**GASP** Dell... Opteron... **OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED**

Whatever rocks your boat. Seeing the official Major League baseball site posting Alex Rodriguez Boston Red Sox jerseys for sale before the trade eventually collapsed was rather amusing, I don't see the same humor or twist of irony over this.

Dell selling a few Opterons on the side isn't going to have any financial effect on AMD. They're probably not even getting the CPU's straight from AMD.

It's just something cool too see. Nothing more. Don't be such a spoil sport 😛
Agreed. Let us have our fun!

None of the links work now (except for Brandon's), so could somebody please say what the other links lead to? I assume they were for single opteron and athlon CPUs, but I'm curious to know which ones.
Well, I saw an Opteron 848, an XP 3200+ barton, and a shuttle PC or motherboard of something in addition to NFS4's links.

A lot of people see humor/intrigue in this. Nothing more.

Dell has been pretty adamant against selling AMD systems for YEARS. Then all of a sudden two AMD processors show up on a site that has been INTEL-ONLY forever. Then to see two Linux variants for AMD64 as well in the same day.

It'd be like Honda announcing a V8 engine for their Acura line. It's just something you don't expect.

You don't have to get all pyscological about how/why Dell is doing this, it's just surprising to see.

Not to be too picky NSF4 but the Acura is owned by Honda so it happens all the time that Honda anounces new engines for Acura.
And I find nothing strange for those announcements (not that Honda sometimes doesn't design/build engines for "big three" from time to time but that is a whole different story).

Long time H'er Mark Reyes, called Dell today and here is his account of the conversation.

I called up Dell, gave them the part Number for the Opteron, and they told me yes they do sell it. I didn't say what the product was, just gave the part number and asked if he could give me a description of the part Number, and he said "AMD Opteron."

So we called up Dell ourselves to order an AthlonXP 3200+. A very congenial gentleman by the name of Dan verified the AthlonXP part number of A0297792. He was also kind enough to verify that Dell had 420 units of the 3200+ in stock. He verified our account with Dell, as we have and active account with them, and then put us on a long hold.

As we waited, we surely thought that we were about to be informed that we could not purchase this item. Lo and behold, Dan came back to the line to inform us that after researching the item that the AthlonXP 3200+ had in fact been "deactivated." I am sure we will live to buy another day. And boy was that 3200+ from Dell going to make a great give-away...

So is Dell poised to start selling AMD CPUs? Certainly there has been no official announcement, but you have to wonder why Dell would have 420 AthlonXPs in stock if they were not going to try to sell them.

You picked on the wrong person there bud😉 You TOTALLY missed the point of the post

(1) I know that Honda owns Acura.
(2) Honda is a company that prides itself on the environment and fuel efficiency, etc.
(3) Honda has stated MANY times that it will NOT build a larger RWD sedan chassis or a V8 engine
(4) Honda's management is staunchly AGAINST building a V8 engine.

So Honda/Acura announcing a V8 engine would be a BIG shock to the system to everyone in the auto industry.

So if one of "the big three" (or shall I say big two since Toyota went ahead of the Daimler-Chrysler) approaches Honda and asks them to build V8 engine for them Honda will refuse? - I seriously doubt that this will happen (regardless of any publicity).
Plus an engine being V8 desn't mean that it can not be economically designed V8 (versus current V8 ones).

And obviously Honda can build V8 engines:

Are you surprised now NSF4 😉?

(1) Honda doesn't have the resources, capacity, or funds to build a [production] V8 engine.
(2) Honda DOES however provide it's 3.5 liter SOHC V6 engine to GM for the Saturn Vue sport-ute
(3) Of course you can build an economical V8. That's beside the point. Honda just refuses to build one for its Acura lineup.
(4) GM and Ford don't need Honda to design a V8 for them. They make some of the best V8's in the industry (Vortec, LS1, Triton, etc.).

Whether GM or Ford will ask a Honda to build such engine - I doubt that either (it will be stupid to pay to competitor that doesn't compete in this niche for the moment) but it was a theoretical situation and my point was that money talks regardless of what the press statements are.
Also aren't "most likely" and "NEVER" antonyms?
Especially with all the rumors that NSX may actually bring V8 here in USA (may be as a limited import but still).

The NSX won't get a V8 engine.

but, none of the links work for the products

B/C of my analogy saying that Dell selling AMD processors would be like Honda making a V8 engine for its passenger sedans.

Lets stop with the analogy and start the bitching !

Hehe, we could mass email dell asking for AMD processor line products 😉

It's probably a tactic used by AMD shareholders that works at Dell to falsely make news to boost AMD's stock prices up, and then say it was a mistake.

Intel can't claim 64 bit support out of a processor and still have the price still geared towards the mass market. Seems to me that AMD struck it big with all the K8s have to offer, server side and for your average user. Uneducated ppl might not know that the lower clocked AMDs are on par with the higher clocked P4s, but they also don't know you don't need 64 bit cpus just yet, nor will it do much for them if they don't know how to take advantage of it.

I wonder if this violates their agreement with Intel...

As long as they aren't building with it I wouldn't think so. If they can succeed as a retailer for the processors individually that still gives them a little bit of income. And if it goes well they just might build servers with it.

That would be a kick in the face to Intel wouldn't it?

Dell: "We're going to start building a line of servers based on the Opteron CPU."
Intel: "You realize if you do that we won't give you such a great deal on Intel CPU's anymore."
Dell: "Ok, that's fine. Oh before I forget, could you cancel all future shipments of Xeon processors?"

Maybe this part of the change due to Michael Dell stepping down as CEO? I don't believe that AMD could put up with the demand/time table that Intell can where Dell is concerned, since they pretty much have a 7 day supply of hardware available at any given time.

I thought that was pretty logical really.

AMD have the lions share of gamers, why wouldnt Dell, get in on the action.
