If by action you mean FPS or TPS (like Max Payne/Tomb Raider/Indiana Jones), I'd give the edge to XBox over GameCube, although you will miss out on the brilliance of Metroid Prime and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

I think XBox and GameCube are roughly equivalent in the adventure space. GameCube tends to have more "platformer" entries in this genre, although it does have Eternal Darkness, which makes up for a lot.

If RPG is one of your big genres, you might actually want to consider a PS2. There are probably more RPG titles alone (although to be fair, a lot of them are actually PSX games that the PS2 picks up through backwards compatibility) than all games on either XBox or GameCube. Not that quantity is the same as quality, because clearly there's a lot of junk in the PS2 library, but be aware that the RPG content on the other platforms isn't all there yet, and may take a while to materialize.

Thanks. I wouldn't want to play FPS on a console, so I guess I'd be in the TPS camp. I hate platform games, and when I said RPG I had PCRPG type games in mind although I realize it's a different thing on consoles. I haven't played a console style RPG in a long time but I always did like them.

Metroid Prime has re-defined how FPS's control on a console.
Im certain you will see many fps console games copy it in the near future.

I'm on the same fence. The last year there really hasn't been that much to keep me gaming on the PC. Yeah, there have been a few stints here and there, but I really miss emmersive RPGs like Final Fantasy, Crono Trigger, or Skies of Arcadia.

I wanna be able to pick up a game and mindlessly game for a few hours or minutes. Hard to do that with the computer. And sports games are a console activity. Sure, PCs can make them pretty, but its all to turn your $1000-$2000 peice of hardware into a better version of a $200 console.

I'm tired of waiting months for a possible port to the PC *cough*GTA3*cough* only to get a buggy peice of crap that shouldn't have been released in the first place. Tired of getting treated like second class citizen waiting by the Playstation/Xbox table for crumbs to fall my way.

Yeah, I know that PCs give us Multi-Player. Sure I know that they have ability to do mods and easier saves. But those lines are being blurred with broadband adapters on the PS2 and Xbox.

My problem is the same problem I had with the Dreamcast. I buy one, and it goes obsolete in under 6 months to a year. Now I am hearing about the PS3. Heck, even rumors that it might be out by christmas. I wanna PS2...but not if it means a PS3 is around the corner.

My PC will never be replaced with FPS or RTS games. But I need more...No more Waiting! No more being forced to blow $200 on upgrades to play a friggin game! Gimme my fill now! Get out of my way, I got some Magiteks to destroy!!

theres no way in hell ps3 would come out this year, unless it was a rebadged ps2 with hard drive and network connector already built in.

i can't find any information about this but if you were thinking of getting a GC, now is the time.

I haven't owned a console since the SNES, but with PC games in the toilet I've been considering a GC. I'd love for soemone to talk me out of it though.

Get one.

Get one. Get Zelda, Metroid, Mario, and Eternal Darkness to start 🙂

If you manage to get a Gamecube during a sale when it cost less than a $100 then I think it's something anyone with any interest in video games ought to have. There are many, many great games you can't play without one and many of the games can be bought for low prices too.

Great exclusive games for the Gamecube..

Legend of Zelda:Wind Waker
Metroid Prime
Animal Crossing
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Monkeyball
Super Monkeyball 2
Super Smash Brothers Melee
Eternal Darkness-adult
Resident Evil-adult
Pikmin- most overlooked great game
Summoner
Star Wars-Rogue Leader
..and others too.

coming soon..

Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life
Sonic Adventure DX
Super Mario Kart
Animal Crossing 2
Pikmin 2
..and more.

Great cross-platform games for Gamecube..

Lord of the Rings-Two Towers
Madden 2003
NCAA Football 2003
Nascar Racing 2003
Nascar-Dirt to Daytona
SSX Tricky
Baldur's Gate-Dark Alliance
Tiger Woods 2003
Def Jam Vendetta brand new(best on Gamecube according to Gamespot)
Burnout 2 brand new(not available on xBox for awhile yet)
Splinter Cell brand new(better in some ways than xBox version according to Gamespot)
..and many others.

btw, I'm not advocating buying a Gamecube instead of an xBox or a PS2, I think those discussions are pointless. I'm advocating getting a Gamecube because it's a great bargain in it's own right. I added the comments to a couple of games above not to continue the console war, but to point out that the Gamecube has good 3rd party support and the power to compete with the other consoles in terms of gaming power, issues which are frequently used by people who for some reason mis-represent the Gamecube's place in the market.

zelda ww alone is a good reason to get a gamecube...

now they are doing the one game free offer, just sell the game on egay or something

I bought a Gamecube last December. The only time I felt a twinge of regret or uncertainty over the purchase was right after paying for it. I kept thinking "man, I should have bought an X-Box." But then I got home and hooked it up and all doubts flew out the window. Playing games like Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness, and now Zelda has firmly cemented the idea that the Gamecube is the console to have.

The only minus about the Gamecube is the shape, but I don't mind it too much. Right now I have it set up on a shelf on my entertainment center with my NES. Next time I go home, I'm going to dig through the attic for my SNES. 😀

Sales are up but still dissapointing

Nintendo revises its earnings estimate for the year ended March 31 after disappointing sales of its GameCube console.

