A lot what people are describing as good AI seems more like 'hard AI'. Its very easy to write AI that is difficult to kill, as mentioned by some one else, just make it head shot you constantly or know things that a human couldn't possibly know.

Quake 3, final boss, hardest difficulty.

You can run onto a jump platform and get airborne at serious speed while the AI does the same thing, and he will headshot you EVERY time. Not even on the hardest difficulty all I could do was try to not die until he came over to my side of the map and put a railgun round between my eyes.

I didn't know that Quake 3 had a single player game. I had Quake 3 Arena in College, but I didn't know that a single player campaign existed. What was it about? (I have only played the original Quake campaign, which didn't really have a story to it)

X-Com night missions. Two enemies I fear:
-The floating disc that has 360 degree field of vision and blows up when it's killed.
-The brain jellyfish that turns your soldier into another brain jellyfish. You do the math.

Agreed, a good AI doesn't mean they gun you down from far away. You can't forget that the computer knows where you are. I forget which developer said it, but it makes a lot of sense in this discussion, "It's harder to make the computer miss," or something like that.

Arma's AI is by far the king of cheaters, but still is my favorite game to-date with the exception of OFP :)

I remember the AI on Starcraft, the day it was released, was pretty brutal.

Someone made a good point about some GTA3 missions. Trying vigilante missions against people in sports cars when you were low on time were just impossible.

The arcade AI on Mortal Kombat 2 and 3 was just irritating. They perfectly mimicked your moves until they were able to pounce on you, or you exploited the tiny holes in the AI.
