Morrowind hands down. It's nothing like diablo2, but the game is absolutely mindblowing.
Just as vee said, you're part of a virtual world in morrowind.
Morrowind has it's own history, races, law, culture, religion, everything!
I can't see how there is a morrowind demo, that would show almost nothing about how the game is like.
But defintely try morrowind, it's a unique gaming experience!

be careful, Morrowind will spoil you for other rpgs. After playing it, I am fiding other rpgs pretty boring and simple.

Vee: If BG2 was played like Diablo2 then it would have been godlike for my tastes. I played BG2 from start to end admittedly abusing a walkthrough and character editor to get me past some things which I couldnt beat. I found the BG2 combat system awkward to get used to and the battles seemed stilited. The storyline was very immersive unlike Diablo2 (apart from D2's FMV). Id recommend BG2 to any RPG fan but it didnt truely suit me.

Morrowind I wanted for months and ended up being disappointed. It probably was a great game but I advanced so slowly. It took me hours to get from A to B and it felt very empty, Id liken it to being in an MMORPG by yourself. I felt alone and isolated. I couldnt break the monotony of this and I gave up on it.

Very informative and in-depth post.

holy crap, all the way through. Its driving me insane how long it takes to play it. Me and a buddy are playing it and we're still only level 20 somethings.

Well, it's this 'simulation' concept that may capture your gaming taste forever :)
...And the fantastic 3D freedom.

I can understand another poster though, it's not a game for anyone that just want to get from A to B or 'achieve' the games rewards or beat it to the 'end'.
It's for relaxing in, and enjoying the journey, rather than consider "what do I do next in order to be as powerful as possible and beat the missions as fast as possible". I've still not 'finished' Morrowind. I've done the main thread, but have the expansions and tons of subquests left.
I get quite childish and really use my imagination whenever I 'return' to Morrowind. For me It's a different world to live in, Like Everquest perhaps, but non-MP, non-OL.
But you need imagination to put life into it, I think. NPCs and Interactions with NPC are pretty crude for instance. It's a flawed game, but it definitely works for me. And I would surely want more games of this kind.

What I fear, is the predominating vision of game developers that games should be easy to get into, and that the player needs to be spoonfed a game thread, and that anything that "isn't needed for the story and gameplay" is a bothersome nuisance that players don't wan't. BioWare ruined their BG successor, NeverWinterNights IMO, (I'm sure it works well as a Dungeon Mastered PnP style D&D game application though) and seem to aspire to become a producer of FF type of console games these days.
I've talked to Bioware people on these issues and their minds are quite set in stone about what they think gamers want. Maybe they are right :( - sigh. Final Fantasy and Quake forever.
OTOH, there has to be a reason why Sims is so popular.

Bethesda also sold out, ruining MW-style Pirate game 'Sea Dogs II' into suckey 'Pirates of the Caribbean' for the sake of a Disney license. Just let's hope they don't get any foolish notions with Elderscrolls IV.

I think I'm going to pick up a copy of Sacred. I just finished the demo (this time playing as the Gladiator), and it was a blast. I found several humorous bugs (such as my Gladiator standing up on the back of his horse as he rides around), which a previous poster mentioned. But the quests, the battles and the loot available were really neat. I liked the "magical hidden items" or whatever they were called. Looking for that "buried treasure" of sorts added an extra, on-going quest to the game. :D

Sacred was a decent game,I played as a wood elf and found the game pretty easy to beat,as to Diablo 2, have you tried the expanison pack called "Lord of destruction".

Divine Divinity is awesome which is one of my favourite games for "hack and slash" ,if you like Morrowind type games then Gothic and Gothic 2 are great.

Dungeon Seige and Neverwinter Nights are worth buying.

I`ve also played Arx Fatalis(good),The temple of elemental evil(turn based game that`s ok but not great),Lionheart(slow start but gets better the longer you play it ,I enjoyed the game especially about halfway through ).

Beyond Divinity(was fair, I was disappointed with this one) ,the thing with RPG type games is the list is huge and gameplay can be quite different.

Yeah, I bought the Diablo II battle pack a while back. Lord of Destruction was really cool - the ice cave levels were some of my favorites, although the final boss (I think it was Baal) was a tad easier than I had expected him to be. Great expansion though!

Kinda, but not really. In D2 monsters will only reappear in an area if you start a new game (in multiplayer) or save/load in single player.

In sacred it's fvcking annoying. there is this ENDLESS respawn going on. I mean once you hit level 20 you would sometimes just like to walk back through a level 1-5 area and not be bothered.

Wow, that does sound rather annoying. I've been doing a lot of reading on the subject, and I think I've changed my mind (at least for the immediate future). I'm going to hold off on getting Sacred, and instead pick up a copy of Morrowind. I've read far more positive reviews of that game than I have of Sacred, although I really liked the Sacred demo.

I hope to pick the game up tomorrow afternoon. Wish me luck in entering this new gaming world! :)

Gothic 2 is what Morrowind could have been. You have more story and a more alive world to interact with. I'd suggest Gothic 2 way before I would suggest Morrowind. Also, the camera is pretty weird, so when you start playing it you may get annoyed, but stick with it for more than 15 minutes and you will be set.

Baldur's Gate is an insanely awesome game, as it BG2 / Planescape / NWN. If you have never played any of these, I suggest you do. The NWN platinum pack (game + 2 expansions) just came out and would be a good way to get into NWN.

Sacred is a decent game. The first hour or 2 you will try out all the classes and see all kinds of cool skills they get. But once you pick a class and get beyond hour 5 it all turns into repetition. Every area is the same crap. The monsters respawn so fast that you end up just running past them after awhilee. I think I got to the 3rd town before I was so ungodly bored with the game that I stopped playing. It had a lot of potential and props to you if you can manage to complete it.

I think it was cool that someone recommended WC3 RPGs, they are short but tons of fun.

Well, I stood in Best Buy looking at the various games on the shelf for at least 20 minutes, and I finally settled on the Morrowind Game of the Year edition. Also on the shelf was a Baldur's Gate II pack (two games I think), but I want to try out the Baldur's Gate demos (if there are any) before I pick that up. I had read positive things about Morrowind on the web, so I went with what I knew.

Only problem is that I can't install it until I get home tonight from school (which will be fairly late). :( Oh well - at least I don't have any classes tomorrow! :D

Man, I *know* you guys will probably laugh fits at me when you see this game but I'm really going to recommend it anyway. It was one of the great-grandaddies of RPGs

Angband.

Google for it. There is like some huge underground following of this game. I'm kinda particular to the Angband-tk mod. It's pretty user friendly for a game that had it's roots in Moria long before you could fit such a thing in a PCs memory.

Again, most of you will clown me when you first figure out what it's about. Someone is gonna take a bit of time an play it (say up to at least level 15). When you do you'll come back and tell everyone - yeah I see what Smilin's saying. That game is the shiz!

Unless you're prone to crack addiction it will take you 6 months to finish.
