Gallup: half of conservatives upbeat on Obama Presidency

Lots of interesting numbers here.

45% of conservatives think Obama will be a good president. (88% of libs, no surprise)

75% of 18-29 year olds think Obama will be a good president. 60% of 30 and overs agree.

With all this good feeling comes a lot of expectations, many of which cannot be met, so what I expect to hear from the admin in the near term is a lot of expectation management peppered with optimism.

But for now, dude has a lot of political capital.

Most presidents do when they come in, look at Bush's early approval ratings. And as a whole conservatives are much more optimistic with their outlook on life.

Bush's approval ratings went into the stratosphere only after 9/11. Before then he tried to reach across the aisle after the Florida debacle. But he was still lazy considering how many vacations he went on before 9/11.

Not surprising. Most people regardless of political affiliation can spot a "doer". Obama ran a masterful campaign and clearly has the intellect and understanding it takes. The question is how much power he has to really dig us out of what is most definitely the deepest hole we've been in since the GD.

he shouldnt of invaded iraq... if they just got the "mission accomplished" in afghanistan his ratings would probably still be through the roof

I am a conservative, and a Christian, and I know this will shock many, but I am pretty optimistic about our president-elect. Though I would not stand on the same side with him on some social issues, I do believe he will bring about some needed change for our country and hopefully bring some dignity and respect back to our country and the office he will hold.

The best thing Mr Obama can do is to communicate with the country about expectations, set goals, and explain plans on how to get there. He needs to publish upfront his list of priorties, what it would take and the level of difficulty to achieve each goal.

He could do quarterly or monthly fireside talks, like FDR, and discuss the status and next steps for each goal.

I wouldn't say so much capital as a honeymoon or grace period.

As for this conservative, while no Obama supporter.
I hope he has a successful presidency for the sake of the country not for the sake of an ideology.
And like many Conservatives as opposed to an optomistic sense, have a lets watch and see what develops sense about it.

It will instantly legitimize his early Presidency and from there he can really get things going. Running for a second term will be a cake walk after that. Because everything else he has to fix is simply going to take more time to produce results than most average Americans will probably tolerate.
