I have played a number of computer games, the last being CoD. I realize that no game is going to avoid killing, but I don't enjoy when that is all that a game is about. CoD was so simple, that the only time that I had to resort to a walkthrough, was in the first Russian level on the boats, because I never considered simply crouching, when none of the other keys worked.

I like a game with a bit of a puzzle aspect, where it is a challenge to finish the game without using a walkthrough. Some of you might laugh, but the only ones that I have found, were the old Tomb Raider games, because I tend to play without reading the directions, and experiment until I find something that works.

I can't afford to simply buy every game available, so I'm wondering if anyone might make a suggestion as to what might meet my preferences.
 
Deus Ex is still worth playing, and for that matter System Shock 2, although I don't know whether you've tried them. I don't like referring to FAQs, and rarely ever have.

If I reach a point where I'm about to quit playing an otherwise fun game because I'm bored of trying "one more time" to figure out what it is that I missed, I will look it up, but as I said that's seldom.

Thanks for the suggestions. I Googled for both of them, and it still didn't answer my question, as to whether they have a puzzle aspect. I enjoy good graphics and story as much as anyone, but is there more to them?
 
They both have a "puzzle" aspect. The missions aren't centered around clearing levels, you have to invest your skill points and rare items wisely, and it's possible (with enough trickery) to beat Deus Ex without firing a shot.
 
Fallout 1/2, definitely one of the greatest games of all time.

And something like Jagged Alliance or Silent Storm can keep you occupied, I'm sure.

As far as FPS' go, I think that SWAT4 might be right up your alley especially since they randomly place the perps and potential hostages could also be the suspects . . ..

Thief...that's one that I haven't played in a while. But then, I only played the first version. Not a bad game, but not too puzzling.

HL2 - Ch1 had a lot of *puzzles*

i think *darwinia* is all puzzles [weird retro game i have that i haven't investigated]

there was a lot of *figuring* in KotOR series ... NWN2 ... also ... but you *kill*

MDK2 had tons of puzzles ...


Thief is heavy on the stealth and some people play with the *restriction* to kill no one [except the bosses, i guess] ... Dark Shadows is impressive graphically - compared to the first two ... light on the puzzles, however

The ones in this were a bit of a mixed bag. Kurt's puzzles mostly just involved shooting lockballs in some form or another, which got very repetitive later in the game, but Max and Hawkins had far better ones. (the bomb disabling puzzles for Hawkins were a brilliant concept 😀)

that's what i remember ... the game was both *brilliant and *stupid*

overall - even though i HATE *puzzles*

i guess that's MDK2's *saving grace*

the *violence* is *cartoon* ... it's an OLD game ... i played it on my Rage Fury32 ... groundbreaking GFX ... then
 
I don't play many puzzle games, but one that was fairly original was Ghost Master.

Vampire Bloodlines was an interesting game though it's more a RPG than puzzle game.

Another one of my favorites was American Mcgee's Alice.

One that I haven't played that looks like it might be interesting is Roboblitz.

I'm interested in all of the games mentioned, but Project Eden sounds particularly interesting...perhaps because of the ties to Tomb Raider, although it doesn't sound a bit like it.

I started to buy it, but it requires registering an account, and I saw nothing about a privacy policy. The last time that I contacted a site such as this, I started getting alot of spam. It also sounded as though a CC would be required, but I only buy with checks or money orders. It did not appear that it would be available in a local store, but I'll look for it.

I simply do not want killing to be the primary objective of the game. As far as the latter items, I know what an RPG is, but the only thing that FPS suggests is frames per second, which I'm certain is not what you meant. Hybrid...is that like action/adventure?

I just scanned through CompUSA's game pages and I only found a couple of the games mentioned. Beyond my taste, I'm also concerned about some of the newer ones playing properly on my machine, because I have seen threads that suggested that these are more demanding.

deus ex has some puzzle elements, and most are solved based on how you develop a character... ie, there's a door you need to get through - do you lockpick it, talk around and try and find a keycard, or blow it open with explosives? if you're the stealthy man, lockpick is the way to go.. the diplomat talks, and the tank blows stuff up and asks questions later 😉

it's easily the best FPS ever

Thanks for the link. I checked their payment options, and it included what I want, but everytime that I tried to actually checkout, it only offered to use a CC, bank account information or a purchase order. It always said that the vender that the item was coming from didn't accept money orders or checks. I sent an email to Amazon about this, but I doubt that it will do any good.

besides frames per second FPS is also First Person Shooter ... like Doom type games ... and also tend to include games that are played in the 3rd person [thief]

RPGs are role-playing games that would include a wide variety - D&D [dungeon & Dragons] type games - with Turn-based- fighting -like KotOR and NWN to more action oriented games like Gothic 3 with Real time fighting.

Hybrids are games like Oblivion which are Action-adventure FPS games with RPG elements.

DeusEx also is a 'recommended' hybrid ... mostly action FPS with RPG elements [meaning you *choose* what skills, weapons, etc you want to SPECIALIZE in ... you could approach DeusEx from a *stealthy* approach ... and not kill anyone -- or go in with guns blazin' ... or combine both approaches.

DeusEx-DS is very different from the original ... but worth playing [and much nicer gfx]

Thief is also like DE games in a medieval fantasy setting with more emphasis on stealth.

your *puzzle* is to figure out the many NPC's *patterns & AI* and get *around* them ... very engrossing if you love *details*

also the emphasis is NOT on killing

That's because most of the games mentioned have been older games, they may be harder to find, but should play better on your system. Look around for them, especially in the bargain section, or wherever you find used games.

Another one I just thought of was Syberia, it was suppose to be a good adventure game with lots of puzzles. I heard the sequel had less puzzles. Once again this game is a few years old and may not be available at most places.
 
I ordered a copy of Project Eden online, but I'm going to look in a local game store to see what I can find otherwise. I've never been to that store before, so it may or may not have what I want.
 
If you know of some old games that interest you, why not post a "WTB" thread in our fs/ft forum here listing them? I know that I for one have lots of old games that I'm not exactly on the verge of selling, but consider selling when someone posts a need for them at a reasonable offer.
