Uh... Overthinker is the right name for him. Although, judging from his misplaced "enthusiasm," a better name would be Bad-Priorities-Guy.

I liked it also. I'm not sure he's right, but he makes a good argument for an alternate business model.

The guy had a really good point; One i'd never thought of before.

But he is overthinking it. There are games around for younger players.

Anyway, kids these days are more into gaming than the last gen.

What does he think is going happen? Kids are going to stop gaming and go back to playing with yoyo's?

there are only few kids playing xbox 360 games (although they are obvious cause of their annoying voices).

I work at a summer camp for my summer job, and all the kids either don't play consoles or play the wii (besides like 2 kids). that should
tell you something.
people who play the xbox/ps3 are teenagers/adults (those teenagers were playing things like nintendo/super nintendo at these kids' ages)

this guy speaks the truth

It took some time to some people around to realize that the day the Dreamcast arrived it basically started a trend amongst console makers, turning their hardware into computers with controllers. The "real" consoles are long gone. And about the mascots argument, Sony for some time had one, it was Crash Bandicoot, but today the "mascots" of Microsoft and Sony are pretty much the actual hardware's pixel-pushing powers and features. At least Nintendo managed to keep the roots of what made the golden gaming age what it was back then to this day at some extent.

I remember when it was fun to gather at a friend's house to play some NES, SNES, Genesis and some N64 too, some of them often brought their own consoles and their games so we could all play together and just have fun. Today we connect to the internet and play on-line and very rarely gather together to play console games. When it does happen it's probably for a LAN party more than anything else. The last time I can recall going to someone's house and bring my console and play some games together was with my XBOX (not 360, the original), which I owned for about six or seven months.

But I guess I'm an old gamer at 26 years-old and having my mind blinded by nostalgia, but I miss those days. I had the chance to talk about video games to a colleague at my job not so long ago, I believe he's around 17 or 18 years-old, and I asked him what he liked the most about gaming on consoles, and I remember him telling me that his favorite game was some sports title, I think it was a Madden game, on the PlayStation 2. I asked him if he ever owned an "old" console like an N64, he said no and because the graphics suck by today's standards he won't play N64 or any old games. I told him how hot games like Golden Eye and Ocarina of Time and Perfect Dark were back then, but he said "yeah, for their time".

He's right, but that's just because of graphics. If today games didn't looked like a movie I'm pretty sure that Perfect Dark would smash Crysis for better game-play and replay value.

I remember all that, too....
That's why I'm having more fun with my PS3 than with my old broken 360. 4 player Resistance is more fun than one might think. I guess that's why I don't like most newer consoles because the bring it over to play with friends thing is kind of gone from them; it's all online now. Not that I don't enjoy online, but I enjoy being WITH my friends playing games rather than talking to them on a mic.

Lets consider that MS and Sony have seen the successes of the Wii in the casual gaming market.
MS is trying (even if they are failing) to broaden their appeal to a wider variety of gamers, and markets (i.e. Japan).
Now sure, they may not be there yet, but they already see the value of expanding outside the market of core gamers and into the casual arena like Nintendo have managed with the Wii.

This guy is saying that MS and Sony are focusing only on core gamers and Nintendo will be the only ones to survive when that market dries up, but they (MS and Sony) are already making efforts to enter into that market and avoid the very situation he is claiming they are heading towards.
Hence, he is a moron for saying the console market is going to do exactly what the comic book market did, because they are already trying to avoid that.

Also, consoles aren't all just toys, which is another thing MS and Sony are trying to get out of. They are trying to give people a reason to buy them beyond just playing games, such as the PS3 being a good Bluray player as well. And it seems a reasonable number of people are particularly attracted to the PS3 because of that element, meaning it's a home entertainment device as well as a "toy".
MS and Sony are both trying to push into new markets (casuals and females) rather than sticking with their core markets. Whether they eventually succeed or not is another matter, but they are trying. They are also trying to position their consoles as more than just toys on which to play video games by adding more multimedia features such as the ability to buy/rent movies and watch them on the TV, the ability (in the case of the PS3) to play Bluray films.

This guy seems to think the only purpose of the PS3 and Xbox 360 is to play games, and the only market Sony and MS care about is hardcore gamers. He is wrong.

My kids still enjoy playing the ORIGINAL Super Mario Land for the Gameboy... even as sadistically hard as it is and with the crap graphics :p
I think this generation growing up playing various Flash games will help to de-emphasize graphics again.

Explain how I was owned? He gave the intelligent response I was looking for instead of, "He's a moron." If we have 2 people running for office participating in a debate and one offers a substantial argument, then the other simply says, "That's dumb," would you consider that a good rebuttal? Of course not.

You've been owned.

Did video blogger ever start to think that the popularity of comic books fell due to the popularity of video games? Its just an evolutionary process. Why read about a character when you can actually play the role of the character? Why read a story when you can be a part of the story? Microsoft investing in the video game market is a good sign that it will continue and grow. And it will. We will see ups and downs as the companies learn more about what their customers want, i.e., what they are willing to pay for, and how to implement that with the newest technologies.

What he doesn't understand is the free market economy. Where there is great demand, there will be great supply.

Theres one thing I don't understand in his argument. For some reason he seems to forget that kids grow up. Its like he thinks that once all the 18-25yr old people get older there wont be anymore people 18-25.

Also from what I've seen younger kids like 10 yrs old love violent and mature video games. Sometimes just for the fact that they are violent and mature.

We like to call his style of persuasion oratory. I'd say a rant should be 1min or less.

Oh, and my PS3 is certainly not a only toy and I feel no shame reading or playing anything I please. I'm an adult and I couldn't care less what anyone thinks of the entertainment I choose to consume.

I do somewhat agree that the industry needs to make more kid games that are worth playing though.

I quit buying comic books because they went from costing a quarter when I was little to two bucks when I was a teenager.

Ok, I just couldn't do it.. I couldn't finish watching it. What exactly is this guy's point? That gaming will die because games aren't geared toward kids as much anymore? That's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. It's a fact that the average age of gamers is increasing significantly. This guy makes it seem like we won't play video games at 40? Why not? I don't see that logic. This guy acts as though video games cannot be played by adults. Adults didn't play video games in the past because they didn't grow up with them, it's simple. We did, we won't stop playing them if we enjoy them. Personally, I work/take classes and it takes up 60-80 hours a week for me, but I haven't given up gaming because I have no time. I watch less than an hour of TV a day - I've traded TV watching (what A LOT of pre-gaming era adults do when they come home from work) for gaming. I just don't see why it's impossible to see a shift for our generation as we age as well.
