The LCD question seems like it is asked every other day. There are tons and tons of posts to read here and in other places. Especially that one with like 20 pages just on the Dell 2001FP.

I'll be getting a nice check close to a $1000 soon and I would love to jump at the bit to get an LCD.

The Dell is a 20 inch display while most the other good LCDs are 19 inches. Does that extra inch make that big a difference?

FYI, I use 17 LCD and regular monitors at work and 19inch flat screen at home for comparison sakes.

It's not the extra inch that makes the big difference. It's the difference in resolution. 1280x1024 vs 1600x1200 is a big difference.

?? Interpolation is like free AA! it won't look as good, it will look BETTER!

do you really think you'll be able to game at 1600x1200? I think HL2 and D3 will bring everything back down to the 1024x768 or at best 1280x1024/960 level.

I have a Samsung 191t (19 inch), Neuvo F419 (19 inch) and a Samsung 213t (21.3) which is just great.

Samsung 213T, a high ticket item and worth every penny.

Or you could just do 800x600 /w AA. Also, the dell has the option to run games in their native resultion /w black borders.

With the new gen cards like 6800 Ultra and X800XT, 1600x1200 gaming is now a reality.

My laptop runs natively at 1600x1200 and I guess it means nothing to me. I never run 1600x1200 on my main gaming rig because I'd rather have the extra FPS at a lower resolution.

Maybe on older games...but we haven't seen the newest generation of DX9 games.

I'd really like to see someone run Far Cry at 1600x1200 and break the 60 fps barrier consistently.

D3 and HL2 will probably be even more intense.

definitely - that's my major concern. but if scaling doesn't make it look much different, that is a great selling point. :)

I would wait for the Apple Cinema Displays. They're widescreen, have a 12ms response time, and the trademark Apple industrial design. They're not much more than the Samsung, especially if you can get a student discount. I just wish I had that kind of money to drop on a monitor.

Just so that you know it's been widely rumoured that LCD prices are going to crash over the next year.

Close enough. :)

The point is they are lower than 25ms which makes them the fastest available at that size AFAIK.

Well, finally got an LCD!

Went with the Samsung 213T.

Very nice monitor, actually more desktop space than I need.

The only thing I'm having problems with is ghosting in games... specifically Battlefield 1942. I'll be playing with in-game resolution later tonite. I tried it at 1600x1200 which is what I was using on my old 19" CRT (which worked fine), and it was pretty blurry. Running a 128MB 9800 Pro by the way... maybe a vidcard upgrade is needed? I have been looking at the 6800GT.

Set up my 2001FP this evening. Watched some DVDs, played some FPSes, and did some coding. This monitor is amazing. No dead pixels, white corner, or screendoor. Totally in love.

You're FPS junkie and you chose 25ms LCD? If it's blurry for you at native resolution, it's going to be worse at non-native res.

Yeah, looks like this one is going back for full credit (gotta love Fry's) and if the Deal 2001FP deal is still around tomorrow, I'll be ordering that one.

I have a 213T and it is quite slow and shows ghost trailing noticeably in games and movies. Honestly, it looks more like a 40ms display.

I also have a 243T which is rated identically, yet it is much quicker in actual use. It has nowhere near the ghosting as the 213T.

Like loudspeakers, you really have to take them home and try them out! You cannot shop on specification alone.

Cheers!

And? I can only say 213T is whole lot better. Brighter, Crispier, Better Design, Wall-mountable (not sure if the Dell could be mounted but I mounted my 213T) :D
Ghosting could be subjective to individuals, but I haven't noticed any on my 213T. I coupled my 213T with 9800Pro, and I max everything in in-game settings, but don't bother with AA/AF. (No problem playing WarCraft, Prince of Persia, FarCry, whatever.)

I have seen sentiments like this a few times, and have to throw in my own experience as a counter. I have both a phillips brilliance 201P (21" CRT) and a dell 2001FP.

The ghosting with the dell ( using DVI btw ) is extremely obvious. Comments about subjectivity etc are usually fair enough, but even with a 16ms refresh panel, in a first person game if you turn around, any text becomes instantly illegible and all the models become blurry. This is particularly obvious in online games, which typically have floating name tags over other players. When you are turning these are completely unreadable - while this could possibly be my eyesight, I haven't found anyone who *can* read them while turning, and would be interested in any insight by people who can, particularly with a 25ms refresh panel like the 213T. I'm not talking about snap 180 turns or anything like that here - just a relatively slow turn in place that takes about 3 seconds to do a 360.

Is there something wrong with my configuration, or is it that people who say that ghosting is unnoticeable are looking at different things ?

Regarding scaling on this monitor:

Scaling is obvious when viewing fine test at non native resolutions.
You would need to have your nose 6" off the screen and a magnifing glass to see it while gaming.
Maybe some people play like that!

i'd say wait a while longer for better monitors, for every one person that says that their top of the line new lcd has absolutely no ghosting, you'll see several others that say it does and they can't stand it, i think it has a lot to do with the eyes you were born with, everyone's eyes are a little different.

i've been holding out on an LCD for this exact reason, every LCD i've ever seen (and i come across quite a few of them at work) hasn't been "up to snuff" for my eyes.

i'm guessing that if the 213T was ghosting very obviously to you, then the 2001fp will be much less, but "much less" is far from good enough for me personally.

your money/choice though.

Agreed. If you're FPS junkie, you should really use CRT.
