Smith, a self-proclaimed geopolitical know-it-all hawking his new book Black Gold Stranglehold, says Americans -- tree-hugging politicians and car-addicted commuters alike -- should blame themselves for the coming spike in prices.

If you don't believe the average cost of gas will double in 12 months, Smith points to places such as Hong Kong, Korea and France, where gas prices regularly top the $5 mark.

These two paragraphs show he's a moron and full of sh!t.

I am also hoping he is not comparing the cost of a litre to the cost of a gallon.

Not to mention both have much higher gas taxes than the US.

 you're my only buddy light still on 😀

Cool!

Fsck off and die, buddy!🙂

I love the smell of fear mongering in the morning.

Smells like... panic.

True, there are idiots out there saying gas will hit $2.50 a gallon. Never happen.

I think panic might be a good thing. No one has the brains to do something about it before it happens, so maybe the sensation of their testicles receeding into their abdomen when they realize they might not be able to afford the gas to get to work will motivate them.

A price correction that took the cheapest gas prices in history ($1.00 in 2000) and just more than doubled that, (making it STILL cheaper than gas in 1979 when adjusted for inflation) is NOT the same as increasing it be a factor of 10.

Yes, someday gas will reach $10 a gallon. But not any time soon.

it is 7x more energy efficient to move people and freight by train than by automobile. How come no one is advocating further upgrading and expansion of the rail system?

... You aren't familiar with Europe's high speed train system, are you? It's LESS efficient for passengers, even when fully loaded. Freight is indeed more efficient, but local governments HATE trains because they're noisy and the equipment associated with them is "unsightly". Too much red tape.

You have documentation to back this up?

In reality most places have freight trains passing through constantly...a lot of these have been tracks there since a century ago.

The main problem with rail systems (and many places are trying them) is they have to share tracks and sharing tracks causes a lot of delays. Also you need parking somewhere. All of these requires new land that noone wants to give up with the rising value of real estate.

We have a tri-rail system here, I have used it a lot when I was single, they have a bus/train that takes you to South Beach, Orlando/Disney, etc. I paid $150 for a year pass and used it every weekend. Getting up the state wasn't bad as the route starts about 2 hours away, but taking the train home on monday morning was about 75% getting be back 2-4 hours late, the train starts it's journey southbound around Pennsylvania or further north even. Every stop even if 5 minutes delay adds up.

Most of the problem has to do with many people taking the train are having too because they cannot afford airfare, yet they expect to be treated like royalty and get defiant with the train employees. In West Palm Beach, maybe a half dozen times the train was delayed because police had to forcibly remove someone.

I am all for a better transport system and I believe as we grow in cities and gas gets more expensive along with real estate pushing long commutes to work, you will see more and more of it.

Unfortunately, gas is here to stay for awhile. The process of creating hydrogen is energy inefficient. To produce 1 gallon of hydrogen it would require an oil powerplant to use more than 1 gallon of oil to provide the necessary energy. If hydrogen fuel were to be the next big thing, we would need to create that hydrogen using NUCLEAR power plants, but in this case we woul have more nuclear waste.

what makes this guy an expert?

"Why are they charging higher prices for gas? Because people will pay it. Apparently, we're not changing our driving habits much," he said. "Blame this on ourselves. This country has not built a new refinery in 30 years, we stopped new oil exploration . . . and put a moratorium on offshore drilling."

I agree with this, though.

I don't agree. People are already slowing down with gas over $2.50/gallon. I think over $5/gallon people would stop driving and start finding alternative ways to get to work, because at that price most of your paycheck would go to gas!

I seriouslly hope it does get to $10/gallon. I hope it doesn't get to $10 because of a terror attack, but just by normal pricing means. $10 a gallon would RULE. Just think of how many screwed SUV and pick up truck drivers there would be. AWESOME! Since a overwhelming majority of SUV and truck owners don't need those cars to begin with they are getting what they deserve. All those stupid soccer moms driving cars WAY to big for them handle. Yeah it will cost me $100 to fill up, but I'd gladly pay it to greatly reduce all the useless SUV and truck buying. Oh yeah, and it will reduce all the emissions. And I'm not saying SUV's or pickup trucks are bad. But do most people really need a small tank of a vehicle to go get groceries and pick up their kids from soccer...I think not.

You're an idiot. Truckers will have to pay that too, and the price of everything you buy will go up, then you won't be able to afford your internet connection anymore to post stupid comments like this

three words - pebble bed reactors. cheap and fairly clean electricity, with no dependence on fossil fuels. use the electricity to produce hydrogen or charge your electric car or power your local bullet train/monorail. then, in X number of years, solar/wind/hydro power will be efficient and cheap enough to replace nuclear, and we can finally start to realize true independence from fossil fuels and some forms of pollution.

not saying that is the only solution or that it would be easy, but the technology exists and has been proven to be safe and efficient.
