gas is not going to hit 500, 1K a gallon/barrel/whatever, sorry.

I'm saying there's no country in the world rich enough to pay the prices the US can pay for oil.
You think any oil will go to china or india if the US will pay more?!
HAH!
The US will be the last country on the planet to run out of oil.

$2.10/gal for 10% ethanol blend in Des Moines. A few cents higher for regular unleaded. That's a six cent jump overnight. It's the highest I've ever seen it here (except for a couple of profiteers on 9/11, lasted less than a day IIRC).

Actually it was a $.10 jump overnight but it was last Thursday IIRC. It was 1.99 last week until the jump and has been 2.099 all weekend. It should drop wednesday here though(late tuesday) as that seems to be how things trend here.

CsG
Do you have to disagree with everything? Maybe that's what happened in Ankeny. but around here it jumped a nickel from 1.99.9 to 2.04.9, fell to 2.03.9 (or even 2.02.9 at one downtown station), then jumped again six cents to 2.09.9 (current price). Some stations in Ames are 2.10.9 today.

I don't know about Perry or Indianola or Newton. I've found prices well outside the metro are often several cents different from Des Moines, sometimes higher, sometimes lower. Metro prices are usually within a couple of cents of each other.

 Get a grip Bowfinger - I was correcting/amending your information. I happen to work in Des Moines - I see the gas prices every damn day. It jumped $.10 and was $2.09 over the weekend.

CsG
Never, ever, ever ... about anything.

(I'll take the rest to PM. This is absurd.)

Agreed, alternatives become feasible far before that point.

No country in this world is EVER going to run out of oil. You're using faulty logic or bad science if you think so. The worst that will ever happen is that it will become harder to find and extract, and thus the cost will go up (that is NOT what is happening now). As it is, there are currently more oil reserves in the Alberta tar sands than all the oil that has ever been extracted in the entire history of the oil industry. Great news for Canada except that currently the cost of extraction is very high, but it is very safe to say that that will go down as the technology improves. Bad news for the anti-oil zealots, I guess. The world is full of oil...

How come only 24? Do you have a 6 banger in that thing? My Volks Passat (1.8 Turbo) is getting 32 on the highway (longer the trip the better) and at least 24 in the city.
Now I would like to get a turbo diesel Volks. Look at the numbers on those babies! Sure, they aren't quick, but they get the job done.

You realize that they said that last summer, and the summer before that, and the summer before that, and the summer before that...

No, it seems to be having an effect, at least here in the South where people are pretty poor since wages like 8 hr is top pay.

Less traffic on the roads and parking lots noticebly emptier.

for the poor yes, but for the middleclasses I don't think so :)
They need to stay off the road and drink more beers
Beer is cheaper by the gallons..

oh my bad, beer still cost more then gas! why is everyone complaining?
drinking and driving just doesn't mix know what I mean? but i guess higher gas price won't stop drunk driver from driving unnecessarily.
less people on the road = better for the environment and we don't have to deal with traffics either.

Somethings going on. Notice how "everyone" is getting into the gas business as a sideline? The local major grocery stores are talking away half of their parking lot to add pumps. Walmart, most, have pumps. Soon you'll be able to go to the video rental store, rent a video and fill er up, all in one stop. Mc Donalds? "Will you have a fill-up with those fries sir?"

How bout Louisiana.

They will shut down any station not selling within 12 cents of all stations in the State.

Republicans whining about high gas prices in 2000...San Franciscans recently reporting more than $3 per gallon for regular unleaded
http://www.democraticunderground.com/top10/05/193.html
Now let's take a look at what some of those Republicans had to say in 2000, when gas was around a full dollar cheaper per gallon than it is today:

Rep. Terry Everett: "The Clinton Administration has failed in its duty to develop a policy to deal with our national energy supply and is therefore directly accountable for the higher prices Americans are now paying at the gas pumps."

Dennis Hastert: "House Speaker Dennis Hastert accused the Clinton administration Friday of misleading members of Congress about the causes of skyrocketing gas prices in the Midwest."

Rep. Wally Herger: "Congressman Wally Herger recently denounced the Clinton-Gore Administration's complacency during the current gas price crisis. 'Northern Californians are being held hostage at the gas pump,' Herger said. 'The Clinton-Gore Administration has demonstrated a complete and total lack of leadership in preventing this problem. It is a clear failure of domestic and foreign policy.'"

Larry Kudlow: "The Clinton-Gore administration?s hapless and incoherent management of foreign policy is nowhere as evident as in their bungling on OPEC?s oil-price hike. ... While crude oil prices could drop to $25 per barrel, they will stay well above the average $20 real price of oil registered over the past ten years. And way above the $10 worldwide average marginal cost of producing new oil. Meanwhile gas prices at the pump are likely to be upwards of $2 per gallon well into the summer."

Glenn Spencer: "In recent weeks, gas prices have surged to their highest level in a decade. Prices for home heating oil and natural gas are expected to rise by about 30 percent this winter. ... With the Clinton-Gore administration's policies largely to blame for the pain being felt by consumers, Vice President Gore's camp has pulled out all the stops to shift blame away from his own administration."

Various Repubs: "Representatives Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Menomonee Falls), Tom Petri (R-Fond du Lac), Paul Ryan (R-Janesville), and Mark Green (R-Green Bay) today blasted Energy Secretary Bill Richardson and the Clinton-Gore Administration for their failure to implement a comprehensive energy policy to deal with staggering gas prices Wisconsin consumers continue to face at the pumps."

So, gas is about 60-75% per gallon more at the pump and oil is about 100% more per barrel than it was when these moaning minnies were whining about how much Bill Clinton and Al Gore sucked, but now George W. Bush is the president - why, his sh!t don't stink. Perhaps they're still waiting for him to "jawbone" OPEC? Either that or they don't care about gas prices now that he's, y'know, got the gays on the run.

BTW,

Average Gas Price at Record $2.29/gal

$2.26 for regular here in Louisiana now.

I should've taken a pic yesterday of Shell Gas station I filled up at yesterday in Norco, Lousiana with the Shell Refinery in the background of the station.

People here have been asking me how come we don't get a discount with the Refineries and the Gas made right here???

My reply is to ask the Oil Minister of Saudi Arabia.

Yes, higher and faster the better

Well, yes and no. Some of us, for no fault of our own, have 80-mile commutes, with fuel-efficient cars, but with no available public transportation or car-pooling opportunities.

Extremely high gas prices will encourage conservation and the development of alternative energy sources, but the effects will take many, many years to be seen.
