OK - lets say I paid $20.

I put in $15.50 worth.

I'm supposed to accept the fact that they keep $4.50 because they don't give out change?
If you only need $15.50 worth of gas, you aren't exactly running on empty, so if you don't like their policy regarding exact change, you probably have enough fuel to get you to another gas station with a different policy.

So if a candy bars costs $1.50 and you give them $2.00, will they give you change for that?

Drrrrrrr I was responding to Humper who seemed to think the arrangement was the gas station says "$30 = X amount of gas" tough luck if you don't get your money's worth.

Because I want to fill up my tank to full. Gas prices fluctuate and the amount in my tank will vary as well. I don't know if a fill up is going to cost me $39.40 or $44.30. So change is to be expected because I can't know the exact amount.

It's HUMPY god-darn-it!

What if the gas station owner doesn't care what you want or what you can't figure out?

I'm not arguing that this is good customer service, in fact it's pretty dickish not to give change.

But... There are 24 hour places that will not give cash as change at certain times. It's either exact change that they put directly into a hole in the floor or you pay with a card of some sort.

It's their prerogative as a store to set the terms of sale.

Yep. It's like that all over NYC now. Separate prices for Cash vs Credit.

The corner gas station near me charges 5¢ more for credit I think. I always use cash, and put in $20 at a time. No point in moving weight I don't have to move.

Well, like I said. I fill up before helping anybody. This way, they know exactly how much gas was used, and they can just fill me up again.

It's actually a good system. Before, I'd just be like - give me $10...but these days that's way too little. Asking for more than $20 seems like a lot, even if you've driven a lot.

Asking them to fill up the amount they used? Perfect, and no hard feelings even if it goes to the $30-40 range.

Boycott any station that wont give change, if enough people do it they might rethink how they do business.

Meh, I hate using cash at prepay gas stations. Thankfully most of the gas stations by me are not prepay.

Just do a rough calculation, and round down so they don't feel they're getting screwed. Miles Driven/MPG*$

Or...they can fill up the exact amount they used?

They could, but you're having an issue with that. My way works 100% of the time, and yours fails 100% of the time. I think I know which method I'd use ;^)

Who cares. Use your debit or credit card, and purchase 1 cent worth of gas at the pump, then get a receipt. Then purchase 1 cent worth of gas, get receipt. 1 cent, receipt. 1 cent, receipt. Make sure you have spare time. (I think they pay a minimum fee per debit or credit transaction.)

Or, when they say inside the store that you can't get change, purchase gasoline $1 at a time. Get receipt each time ("to help me keep track. My gas gauge is broken, so I have no clue how much gas it can take." )

Passive-aggressive solutions ftw. Then, have all your friends do the same thing. Make sure the place gets the message: "we'll keep doing this until you change your policy to something that's fair."

Some gas stations around here only accept debit card, and even when you do that, they charge you a processing fee. Assholes.

But in OP's case, they're suppose to give you cash change for over paying.

Next time when you help someone out, make sure you help them commensurate to the cost of your next fillup. Problem solved!

I really want to know how would you be able to squeeze the pump gun for 1 cent of gas.

it's not that hard. i do it when trying to hit a specific amount.

Read DrP post again. He was saying start and stop at exactly 1 cent, get receipt, then repeat over and over. Not ran the pump for a while, then slow down and tried to hit at a particular amount. Big difference. I really want to know if anyone tried and succeed
with purchasing of 1 cents of gas.

How is it any different than rounding up from lets say $24.99 to $25.00?

See my answer to waggy above.

If you pay for one cent the pump will stop at one cent.

How do you make it stop fast enough though? 1c is only like 6ml, when you go to pay they see how much you put in and will charge you accordingly. Or do some pumps actually let you set an amount? I've seen some older pumps that have buttons for $5 $10 and $20 which is funny by today's standards but back in the day I guess $20 could fill a car.

Either way doing this is going to harm the gas station itself, not the oil industry. The best way to hurt the oil industry is to get an electric car, provided your hydro actually comes from a hydro dam or nuclear and not fossil fuel.

Around here you sometimes have to pay exact amount even before filling up if it's after 10pm. IF its CASH.
