Some good ones on here that are already mentioned. Megaman 2 is an interesting one for the reasons listed. The franchise probably would have simply died after the first game if the development team from the first game didn't work on the sequel in their spare time while working on other projects. Its understandable why the first game didn't get things going, I remember renting it back in the 80s. I did a double take on the box art, not sure I had actually rented the correct game. The box art was so awful its a wonder it sold at all. The game had no codes which made it insanely hard. It still had the guys of a megaman game but it hadn't quite found its footing yet.

Thief II shed some of the sillier elements from the first game.

I never played it much since I didn't own it but Syndicate Wars looked to be in every way an improvement upon its predecessor.

This is a mixed bag for me but I'm glad there was a Dungeon Keeper II sequel. The lack of growing sprites, a monster mix that had to many humanoid characters, changed in game narrator voice and the new rooms of dubious usefulness were all changes that I mostly didn't care for. But the improvements to the workshop and available traps were so great they actually make up for its deficiencies as a sequel. The workshop felt like an important element in the first game that just didn't get there but in the sequel the possibilities were great.

How about Dark Forces II? If you can get over Jedi training being simply finding a light saber in a garage that was a great game.

And then Jedi Knight 2 was similarly awesome. I remember being amazed at how they pulled of light saber fights.

This is funny because I listed Syndicate Wars in the other thread as a sequel that ruined the franchise.

Bioshock.

I actually like both games a lot.

and, while its not a direct sequel, I am eagerly awaiting for Bioshock: Infinite.

Assassins Creed. The first one I liked but it had a lot of issues, the second was better in every possible way, but now they pump them out every year and created and destroyed a great franchise in one generation of systems.

Because I mentioned it in the other thread as well...

Mass Effect. ME2 was so great. Now if the ME2 sequel had just been cancelled instead of turned into crap, we'd all have been happier.

I will be glad when Evil Genius gets a sequel that has been on the fence for many years.

Just Cause is a good call.

AoE is a bit debatable because the original was so good, but a case can be made.

But Trine? Sure, the sequel was very good, but the original was good enough that I don't see it as really advancing that much. There are plenty like that.

When you bring up the Trine franchise, you're going to hear 'ya, Trine was great', not 'ya, Trine 2 was great' ignoring Trine.

For comparison, you're always going to hear 'HoMM 2/3/whatever' and pretty much never 'the first HoMM' (much less King's Bounty).
Fire up an internet multiplayer game with me in Trine 1..won't happen... local coop only

Playing Trine 2 with 2 of my friends was a blast. We're too old to be dragging our PC's across town for any LAN gaming. We actually all bought the first trine thinking we could all play together and were disappointed we could not. That is my case for Trine 2.

There was a November 2012 announcement that the schedule for the next evil ruler has slipped to 2016. But there's a preview at CPAC this week.

There is a kickstarter for it, but you only start to get anything for donating at about the $500,000 tier.

Resident Evil ==> Resident Evil 2
HL ==> HL2
Parasite Eve ==> Parasite Eve 2
Sim City ==> Sim City 2000
Medieval Total War ==> Rome Total War

I name those, because I never played the originals but I player their sequels . RE2 was the first game I really played to any great length.

Yeah, I saw that actually. I admit I didn't get to play those games much so your opinion may well be more valid than mine. I thought the story was cool and the graphics were nice for the time. Why do you feel the game was worse than the original. But I think we can all agree the recent Syndicate game which was just another flavor of the week FPS did nothing to revive the franchise.

I really can't answer this one in great detail. I remember playing the original for countless hours, and really enjoying it. I just remember having lots of technical issues with Syndicate Wars, and never really getting into it.

Jagged Alliance
Gothic
Hidden & Dangerous
Myst
Death to Spies
System Shock
Splinter Cell

All of those spawned sequels which I enjoyed more than the originals, although a couple also dropped well below the originals later in the series. :\
