My daughter and my oldest grandson loved anime. He still watches it. Every one I've seen has been angst-filled and adolescent - but maybe that's just what was on at the time. (Cowboy Bebop, Inyuasha, Ghost in the Shell come to mind.) (Also a Hannah-Barbara level of movement in the animation.) I have a very low tolerance for angst.

But it was made for something else. A group called The Fine Young Capitalists was running a crowdfunding project to help get women into game development and one of the pledge tiers allowed the pledger to create a character that'd be used in the game. So 4chan's /v/ basically ran a proxy pledge and got to win the tier.

Most amusingly (although hardly surprisingly) in a debate primarily about ethics in journalism, the mainstream media have with the notable exception of Reason done an extremely poor job of reportage, primarily parroting what the accused gaming journalists tell them. Then they are very confused when their "reportage" is dismissed by the majority. Mainstream journalists tend to live in a bubble every bit as much as do gaming journalists.

edit: One more thing: Why should you care? You should care because gaming journalism has ceased to be legitimately and honestly about gaming journalism and has morphed into a progressive social justice warrior league whose members cover their friends and lovers without disclosing that very critical information. It's a self-interest business with a very thin veneer of political correctness. Thus we have a never-ending stream of shit indie games treated like the second coming and shit AAA games rated extremely highly even with game-breaking bugs because those are the journalists' friends and, um, professional friends with benefits. And interspersed with that we have attacks on gamers because our gaming media has become populated with people who hate their audience.

If these journalists are not held to account, then gaming journalism will naturally progress as has the SciFi and fantasy literature journalism, where awards and publicity are meted out within an insular group according to perceived social justice. I don't think anyone other than the SJWs wants to see that.
