From personal experience, if you're somewhere in between preorders 1-5, you should be good to go. After that, it's gonna be a toss up.

Preordering a PS3 = Playing Russian Roulette
I would guess the only way you can guarentee a PS3 is if your crazy enough to sit in a line 2 - 3 days before they are released.

and then you gotta deal with, the higher number you are.. what type of unit is it, the premium or non-premium? did they get 5 premiums and no non-premiums, or only 3 premiums, leaving the remaining 2 with a choice of taking a non-premium, or giving up the offer to people in the list after them. however, i think it is supposed to be handled then that the next premiums that the store gets, if the remaining 2 who previously passed up non-premiums want premiums, they got first dibs.

Gamestop/EB is the only chain that is working directly with Sony for allocation numbers. They will be getting what is ordered, not a mixed bag like the 360 did. Everyone that ordered a 60gig will get the 60gig. They didn't want to repeat the 360 debacle and have done a pretty good job lining everything up the last couple weeks.

But they are still covering the rear-ends by saying that the pre-order is not guaranteed. When the EB Manager told me that this morning I gave him a puzzled look like, "I'm first in line for the pre-order...you better get zero units in for me not to get one."

Expected demand? Who knows. They're expecting to ship 2 million units worldwide (1 million to N. America) for the launch, and I'm pretty confident they'll be able to hit that considering they've been building them for months.

An EB Games store screwed me over for the 360 preorder last year. I was told I was in the Top 5 when I pre-ordered mine. Called a couple of days before launch to confirm where I was and they said Top 5 again. Go to pick mine up on launch day and they say that I'm #18 or something like that and that I wouldn't be getting one. Both my wife and I were calling EB/GameStop corporate all day. One of the store employees accidently let it slip that the manager of the store got one even though employees weren't supposed to be able to (per a District Manager I spoke with). He got a call from corporate and called us back and was VERY apologetic. They magically found an extra 360 for me two days later.
I've learned to be very distrustful of EB Games/GameStop.![]()
