Did you just compare an actual to a theoretical? Tisk....

The only place I can get actual data from for the PS3 is folding@home which puts a PS3 28.88 GFLOPS - 60.93 GFLOPS x86 equivalent.

The Sanford FLOP figures are from the software cores, which are more complicated than a simple "how many FLOPS" app., so they are probably an underestimation.

This year's birthday present to my mom was a new computer. It's a pretty damn nice computer, absolutely no old parts, total was $600 CDN. Throw in a $200 video card and it will destroy any game you throw at it.

(Athlon X4, 4gb DDR3, 500gb Caviar Black HDD, other random stuff)

Not only that but he compared double precision to single precision.

http://www.blachford.info/computer/Cell/Cell1_v2.html

Oh snap! Less than one third the speed of an i7.

I checked the benchmark, it didn't state that it was double precision...

The original whetstone was single precision so I went with that.

What's with the fat guy in the green Zelda shirt wearing sandals? Did they call him 5 minutes before air time and he was still sleeping on his mom's couch or something?

Damn, I wish we had a console gaming sub-forum...

There is, check to the left. What you probably meant to say is that you wish there was a subforum for posts about what idiots say. Since this is a thread about an idiot - not about a console gaming system.

Way to miss the sarcasm...

In terms of raw FLOPS -

i7 975 @ 4GHz........89.6 GFLOPS (Actual Whetstone)
PS3.......................179.6 GFLOPS (Theoretical max single-precision) (WIN)

In terms of GFX
HD5870..............2.72 TFLOPS (WIN)
RSX (PS3)...........1.80 TFLOPS

RSX (7800gtx derivative) has a higher theoretical tflops than a GTX 280? :hmm:

You sure about those RSX numbers? If I recall the Xbox 360's GPU has ~360GFlops. 1.8TFlops would put the GeForce 7900 derived PS3 GPU well higher than a Radeon 4890, GTX285, etc.

Derek Fisher and Manu Ginobili puts those number to shame.

Sheesh, they are already up to 51 pages of comments. 98% of them are about his PS3/PC comment. That's one way to get hits I suppose.

i actually watched from 57 minutes onwards, and god he doesnt even know what hes talking about. quad dual pentium 3.2/3.6 whatever he was talking about is absolutely BS. and no one said you have to spend $2000 on a computer to get better/faster graphics. hell, any modern gpu today will run circles around the ps3/360/and 2x gamecube = wii.

Yeah? Well Nintendo can display 256 colors AT THE SAME TIME, unlike GAY SEGA that can only do 64!

TAKE IT SONIC.

First google result for "whetstone cpu precision"

http://www.cpu-world.com/info/bench/benchmarks.html
Whetstone benchmark with double precision. This benchmark shows processor's integer and floating point performance in KWIPS units (thousands of whetstone instructions per second). The program was compiled using DJGPP v2.03 development system and GCC/GPP v 3.4.1 with optimization flag "-O2". The benchmark is run 4 times under IBM PC-DOS 7.1, the first result is ignored, the other three results are used to calculate the average KWIPS value.

Other tests verify that i7 and i7-Xeon really do ~80 gflops at double precision:
http://www.brightsideofnews.com/new...ion-part-3-the-first-benchmarks.aspx?pageid=1
The Cinebench seems to do better now, and Linpack simply shines: 95 GFLOPS of actual double precision performance obtained here, beating double precision offered by every GeForce GPU below GTX295, e.g. the dual-GT200b GPU part. Note that Linpack is quite sensitive to the memory latency too. If you ever decide to run DDR3-1333 memory modules with CAS6 latency, you could easily see the system achieving 100 GFLOPS, very near its peak theoretical limit. Of course, this is just a start anyway.

The i7 really is an incredible processor. It came out more than a year ago and AMD still hasn't been able to beat the 920. At my local computer store, it's as expensive today as it was when it just came out.

Who gives a crap about flops and "whetstone cpu precision"? PS3 cannot push out 30fps at the resolution nor quality of a LOWEND computer and a 60$ GPU can. Bottom line! Its not like gamers give a crap about anything else in terms of performance, so none of those other benchmarks matter.
