady how they cut out 128 shaders from the desktop version (pun intended), it makes the deskop part look incomplete with 2048 shaders it would have gained some nice performance boost, making it stand out from the 980Ti.
