Galaxy Nexus wifi speed slow?

I've narrowed down my wifi issue down to a device-specific problem. My wifi on my laptop with 25/25 FIOS service is going near 20Mbps down. But the ipad and this Nexus (4.1.1) are stupid slow... like 400KBps even when I'm sitting right next to the FIOS wifi router. But the catch is the upload speed is 23MBps! So now that I know it's not the router, why is the Nexus spec'd at 802.11a/b/g/n failing me so badly? It affects me because streaming Netflix and other things is either buffering or streaming at low quality.

VZ Wireless support says there's not much in terms of changing settings on the phone to make it work better. What has been your fastest speed on this thing? I've tried using different channels too and scanners show no other devices on the channels I've tried (including 1, 6, 11).

UPDATE to the above...

I tried it on another wifi router at my parents' house (not FIOS, but Optimum on their own DLINK wifi router) and the GNEX is going fast. I just don't understand.

Why does this point to a router issue when another device (the WIN7 KVM) runs full speed on it? There's not device-specific settings on the router.

my nexus is the same, although not as bad. you're severely limited by the write speed of your internal memory, thats why your upload is flying. do it right after reboot, it should be spades better.

just to update, wifi manager on the phone shows:

level: -39 dBm Channel 1
Speed: 65 Mbps
Security: WPA-PSK-CCMP WPA2-PSK... (it's on WPA2)

Another question - are other phones like Razr Maxx doing better in the wifi dept?

I max out at basically 30x30 on my galaxy nexus which is where I would expect to be with single spatial stream WiFi. You should not see issues streaming netflix. Have you tried speed test?

I expect to see substantially better on the nexus 4.

yes the speedtest.net android app is where I'm getting the results from and even after a fresh boot just now it's still doing under 400KBps. I can't seem to get to the FIOS speed optimizer website with Chrome or the default browser on the phone (not supported).

How likely is it that I have a defective device after 10 months?

I also notice I'm on 4.1.1 and not the latest 4.1.2. Not sure how to get the latest since previously it grabbed it automatically.

I'm not sure 4.1.2 is available for non gsm nexus devices, I have a coworker on sprint and he's still on 4.1.1. All of my friends with gsm are on 4.2 now.

If you are only getting 400k in speedtest.net on fast WiFi something is very wrong. I assume you have checked that other devices get acceptable speeds?

If you are on LTE you should see far better than that even on cellular so there is no memory or cpu speed theory that explains it.

Try other devices, try different WiFi, but something is wrong and that is not normal.

I'm on 4.1.1 on my GNEX. No problem with WIFI 15-18mb down. 18-20mb up. This is about 15 feet away from the router.

Using chrome, and this site for testing.
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Maybe download WIFI analyzer and see if there are other wifi devices using or crossing channels.

For whatever reason, you are likely downloading at the lesser 802.11 a or b link layers...

Try disabling these on the router, and I would bet that your speeds will improve when you reconnect.

good thought but no dice... when router is set to only support N it is still going the same slow speed (< 400 KBps), even after a phone reboot.

Wifi Analyzer shows no other access points or anything else... and of course a strong green signal.

A Linux laptop on wifi is also slow, but the WIN7 KVM loaded on there is 20Mbps. The ipad is also slow. This is why I mentioned it's device-specific (as opposed to a router problem - MAC Authentication is disabled and they're all pointing to the same SSID which is broadcast). At least 1 other wifi device is going at the normal fast speed. So I'm trying to troubleshoot one device at a time. The ipad I don't know what I'm going to do.

Sounds like a router issue...How old is your FiOS router?
Mine is 4.5 years old(Actiontec M1424WR Rev.D) and hits the same 12Mbps wall during wireless speedtests on both the Galaxy S II and Nexus 7 even though my connection is 25/25 on my wired desktop.

You can call Verizon and complain to request a new router. I just never bothered to change mine because I'm too lazy.

My wall seems to be about 3-4 Mbps though.

I thought it was because of the hurricane that power spiked it and so they sent me a new router, but this issue is happening across BOTH routers new and old (rev. F and rev. I).

What's more, I just brought over the Netgear wifi router I tested on my GNEX as fast at my parent's house yesterday and here I hooked it up as an AP with only its wifi running (FIOS wifi off). Same SLOW (~400KBps) result.

By doing it this way I've taken the FIOS router's wifi completely out of the equation since it's on the netgear wifi only, using 25/25 FIOS. I think the only other explanation is interference at my location, but then how does that explain my WIN7 KVM on my linux laptop running fast wifi on the same old (and new) router???
