2K to have a good computer isn't necessarily wrong.... It just depends on the definition of good and what is being included. I spent well over 2K on my computer, but you can be sure as shit it's much faster than a PS3.

The PS3 comment is clearly the most inaccurate one.

I thought everybody knew this was true? When you boil down raw floating point ops, a PS3 is faster than any PC?

It might have been a stretch to think the PS3 was faster than ANY PC when it first came out. Now, 3 years later, it's a joke to think that the PS3 is faster than any PC.

agreed. intel core i7 (or core i9 next year) + radeon 5970 (or whatever next gen nvidia gpu next year) = faster than the ps3 thats for sure.

but i remember reading on anandtech (out of all places) that the ps3 has a gpu equivalent of the 7800GTX, and that the day/week it came out, nvidia launched the 8800GTX, which blew away the ps3.

edit: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2870&p=29 - very first paragraph.

Console fanbois are almost as bad as Apple fanbois. Almost.

Now, if Apple ever gets a console off the ground......*shudder*

A PS3 might be faster than any PC given one particular task or benchmark that it happens to be optimized for. But to measure it as "any game" is a delusion.

The iPhone is largely becoming regarded as a competitor in the handheld console market.

A PS3 might be faster at accepting a PS3 controller as a device by which to control games. Maybe.

In terms of raw FLOPS -

i7 975 @ 4GHz........89.6 GFLOPS (Actual Whetstone) (WIN)
PS3.......................25.6 GFLOPS (Theoretical)

In terms of GFX
HD5870..............2.72 TFLOPS (WIN)
RSX (PS3)...........1.80 TFLOPS <- LIES! more like 360 GFLOPs.

PS3.......................179.6 GFLOPS (Theoretical max single-precision) (WIN)

In terms of GFX
HD5870..............2.72 TFLOPS (WIN)
RSX (PS3)...........1.80 TFLOPS

Did you just compare an actual to a theoretical? Tisk....

Maybe some die hard gambits would think such a thing, but most console players know what they're giving up in terms of potential graphics.

FLOPs aren't everything. 3D applications benefit from specialized architecture that allows graphics cards to push complex shader calculations and the like almost directly through hardware. While progress continues to be made in this area on PCs, consoles naturally stagnate between releases.

This year's birthday present to my mom was a new computer. It's a pretty damn nice computer, absolutely no old parts, total was $600 CDN. Throw in a $200 video card and it will destroy any game you throw at it.

(Athlon X4, 4gb DDR3, 500gb Caviar Black HDD, other random stuff)

Did you just compare an actual to a theoretical? Tisk....
Not only that but he compared double precision to single precision.

http://www.blachford.info/computer/Cell/Cell1_v2.html
The final specifications haven't been given out yet but this is what we know so far:
Capable of running at speeds beyond 4 GHz.
Memory bandwidth: 25.6 GBytes per second.
I/O bandwidth: 76.8 GBytes per second.
256 GFLOPS (Single precision at 4 GHz).
256 GOPS (Integer at 4 GHz).
25 GFLOPS (Double precision at 4 GHz).
235 square mm.
235 million transistors.
Oh snap! Less than one third the speed of an i7.
