Games where the AI is just too good

FEAR had some good AI in certain areas and horrid AI in others. I never figured out why or how that worked.
Both KOTOR games had really simple AI's but some of the bosses were ultra powerful. Especially the ones who would chain force powers effectively. If you didnt have the Force Protect power you could end up in a lot of pain and never touch your opponent.

The best AI's I've seen are often in turn based games. It seems like it RTS's and shooters the computer cant possibly make good decisions fast enough, not like a human.
But turn based games put you on an even playing field time-wise, and the computer has the advantage of making complex decisions thoroughly and quickly. Chess is the best example of this, but also some of the better war games and certain fantasy games like Disciples 2 and Warlords.
Galactic Civilizations 2 is a prime example. On the harder settings the enemy does a great job of building an empire, a fleet and research. Not to mention its hard to sneak up on them.

The trouble with the Insane setting in WC3 is that they don't behave like game players. They don't have to scout, can micro like a fiend, can target your hero when appropriate, and avoid fights the instant they know they can't win.

The final boss in KOTOR 2 was ridiculously hard.

Depended on the type of Jedi you were, my first play through I laughed how stupidly easy they were, second time around with a different build they schooled me for a while until I got it down(I had my old save games and checked it out, yep, was still real easy with my first character).

Yeah I did it first time through as a Consular.....nuff said. The battle contained alot of running around like an idiot trying to get out of range of them so i could take them 1 on 1.

Stalker AI is pretty good.
I was playing last night and thought I had everyone dead or predicted where they were.
The guy came around behind me and climbed the stairs out onto the roof and shot me in the back.

My only issue with COH is it cheats.
It shoots through buildings and walls that it should not be able to.
The mission with the vx rockets is really bad for this.
They actually shoot through the roof in that one.

Quake 3, final boss, hardest difficulty.

You can run onto a jump platform and get airborne at serious speed while the AI does the same thing, and he will headshot you EVERY time. Not even on the hardest difficulty all I could do was try to not die until he came over to my side of the map and put a railgun round between my eyes.

I'm not pro at FPS shooters, but I can pwn that bald guy.

The most "human" AI I've ever played against was the Unreal Tournament series bots.

There are a lot of hard ones, but it's usually just due to cheater programming.

STALKER has moments of brilliance tempered by moments of retardedness. Same for FEAR.

Agreed. Try it on expert. I had to kinda cheat the game for St Fromond. Took the square (which basically consisted of me blasting the shit out of it with the calliope/mortars), heavily fortified it and then I took the point to trigger the counter attack.

My team's AI is borderline retarded which makes the enemies AI good. I guess that balances them out.

Oh and if it hasn't been said enough, enemies that spawn rather prepopulate before an area loads sucks... hardcore.

Hardest Boss ever (which really has nothing to do with AI, but that's the way the thread is going) has to be on the final level of DOOM. I couldn't beat it even in god mode.

It's hard writing good AI that acts like a human player and is limited to querying the game mechanics for the same hints provided to the player interface on enemy locations.

It's cheap and poor programming when all the AI does "bullet.position = player.position", especially in games like Starcraft where they always know exactly where every unit is, regardless of fog of war or otherwise. I've had things follow my cloaked units until they were able to bring in an observer and "legally" be able to kill them.

AI should not have direct access to player structures and should be forced to query the game state via the same mechanics as the player.

He's easy if you're used to playing instagib rail Q3DM17 online 🙂

I was able to beat 1 and 2 numerous times on emperor difficulty. That may sound like bragging, but I would be ashamed to tell you how many hours I spent on those stupid games throughout my pre-teen to teenage years... I could probably be a millionaire if I'd have invested that time learning something else.

i know people that can play it on Sid mode

Civ is a prime example of cheating & lack of real AI. You can choose the bonuses the computer gets ahead of time. Anything past regent just isn't fair.

I was never good enough at the first two, but the technique to beat Civ3c on Sid comes down to getting a good-sized island to yourself, getting civs to help you gang up all on one target, running in to take a couple cities, holding out for concessions. & repeating. Unless you're an era & a half behind, the AI just isn't smart enough to successfully invade over water. I've read of people winning on Pangaea, but I've never lasted very long.

Or before Ghost Recon.... Rogue Spear...

Being able to 1 shot you in the face with a hand gun from 200 yards away the instant you make a noise, or the guy in the tower in the rail road station I nick named "one way glass guy", where you can't shoot him, but he can shoot you... or again being able to see you and hit you from 200 yards away with a hand gun while you are hiding in the bushes... lame-o
