And no...the GameCube has NOT shed the "kiddie" image that started with the N64.
And yes, like the GC...N64 had non-kiddie games too, like GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Resident Evil 2, and others.

The fact of the matter is that Nintendo is responsible for creating and fostering that image, which is reflected in everything from hardware design decisions, to bundling and marketing campaigns, to game designs.

Personally, I would rather have my eyes gouged out with red-hot pokers than try to use the GC controller for any significant period of time.

BTW: I *would* have picked up an Indigo GC for $67 a couple of weeks ago, if there was an FAO Schwartz B&M anywhere near me. But I wouldn't pay any more than that for it, which is only $17 more than what the DC went for new after Sega discontinued it.

BTW2: Had to comment on this item:
Splinter Cell brand new(better in some ways than xBox version according to Gamespot)
Splinter Cell Xbox Gamespot score = 8.6 (still a sickening travesty of a score, tho)
Splinter Cell GC = 8.4

Am I missing something here? If it's better on GC, why didn't it score higher?

Oh, it must have been because of this
Splinter Cell pushed the envelope in terms of the Xbox's graphical capabilities, but some compromises had to be made with the GameCube version's visuals. The environments are considerably less detailed, and the shadow and lighting effects don't look quite as good, though they're still very good. The game's frame rate can vary wildly and slows way down in areas that are particularly heavy on lighting effects.
Hmmmm...

Eh. I'm sure SC on the PC blows them both away. If a game is available on the PC that's where I'm going to play it. I'm looking into consoles for games that aren't on the PC.

I own a GC and think it's great. I've been getting all my games for under $20 which is the biggest plus for me. If I had to rank the 3 systems:

Price:
1) GC 2) tied - PS2 and XBox
- GC $50 less

Design:
1) PS2 2) GC 3) XBox
- PS2 has the best controller by far. I would give the console design edge to the Gamecube for it's small footprint, but the controller is more important

Graphics/sound:
1) XBox 2) GC 3) PS2
XBox has noticeably better graphics on high-resolution and DD5.1 support. GC not far behind though

Selection of games
1) PS2 2) tied - XBox and GC
- PS2 by far. Even though XBox has more games than the GC, GC has better exclusives

Price of games/accessories
1) tied - PS2 and GC 3) XBox

They also are the ONLY good games on GC 😛

Get a PS2, more games, BETTER games

XBOX, not many GOOD games, but a sweet moddable box (PC in a box)! 😀

er... no

i don't see the point of buying an xbox if you own a pc, they are pretty damn similar.

i like the gamecube for it's exclusives, games you just can't get elsewhere.

can you think of a good game similar to zelda on xbox?

As I said in my post my comment was meant to refute criticism directed at the Gamecube for being "kiddie" or less capable than the xBox or PS2. Obviously if it's possible to play Splinter Cell on the Gamecube it isn't "kiddie" is it ? btw, what is the point of calling something kiddie ? We are talking about playing games here.

As to my comment here is a direct quote from Gamespot's review of Splinter Cell for the Gamecube..

"One of the most popular, most successful, and best looking games for Microsoft's Xbox is now on the GameCube, and in some respects it's better than the original."

Which is all that I said.

I also think it's great that people who want the xBox can buy them. It's a great system. I just wish that xBox advocates didn't feel so threatened by the Gamecube that they feel they have to attack it.

IGN did a head to head comparing all versions of the game and they picked the xbox version as the best.

Which is not surprising as the GC and PS2 versions are ports.

I agree. Besides, I don't want to let Microsoft in my living room if I can help it. 😉

For me its:

Price:
For me since I go for features, the Xbox is first as far as price is concerned. Xbox gives me so many options for a nice home theater setup and only costs $50 more than the Gamecube and the same price as PS2. Second is a tie between GC and PS2 because the PS2 comes with a DVD player for only $50 more but I can get a stand alone for about $50 so it isn't much of a value.

Design:
This one easily goes to the Xbox. It looks by far the best with my home theater setup. Second is the PS2. Third is the Gamecube. While the Gamecube is kind of cute and all, it really doesn't compliment other components in a home theater system very well.

Sound:
Xbox easily in first followed by PS2 (TOS-Link cable) and then Gamecube

Selection of games;
PS2 easily in first followed by Xbox and then Gamecube (Gamecube really lacks in driving games and sports games)

Price of games and accessories:
Tied PS2 and GC followed by Xbox

I don't see what everyone's problem with the GameCube's design. Its by far the smallest console, therefore the most portable console. The XBox could have been *far* smaller if they actually put effort into its design...my Shuttle SV24 is just a bit bigger then the GC....and we all know that the XBox is a modified PC...they could have done better. The PS2 is a better design for home theaters; its slim at least. But really, MS could have done better with XBox's design. IMO the GC's design is near perfect. Its super small and portable. What's wrong with that?

serious xbox fanboy i'm quoting. i like the gamecube controller. Anyway, all the systems have good games, to be a fanboy just limits what you play, all arguments are pretty stupid. Play the system that has the games and features you like, what is to argue about. people love to say how "their system is better", reminds me of 6th grade kids arguing about snes and genesis, guess it never ends.

zelda? mario? can't nintendo come up with something new 😉

as for microsoft in your living room, sonyis a big bad mega corporation too😛 hell they act like the riaa u guys hate most of the time, bastards.

"IGN did a head to head comparing all versions of the game and they picked the xbox version as the best. "

Do you have a link to this comparison ? I just finished reading IGN's review of the Gamecube version of Splinter Cell and they thought it was great. For those of us who have a Gamecube and a Gameboy Advance they said-

"In fact, thanks to the new gameplay polishing and Game Boy Advance connectivity enhancements, it might even be just a tiny bit more fun.." compared to the old xBox version.
