gas mileage

I'm inheriting a '93 Infiniti J30 that gets 20 miles per gallon and I want to know a good way to increase its gas mileage. Someone direct me to a good tuning site for beginners. I've seen stuff on atomizers, spinoffs of superchargers, and reducing the car's weight. Thoughts? Thanks.

Bigger bores, port the head, upgrade the valve train, larger injectors, add a turbo, retard the timing..............................................

Make engine is tunes up, O2 sensor et al is good

Well, from my experience riding in and driving a J30, if you resist the urge to rev the engine to 6k to get power out of it, you'll probably get higher MPG.

Overinflate the tires a little bit and get a wheel alignment, to reduce rolling resistance. Use the thinnest recommended grade of oil.

hahaha...

Incase you haven't figured it out yet, all of those products are garbage and they don't work.

Think about it; auto manufacturers do everything they can to improve their CAFE numbers. Don't you think they'd already be using these devices if it was that easy?

change your air filter
check and regap your spark plugs (change them if needed)
constantly check the air pressure in your tires
make sure that your brake calipers aren't dragging. Usually the rear parking brake's freeze up.
check your PCV valve and replace it if needed

Don't buy into crap like that fuel atomizer and a tornado fuel saver. If it sounds too good to be true, it's a piece of sh*t.

Basically that mileage sounds reasonable for that car. As long as your spark plugs are good, fuel filter good, air filter good, etc. then you've got to live with what you have. If there's nothing plainly wrong about the drivetrain, then there's not much you can do to help gas mileage. The car you're looking at is rated 18/23, so if you're getting 20, that's normal. You can't do anything to increase that.

O2's can, and do significantly affect gas mileage. They work best when new, and slowly become less and less sensitive over time. The average lifespan of O2's is around 60K miles on a properly running car. If the car runs rich or lean, or burns oil, that will cut there lifespan even more.

first congrats on your new inheritance. infiniti's seem to be nice cars. i, myself, own a nissan sentra and i like it.

as for tips, i think everything has been mentioned: correct tire pressure, alignment, change oils, filters, spark plugs, don't drive hard. also, reduce the weight as much as you can. if there are things in the car that you don't need, strip it out.

on the extreme side, i guess you could try an engine swap like some people already mentioned. seems like your car is RWD, so you would have to find something that is RWD and fits into your car... most likely another infiti engine or nissan engine. if you are considering this, look for specs on your car's engine and ask around in car forums if there are other engines that can fit into your car. then, look for prices of engies online... google it, or ask an autoshop or dealer to see if they can locate one for you.

good luck
