I hate all laser mice. The lasers are too strong so if I have to pick up the mouse, the laser will still track. That's why I bought an MX518.

Yeah i used to think that but the G9x dosent have this problem, ive tested its lift off distance vs my MX518 and its the exact same, about 2 CD's. The old intellimouse 1.0 i had before was similar to this, i always considered my mx518 a sturdier version of that mouse.

I was very surprised considering the microsoft HABU laser mouse i tried before continued to track... i dunno i didnt have enough cd's nearby to measure but it mustve been about 8-12 cd's off the ground, ridiculous. People said that mouse was good as well!? Madness...

Hmm I dont seem to have any drift issues with mine. I find it very precise and predictable.

I don't think you understand the issue.

prediction.png

All drawn using my Xai, the top with 0 prediction, the bottom has those settings maxed out, each line drawn as fast as possible.

Each sensor with prediction can have varying degrees of it, and I don't remember the MX518 being as bad as that worst case scenario on the bottom, but I know it has it, I'll have to dig it out of storage to test it properly.

All I know is that I hate it, when I'm making a fine tuned adjustments while playing with a mouse that has prediction I often feel like I'm wrestling with the mouse to get it to do what I want to which can be a very unwelcome hindrance (note the diagonal lines on the bottom set converge as the sensor forces it as it thinks I might be trying to draw a curve when I don't want it).

Not to mention all the buttons are configurable for whatever keystroke you want. I assign the sensitivity buttons to other uses.
While that is true, its still archaic in the sense that just about any other modern gaming mouse has programmable firmware or internal memory for storing changed settings, whereas the MX518 requires the software to be installed in order for it to be reprogrammed and remain functional as such. For instance I can set up my G9x or Xai any way I want and then plug it into any computer I want and it will work as I want it to without installing any software to configure it.

If you liked the copperhead I would go for an MX518.
They're two completely different forms. I know the MX500 shape and weight is more conducive to a finger grip than most right hand palm oriented mice are but its definitely not in the same class as the Copperhead.

You've tried all lasers to know you hate them all?

IME the mice with the worst reputations for lift off distance are the older LED Opticals, certainly not the newer lasers, however just about all my dozen+ mice have identical lift off distances on any of my mousing surfaces (all of them dark, all of them hard ie glass/plastic/aluminum)

There is only one "gaming" mouse I trust, the Logitech MX518. I tried many including many "wireless gaming mouse", this is just best one out there. I love the mouse sensitivity setting on the fly back when I played Halo PC. It makes my pistol killing soooo much easier :awe:

My non-gaming mouse is Microsoft Natural Wireless Laser Mouse 6000. I'm still using the same mouse since 2007 :$

Which of these mice are close to the size of a standard dell mouse? Note I'm just talking about size/shape; not performance (though to be honest I've never had any issues with a dell mouse performance). The x518 looks interesting but from the picture/reviews it seems rather large (perhaps the pictures are not to perspective).

You have seen a g700 sub 40 dollars? :S

Not yet. The x8 and g700 retail around the same price tho (80ish) and I've seen the x8 on sale several times for around 40. I bought it new for $35 on ebay. So when/if I see the logi under similar circumstances I'll probably bite.

my razer copperhead is dying and i need to upgrade, any suggestions?

My last mouse purchase I bought and returned many of the big name gaming mice before settling on the Razer Lachesis.

I saw one person mention the ergonomics of it but its basically the shape of an OEM mouse but with the corners flipped up, so its a pretty common shape.

Some of the other mice I tried continued to track after I lifted the mouse off the surface, which to me made them useless, the Lachesis doesnt do this. As soon as you lift the Lachesis your cursor stops moving.

Next big advantage is having 7 fully programmable buttons. Theres actually 9 but 2 arnt really usable theyre there because the mouse is meant to be used right or left handed.

This is one area I never really looked into. I've been using my beloved MX310 for many years now....and it's my favorite mouse (as far as shape).

So my question is:
How does a high DPI mouse like MX510 benefit me (another words: justify me spending $30-40 on one)

I just got in a sidewinder x3. I've been using a copperhead for a long time and I got this one because it looks to be a similar size and shape and it's ambidextrous (I'm left handed) like the copperhead. I've only played with it a bit hooked up to the computer here at work, but it fits in my hand similarly to the copperhead and seems pretty smooth and precise. It also has similar specs to the copperhead, being a 2000 max dpi laser mouse with on-the-fly dpi adjustment buttons. Amazon has them for ~$30 right now.

A couple of pics for comparison:

The G700 is good and is my current mouse. It replaced my wireless Logitech G7 (the wireless version of the G5, very similar to the MX518). The G700 is heavier and I haven't quite adjusted to the feel yet, but it's a pretty feature-rich mouse. I got it for around $60 when Newegg was doing an all-day Logitech special.

I have a Razer diamondback 3g. I was expecting a lot of liftoff but it's not been too bad. I don't know if it was worth the extra money over my old $7 logitech optical.

+1 for MX518. It just feels right and the thumb buttons are very comfortably placed for me.

Steelseries Ikari. Best mouse I've ever used. And I've had them all from Logitech and Razer.

Go to a store and figure out what fits in your hand the best. Everyone has their own preference, but when it comes down to it, it's what's most comfortable for you to use for hours on end.

This, fitting to my hand is the most important part of a mouse for me.

Have gone from MX518, G7 and now G9. Each has been better than prior. Probably go to the G700 for my next mouse.

I hear this a lot but I can't go back to wired mice. And frankly there's zero reason for me to do so for tracking reasons. Maybe, maybe, when I was playing UT every day there might have been some slight improvement in reaction for a wired mouse, but I haven't done multiplayer shooting in a long time, and no rpg or single player first/third person shooter requires whatever microscopic tracking accuracy wired might provide over wireless.

Same, i just can't stand the wire on a mouse anymore. I have the logitech g700 and love it, by far the best mouse I have owned.

The Ikari has the best shape I've ever used, it's the most comfortable mouse in my opinion. It's really not that hard to make sure the wire doesn't tug. Just secure the wire behind your desk with something, and leave lot's of slack in front of the mouse and it pretty much feels wireless.

I love the G700, but I only use it in wired mode. It just feels like expensive hardware in the hand, and my hand demands luxury.

Really the g700 worked great wireless in games. But on the desktop it was extremely jittery due to power saving features on the mouse.

I never noticed any lag or jitter when it was in gaming mode though.
