Gas guzzler tax and you.

I'm just curious how many of us are driving cars that fall under this regulation. My current car had a nice big fat $1,300 addition to the sticker price because of it. Anyone else get to pay this lovely tax?

Not me, I squeezed by because of AFM. Although I rather would of payed the tax in exchange for a normal cam & lifters. I shut the AFM off in the tune anyway since it's more annoying than anything if you're not driving on a nearly flat road, which doesn't happen around here.

I had it even *with* an analagous feature. No tuning capability on my car yet, but in manual mode it shuts it off (got the auto which is faster in most situations due to less aggressive torque management on the auto on this car for some reason).

Yes and if the .gov had it's way, I'm sure I'd be paying more after my upgrades. I was only digned for $1300 since I got the manual. The auto buyers are hit with a $2600 tax.

So many good choices to save money these days: Prius (regular, V, or C), Ford C-MAX hybrid, TDI Golf/Jetta, Escape 1.6L ecoboost.

Slow, slow, slow, and slow 🙁

For regular everyday/commuting cars though, you're right - plenty of great options now.

I was just thinking the same thing. Amazing to think that there aren't many 4-bangers that are bigger than the blowers on cars. Are you running a 2.4 or 2.8L?

2.6, then don't even make the 2.2 or 2.4 any more.

I'm barely spinning the 2.6 for 17 psi as it is. There are 3.0-4.0L twin screws if you are running E85 or race gas and spinning them to 30 psi. A 2.8L in a 17 psi pump gas car would have a 5" upper pulley poking through the hood and would be spinning so slow it wouldn't "seal" well 😛

I meant 2.3 or 2.9. I know those are popular choices in V community right now.

Must be nice to barely spin it for 17 psi. Mine is probably reaching warp speed at 15psi.

I was probably spinning my M112 at 18,000 RPM just for 14-15 psi, that thing is so tiny. Had a *wicked* scream though that made ME jump in the driver seat at times. Not the same pitch as a TS but way louder.

Yup, quoting from a company that ports Eaton blowers:

"2.76 upper and stock lower @ 6500 rpm, blower rpm is 17899"

And I've burried it into 7K 😛 Not on purpose mind you. I know that blower didn't make any boost past a certain point and hurt power due to the heat and drag.

I have a shift light now 😉

You don't have to drive a super econo box or hybrid to avoid the gas guzzler tax.

Gas Guzzler Tax Schedule from epa.gov

Any vehicle with a "combined" fuel economy of 22.5MPG. The combined number is calculated from the EPA MPG ratings for the vehicle at 55% city and 45% highway mileage. Also,

This tax does not apply to minivans, sport utility vehicles, and pick-up trucks. Congress did not impose a gas guzzler tax on these vehicle types because in 1978, at the time the law was enacted, they represented a relatively small fraction of the overall fleet of passenger vehicles and were used more for business purposes than personal transportation.

I say it is time to change this! Maybe make it tax deductible for those who are able to claim the vehicle for a business expense.

I've outgrown fast cars. I now find more enjoyment from having an economical commuter, and using the money saved to pay off student loans and put towards the mortgage.

In seven years when my mortgage is paid off, I may reconsider.

weird, I thought this was the whole point? To crack down on all those hedonist Americans driving their Escalades and F-350s for ep33n value?

Escalades and F-350s are excluded like all other trucks and SUVs. I get dinged for getting better gas mileage and putting less wear on the road than the pickup next to me.

In fact, that law is a contributing factor to the poularity of SUVs and minivans, as the traditional station wagon was no longer competing on even footing.

Greenie\Leftie: "Yeah but you're a barbarian in your epeen wiener mobile. Nobody needs more than [BEST_CAR_I_CAN_AFFORD_HP - 20] HP."

:awe:

That's all the gas guzzler tax is, another "leveling the playing field and making it fair" welfare tax.
