Gaming with a LCD screen ?

I've always used CRTs and I'm wondering if it's time for me to change ...

I'm mainly using my PC for games like Quake3, which need very fast response time.

I've noticed all the "hype" around those low response LCDs, but it seems that it's sometimes a trade off for contrast quality or luminance etc...

I'm really looking for a good (19") LCD that I can keep several years, and I have no idea what to choose ....

thanks :p

In my opinion LCD monitor refresh rates are still unacceptable for any fast games.

well, not to be argumentative, but ballyhooey on that comment Malladine.

My 2005FPW is superb and give me a far superior gaming experience than my nice 21" CRT I sold a few months back on games like UT2K4, BF2, WoW, etc.

I don't know what kind of gaming you'd get on an el cheapo LCD, but the good ones aren't an impediment to gorgeous gaming.

And how much was that thing? $600? I'm just unwilling to believe there is no ghosting. So i'll take your ballhooey and raise you shenanigans :D

Oh and what's the deal with widescreen? Isn't everything sorta, wide?

Its rather subjective. Opinions vary. Some people love LCDs, other swear by CRTs. Your best bet is to hit the local technophile hangout and have a gander at some LCDs and form your own opinion.

Sorry I couldnt be more helpful.

Call shens all you want, but a decent LCD with a good refresh rate (even 16ms is acceptable) will not ghost. My 2005FPW didn't ghost, and neither do my 2405FPWs, and I spend an exhaustive amount of time on it (gaming and otherwise).

Note that many people got the 2005FPW for a little over 300, and some of us got 2405FPW's for a little over 400.

Yes good read...

My issues with LCD are and maybe this same low ms timings will help but I dont like the look of video..like DVd or my Xvid CSI episodes...DVD only needs 29.97fps and I was running a 25ms (40fps max) monitor with a contrast ratio of 500:1....It is mitsubishi...Whay isn't this good enough???

I also think CAD linework on the LCDS also look like crap. Have a brand new 19" samsung at the office but I perfer the CRT visually...I think the samsung was a rahther good one wit 18ms at least and high contrast ratio.

Is there a problem if you dont use the DVI output and using LCDs??? the mistubishi I have ran on both outputs of my cards, but the office one is using a DVI to analog converter...

I picked my 2005fpw for $335 new from Dell. They are pretty reasonable if you wait for the deals.

As far as ghosting or motion blur, I can honestly say I don't notice any at all and that's after using a CRT for a year. I was pretty apprehensive about switching to an LCD since I game a lot but after using the 2005fpw for awhile I am completely sold.

OP- You can get a 2005fpw or 2001fp for apretty reasonable price if you wait for a deal or buy it used. I'm not too familiar with the 19" models but I've heard the Hyundai L90D+ is a nice 8ms monitor. Widescreen is something to consider also. It will give you a slight advantage in games that support it, which has been almost everyone I've tried.

I agree, I love my 2005FPW. Personally, I would suggest spending a bit more then a 19" to step up to a 20" widescreen. It really all depends on your budget though.

Yeah, going to jump on teh 2005FPW bandwagon, I absolutely love mine. And as they said if you wait for a little while you can get them REALLY cheap for a great monitor. I see now motion blur what so ever when playing HL2, Wow, DS2, CoR, etc.

The 2005 is $550 minimum and the 2405 pretty much twice that. I don't see anything anywhere near $300 and $400.

With the 20% off coupon you can get the 2005fpw for $499.00. If you use your DPA account and your Fatwallet account you can take another $25.00 off. Than with the $60 off E&A and possibly another $35 off coupon (I'm pretty sure that it is stackable with the $60 off coupon) than you're down to either $414 or $379 depending on whether the $35 off works too. I'd say that's a very good price for a high quality 20" LCD.

Same thing with the 2405fpw. I just picked one up for $816 after using the current coupons available.

I don't need to show you. I paid $428 per 2405FPW, and purchased 6.

Generally, the 2405FPW can be had still around $800.

If you can't find good deals, that's your problem, not ours.

I just got a 2405fpw a few days ago and its amazing, I play CS and its not let me down. I dont see any difference over the dell 9300 lcd laptop screen for speed of games or CRTs I am using as well. Plus its amazing for web devel work and the colors are great!

Why are you even concerned about the price of an LCD?

...you're not, you just want to troll.

Why is it that everytime someone askes about LCD's there has to be at least one CRT loyalist that feels the need to bash LCD's? We get they you like CRT's... It has been noted, and no one cares... Move along...

What about LCDs makes games "look nicer" as people say? I mean i have the space for a big monitor (currently I have a mitsubishi 22'' crt) so space isn't much of an issue.... sure a smaller one is always better but i wouldnt really use the space in the back of the monitor on my desk anyway so does it actually look nicer? and I can't understand why/how... anyone care to explain? thanks

yes i realize i must be the 1 billionth person asking this question... so feel free to not answer but please don't flame :)