Nintendo has today announced that it has slashed its earnings estimate for the year ended March 31, blaming disappointing sales of its GameCube console. Nintendo's net profit estimate of 80 billion yen has been cut to 66 billion yen ($550 million), while its sales forecast has fallen from 600 billion yen to 500 billion yen. To put these figures into perspective, Nintendo achieved a group net profit of 106.44 billion yen on sales of 554.89 billion yen in 2001.

Nintendo's initial estimates for the year ended March 31 included an ambitious target of some 10 million GameCube console sales--a target far in excess of the 5.6 million consoles actually sold. "GameCube sales were bad worldwide,'' said chief financial officer Yoshihiro Mori at a news conference in Osaka.

Thats good to know, at least they are on the come up... for awhile hopefully.

I like PS2 better then GC, but I want Nintendo to be around and hopefully their next system will deviate from their kiddie trend over the last few years.

Just in the UK, the U.S. is an entirely different story

no, in the US aswell
it has outsold all 3 systems for the first time since launch.
it is because of the release of zelda WW

I sold my PS2 for a gamecube, I don't regret it...got a mem card, zelda WW and the cube for $170 w/ tax...great deal.

I got a Gamecube recently too.....no regret's whatsoever!!! 😀

But also I just read this Conflicting news... 🙁

Nintendo on Monday lowered its earnings estimate for the year ended March 31 - blaming weaker-than-expected sales of their GameCube console. The company now expects 66 billion yen (550 million dollars) in group net profit - down from 80 billion yen. It also slashed its sales forecast to 500 billion yen from 600 billion yen. Nintendo hoped to sell 10 million consoles through March 2003 - sharply up from 3.8 million units in the previous year. The company initially expected cuts in the suggested retail price in Japan and the U.S. last year as well as the European launch last May to boost shipments.

well .. i was planning on getting a gamecube but i'm rethinking it. It'd be a greaet console to play some party games with my friends but that would be about it. Other than Zelda and Metroid Prime.

Uhhh...am I missing something?
GAMECUBE OUTSELLS PS2 IN UK!
Where does the article mention the U.S., or Asia for that matter?

Pikmin- most overlooked great game

Oh definitely. A lot of people complain about the kiddie games, but some of those are loads of fun. Just because there's no gore and excessive blood, people automatically label it "kiddie." As for Pikmin specifically, it was damn fun. I suggested my uncle buy Pikmin for his 3 year old daughter for Christmas last year...because I've seen some good reviews for it. But she was definitely too young because beating requires good strategy. It suited my 40 year old engineer uncle - he stayed up nights playing it while coming to work all tired and sleepy...lol. He even dreamt he was being attacked by Pikmins because he played it so much.

And I started playing it last week - 5 more days and 1 more part to go 🙂. One gripe though: the game is a bit too short. So anyone with a GC should either buy or rent (it will only provide about 6 hours of gameplay), but you'll enjoy it unless you have a short attention span and crappy logic.

Xbox + Live = no contest

And no...the GameCube has NOT shed the "kiddie" image that started with the N64.
And yes, like the GC...N64 had non-kiddie games too, like GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Resident Evil 2, and others.

The fact of the matter is that Nintendo is responsible for creating and fostering that image, which is reflected in everything from hardware design decisions, to bundling and marketing campaigns, to game designs.

Personally, I would rather have my eyes gouged out with red-hot pokers than try to use the GC controller for any significant period of time.

BTW: I *would* have picked up an Indigo GC for $67 a couple of weeks ago, if there was an FAO Schwartz B&M anywhere near me. But I wouldn't pay any more than that for it, which is only $17 more than what the DC went for new after Sega discontinued it.

BTW2: Had to comment on this item:
Splinter Cell brand new(better in some ways than xBox version according to Gamespot)
Splinter Cell Xbox Gamespot score = 8.6 (still a sickening travesty of a score, tho)
Splinter Cell GC = 8.4

Am I missing something here? If it's better on GC, why didn't it score higher?

Oh, it must have been because of this
Splinter Cell pushed the envelope in terms of the Xbox's graphical capabilities, but some compromises had to be made with the GameCube version's visuals. The environments are considerably less detailed, and the shadow and lighting effects don't look quite as good, though they're still very good. The game's frame rate can vary wildly and slows way down in areas that are particularly heavy on lighting effects.
Hmmmm...

ill buy a gamecube when nintendo invents a machine that makes me 15 years younger so i can enjoy the cartoon style graphics.

Ive played both Metroid Prime and Zelda: WW. I was not impressed at all, and i was considering buying a gamecube to play ZWW. Mario Sunshine and Luigis Mansion... im not even gonna go there.

I own an Xbox and it has some great titles, Ghost Recon, Unreal Championship, Halo, DOA: XBV, Outlaw Golf, Mechassault, Splinter Cell. And im looking forward to some great XBLive titles, Halo2 alone will be worth getting an Xbox ill bet, they are hinting at very large online games with many players. They arent specifying the player max, but its lookin good 🙂

And if you know anyone else with an Xbox, System Link rocks! 8 players at once in halo is a blast 🙂
